PRESIDENT'SMESSAGEGreetings, Shepard Community!

Well, I went away for a holiday and came back in need of a rest?? Italy was great but too much "go, go, go" all the time. It was great to get home again.

I am pleased to report the hall now has air conditioning installed on both fl oors. Unfortunately, it has been cool enough to put the furnaces on instead over the past few days but I am glad we got some moisture – fi nally! Also, f or anyone that may benefi t from this particular hall news, impaired mobility access has been greatly improved thanks to some newly installed ramps at the doors.

A couple weeks ago, there was a very successful “Ron-ald McDonald House” fundraiser held at the hall. I don't

know their fi nal tally yet but I hope they raised a lot for this worthy cause. There was very positive feedback about our hall from a number of attendees.

HELP HELP - We need about 10 volunteers to help out at our COMMUNITY CLEAN UP DAY, Sunday, June 19. The latest couture in “fashionable safety vests and work gloves” will be provided. Watch for signage about the City Recycle Trucks onsite at the hall for that day.

We also need VOLUNTEERS for our CASINO fundraiser being held Sept. 5 and 6, 2016. We need 18 volunteers per shift. Please call or email so we can add you to the preferred shift. Remember this is a HUGE fundraiser for the community and all training will be provided (easy stuff ) AND it’s a fun day or night out and just down the road at the Deerfoot Inn!

Our last potluck did provide us a tasty Jiggs Dinner along with pickled herring and other delights like the bacon-wrapped stuff ed jalepeno peppers and many other homemade goodies from assorted local kitchens. It was great to have Stephen and Eileen join in the fun. Mike and Natalie were the hosts and brought along some ‘Newfoundland” party game favorites including "washers" and “Pass the Ace”. Good times & full bellies were had by all!

At our last meeting in May, we have begun to get our Policies and Procedures more formalized and our fi rst item was voted on. It is the “Code of Conduct” docu-ment. If you would like a copy, please drop me a line or call the hall and I can send you one.

It was also decided to proceed with a Halloween Party this year and we hope to have another "Spooktacular" time. It sounds funny to be talking Halloween so early but these things need planning and this will give you LOTS of time to start working on a cool costume! Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 29. All ages wel-come!

So if you have any news you want to share, please drop me an email at [email protected]. Re-member, a community is only as strong as its member-ship and we need more members so come and join us at our next meeting June 15 at 7 pm at the hall.

Your President – Sandra Weir

Here are fi ve facts you may not know about doggy doo-doo:1. It’s classifi ed as a hazardous pollutant. It’s in the same

category as toxic chemicals!2. It’s crawling with E. coli and often contains round-

worm larvae which, if ingested by humans  or dogs, can lead to brain, eye and other organ damage.

3. It’s not a good fertilizer. Its high nutrient content is toxic to lawns and will create “hot spots” causing the grass to burn and discolour.

4. It doesn’t absorb into the soil, so the risk of spreading its harmful eff ects can linger for years!

5. It attracts mice, coyotes and other wildlife that con-sider it a delicious snack.

Keeping our city pet-waste free is easy, if we all do our part. Always carry pet waste bags with you when you walk your dog, and pick up and properly dispose of your pet’s waste as soon as possible.

To learn more about the importance of picking up after your pet, join us at a P.U.P.P.Y. (Pick Up Pooch’s Poo Your-self ) event near you. Visit calgary.ca/puppy for details.

The scoop on dog poopWith 150 public off -leash areas and over 100,000 dogs in our city, it’s clear Calgarians love their canine com-panions. What isn’t to love is the stinky situation left behind when owners don’t pick up after their pets.

Cleaning up your dog’s waste helps keep our yards, parks and off -leash areas safe and healthy, and is part of being a responsible pet owner.

COUNCILLOR, WARD 12 SHANE KEATINGPhone: 403-268-1698 • Email: [email protected]: @CouncillorKeats Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/CouncillorKeatingWeb: http://shanekeating.blogspot.com/

An early spring will hopefully translate into a won-derful summer for Calgarians. Despite the economic challenges we are currently facing, Ward 12 remains a very busy place. Earlier in the spring we saw the opening of a new distribution centre for Home De-pot in Shepard Industrial Park as well as a Marshalls in South Trail Crossing. Two very exciting additions to southeast Calgary!

Construction for the New Brighton Regional Park and the Quarry Park recreation centre has concluded and these facilities will be opening soon. A few months ago ground was also broken for the Seton recreation facility. Southeast Calgary has grown rapidly and the addition of these new amenities will help make this area an even better place to live, work and play!

Co ee with Your CouncillorI want to hear from you. While I have the pleasure of communicating with many of you through social me-dia, there is no replacement for face-to-face interaction.Join me for a cup of coff ee to discuss the municipal issues that matter most to you. I’ll be at the New Brighton Club (2 New Brighton Drive SE) on Tuesday, June 21 from 7:30-8:30 pm. I hope to see many of you there!

Deerfoot Trail Open HouseDeerfoot Trail is one of the most important pieces of infrastructure in south Calgary. While the Govern-ment of Alberta is currently responsible for Deerfoot, The City has an important role to play. It is my great pleasure to invite you to an open house to talk about the past, present and future of Deerfoot Trail. The open house will take place at First Alliance Church (12345 40th Street SE) on Thursday, June 23 from 7:00-9:00 pm.

In attendance will be representatives from The City, from Alberta Transportation as well as Councillors and Members of the Legislative Assembly that repre-sent south Calgary. It promises to be an interesting evening with plenty of opportunities to address your concerns about Deerfoot Trail.

What an honour to be showcased as the Community Business of the Month. After spending many years in the car business we decided it was time for something new and began removing dents from our neighbours’ vehi-cles. Twenty-one years later, we are still fi nding the job interesting and challenging and have grown to seven locations in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland and are looking to further expand into our local com-

munities to provide a dent removal service from techni-cians that you can rely upon and that you can trust to still be there tomorrow and the day after that.

We specialize in paint-less dent removal and our process is exactly that. We remove dents from your vehicles by massaging them from the inside out. Our methods are eco-friendly and kind to the planet as we can achieve our goals without using chemicals, fi llers or paints and at a fraction of the cost of a traditional body shop repair.

We have been blessed with clients encompassing full-fl edged companies to parents and teenagers. We have become the local teenagers “go to” for help getting their fi rst car looking its ultimate best which doesn’t always equate to work for us but maybe a referral to an associ-ate that can help out for a great price. There are those moments when we get a panic phone call, “can you fi x it before my husband gets back” or the sheepish look of someone who walks through the door and has to admit that they dropped the box of Christmas decorations on the roof of their Mercedes. We love them all and consid-er it an honour to be the ones people trust and come to.

The economy has defi nitely created some barriers to free spending but we have always off ered fantastic ser-vice for a great price and can off er the opportunity to make lemonade by coming to us to make your existing vehicle look new again when perhaps a new purchase isn’t in the picture.

We are local, we live here, raise our kids here and send them to school and are proud to be part of this commu-nity. We appreciate that our clients see the value in that and have shown their support for the last 21 years. In the past few years especially, the weather patterns are really changing. We would like to remind everyone that we complete work for “all” insurance companies and would be happy to help out in any way we can, whether it’s life’s dents, dings and scratches or full-on hail repair, windshield chip repair or 3M application, just give us a call.
