Unforgiveness is poison; forgiveness is the antidote Pastor Steve Kline

From the Red Letter Challenge Week 3 sermon: Brandt Jean sat in the witness chair of a Texas courtroom, and

forgave Amber Guyger. Not only did he say, “I forgive you,” but he added “I love you” (twice) and “I don’t even want you to go to jail.” She had killed his brother Botham.

He also encouraged her to find God in her life. Where Jesus is, forgiveness is sure to follow. Then he asked the judge, “I don’t know if it’s possible, but can I give her a hug? Please?”

Could you do that? For the person who was found guilty of killing someone you loved: forgive them, love them, and even hug them? I hope none of us ever has to find out.

Sin is the second most powerful force in the universe. It kills everything in its path. Sin is especially effective at destroying relationships. Take a close look at every broken marriage, broken family, and broken heart, and you find the fallout of sin doing its worst. Sin separates. Sin divides. It kills.

We live in an intensely divided world. We divide ourselves geo-graphically (East Coast, Midwest, Deep South, West Coast). We divide ourselves generationally (Baby Boomers, Gen Xers, Millennials). We certainly divide ourselves over our favorite sports teams. We are even divided over pets (cats v. dogs) and toilet paper (over v. under).

But the division doesn’t stop at those comparably trivial things. We are divided over issues of race, politics, morality and spirituality. Even in the Church, division has lived on far too long, for a people who were told, “Let there be no divisions among you.” (1 Corinthians 1:10)

Forgiveness is the antidote to division. Forgiveness swallows sin whole, and what sin has destroyed, forgiveness rebuilds, even if the new structure may not be exactly the same.

Peter asked Jesus about this in Matthew 18 – an entire chapter that focuses on the sin that divides and the forgiveness that reunites. Peter approached Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother who sins against me? As many as seven times? (Matthew 18:21). The rabbinical law from Biblical times called on three times forgiveness, then cut them loose. Peter thought he was being generous with seven.

What he really wanted was a formula for forgiveness. That way he could program his laptop to chime a notice when he was ap-proaching the limit, or use his Forgiveness FitBit to count the exact steps he needed to take.

Jesus answered, “I tell you, not as many as seven times, but 77 times.” (18:22). Some translators say “seventy times seven.” Either way, you can picture Peter staring daggers at his brother Andrew and thinking, “OK, that was 72 … 73 … 74…,” or licking his chops when he got to 489. And Jesus didn’t just pick a number out of his head. The 77 comes from Lamech in Genesis 4:23-24, who vowed to avenge anyone who wronged him 77 times over. With Jesus, though, it’s not 77 times the vengeance; it’s 77 times the mercy.

The point is that Jesus wants us to be so merciful, so forgiving, so loving, that we lose count. Like He does, when He tells us, “I will remember their sins no more,” (Jeremiah 31:34) or, “As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions

from us.” (Psalm 103:12). That’s the only separation we ever really need!

So here comes the parable: “The kingdom of heaven can be compared to a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. When he began to settle accounts, one who owed ten thousand talents was brought before him. Since he did not have the money to pay it back, his master commanded that he, his wife, his children, and everything he had be sold to pay the debt.” (18:23-25). In today’s dollars, one talent equals 130 lbs. of gold, so 10K talents amounts to over $24B – in other words, an unpayable debt. Jesus continued, “The servant fell facedown before him and said, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you everything.’ Then the master of that servant had compassion, released him, and forgave him the loan.” (18:26-27).

With those words of Jesus in mind, here’s what forgiveness requires:

1. COMPASSION: It takes empathy, which means you try to feel what they feel, if only for a moment. Try to walk in their shoes, if only for a few steps. We fail to forgive when we forget our enemy is human, and that we are sinners just like them. Yale’s Miroslav Volf commented, “Forgiveness flounders because I exclude the enemy from the community of humans even as I exclude myself from the community of sinners.”

2. RELEASE: Let him go. Let it go. From Frederick Buechner (Catholic professor): “Of the Seven Deadly Sins, anger is possibly the most fun. To lick your wounds, to smack your lips over grievances long past, to roll over your tongue the prospect of bitter confrontations still to come, to savor to the last toothsome morsel both the pain you are given and the pain you are giving back – in many ways it is a feast fit for a king. The chief drawback is that what you are wolfing down is yourself.” Unforgiveness is the poison we drink, hoping the other person will die.

3. PAYMENT: It’s going to cost you: there is always a price. You’re going to have to give something up – maybe the anger, the hatred, the bloodlust, the need to win. Jesus never makes forgiveness of others an option. Forgive as I have forgiven you. Forgives us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. When you choose not to forgive, you are inviting back your own sins, your own failures, your own debts before God. You wind up with a lot of pain all over again, with no end in sight.

The King pays it Himself, the whole $24.7 Billion, and we know full well Who the King is that Jesus refers to. He is the one who loves so deeply, forgives so freely, and pays the price so completely that sin and division are swept away forever in a flood of mercy and grace. Even for people who don’t deserve it. Especially for people who don’t deserve it.

Now you know how it feels. The compassion. The release. The freedom from a bill you can never repay. That’s the lengths Jesus goes to for the sake of forgiveness.

So ask yourself: How far am I willing to go just for the sake of forgiveness? It may not mean a hug. But what if it does?

Staffed Child Care will be available Sundays from 9am–Noon in the Noah’s Ark Nursery Room in room B115 by the MMC. There is no staffed childcare on Saturday nights during worship but feel free to use the Noah’s Ark Nursery Room.

ACTIVITY BAGS during worship (Ages 2-4 & K-2nd Grade)

Parents of 2-yr-olds through grade 2, feel free to have your child use the activity bags on the racks in the sanctuary entryway or in the MMC entryway. The bags are marked for ages 2-4 and grades K-2. Return the bags to the racks at the end of worship.

CHILDREN SUNDAY SCHOOL (3-year-olds – 4th Grade)

During the school year we have Sunday school for children from 9:15-10:30 am. Check in at the info desk by the gym for more information. Parents may attend the 9:30 am worship service during that time or attend a bible class or bring your children with you into worship at a different service.

MIDDLE School Program (D.O.G.s Confirmation) (5th – 8th Grade)

During the school year we have our Disciples of God (D.O.G.s) Middle school confirmation program every Wednesday from 6-8 pm. We eat dinner first, then we have a large group teaching time and then small group discussion time and lastly, we close in a large group game. We cover many important topics of the Christian faith during these 4 years. Contact Pastor Chad in the church office for more information.

HIGH School Uprising Program (9th – 12th Grade)

Our Uprising High School ministry meets every Wednesday from 6-8 pm during the school year. We eat dinner together, do some crazy games, have some great discussions on a Biblical topic of the night and have a ton of fun together. Contact the church office for more information.

ADULT SMALL GROUPS

Every adult would benefit from being in an Adult Small Group Bible study. It’s a great way to get connected. It’s the best way to grow deep in your faith. It’s a great way to be supported and encouraged by others in the family of God. New Worship/Ministry Facility Building construction continues to go well and is on schedule for completion in the spring of 2020. Additional funds have been recently contributed for several designated items. Those contributions will free up some funds for potential use on other high priority items. The board will make decisions on the use additional funds at the November board meeting. This action is consistent with the building project resolution approved by members that states, “Modifications to the construction project are to be authorized by the Administrative Board of Shepherd of the Hills only when gifts or pledges have been received to completely cover the costs of said modifications.” To begin establishing plans for furnishing the new facility, individual(s) have been recruited for each room. Ex-isting furnishings will be utilized where appropriate. Providing members the opportunity to donate the cost of selected furnishings is also being considered. The footprint of the new facility and enlarging the parking lot requires a larger retention pond to meet DNR requirements. Excavating the existing pond area is in progress and the expanded parking lot will be graveled in the months ahead. Paving the existing parking lot will be completed in compliance with all ADA requirements. Those requirements will accommodate members with disabilities. The current library will be moved to the adult education room in the new facility and the food pantry will occupy the current library space. Staffing Developments At the congregational meeting on October 6 voters approved a recommendation from the Administrative Board and the Family Life Ministry call committee to send a divine call to Jessica Tibben to serve as Director of Family Life Ministry. The call was sent the following week and Jessica was at Shepherd of the Hills on October 17 to meet with various groups and individuals to discuss the call. Just prior to the publication of this newsletter Jessica called and said she was accepting the call. Jessica is a 2014 graduate from Concordia University Wisconsin with a degree in Lay Ministry and Theology. She is currently serving as the Director of Youth and Family Ministry at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Pastor Steve is currently working with the Worship Ministry Team to update the Director of Worship Arts position description and to initiate steps necessary to identify candidates for that vacant position. Organizational/Leadership Development The board’s work with organizational consultant Jim Galvin continues. If you are not familiar with Jim and his relationship with SHLC, please refer to the September 2019 Newsletter. The Administrative Board is meeting with Mr. Galvin via teleconference on November 12 to receive a progress report and to receive information regarding his continuing work with Shepherd of the Hills in 2020. The RED LETTER CHALLENGNE has been a blessing for many. We have gone deeper in our understanding of being with Jesus, forgiving, serving, giving and going. The book has helped us take God’s Word into our daily life. Some have even read the book with their unchurched friends.

VISITATION TEAM: We have a new visitation team that makes visits to anyone who is in the hospital. The pastors still visit as well but with the Visitation Team you will get a visit from someone almost every day. The Visitation Team also help us continue to visit people who go into rehab facilities or who are recovering at home. If you would like to join this team email Pastor Chad, at [email protected].

PLEASE, PRAY FOR HAITI. Haitian President Jovenel Moise is under increasing pressure to step down, as violent protests destabilize the country. People have called for his resignation since August, citing shortages of fuel, food and electricity, and widespread corruption.

Most schools in Haiti never started their school year because of the inability for students and teachers to get to school because of the protests in the streets. Trucks are not able to get important supplies to businesses and hospitals either.

One AP article said, “Among those who were marching was businessman Anthony Bennett, who sought to run for President in 2015, and said the private sector also was suffering. “I think it’s time that everyone understands that things cannot continue like this anymore,” he told reporters. “Everybody is just hoping to get a visa to run away. ...The Haitian population has had enough.”

Haitians just want to leave their country but they can’t. They don’t have the money to get a passport. They aren’t able to get the documentation they need in order to be able to leave. They are stuck in a country full of corruption, violence and now depleted supplies.

Because of this unrest, we will not be taking a trip to Haiti this winter. Our Brothers and Sisters at First Lutheran Church in Jacmel, Haiti are doing the best they can to continue their ministry with what they have. We will send some money this winter in order for them to continue to work on their church building when they are able.

November Troop Support Up-Dates:

Thank you D.O.G.S. Students

We are very excited to have our Shepherd’s DOGS students collecting items to put in our soldier’s Christmas stockings this fall. Your help will make a great difference in how full we can fill the stock-ings. Items not used in the small stockings will go to the chaplains of two groups of over 1,000 troops each to help keep their large stockings, made by an elderly area woman, full through Christmas.

First United Methodist Church in Appleton is collecting troop support supplies to help a local Ameri-can Legion Auxiliary unit and us with our troop support efforts. Their help is very much appreciated.

Christmas Boxes Are Beginning to Go

Here’s our Christmas wish list for this year:

• Small Christmas ornaments Christmas music CD’s

• Hand warmers New Christmas cards

• 1 lb or smaller regular or flavored coffee, no decaf please

• Hot cocoa mixes Cappuccino mixes

• Tea or tea mixes Apple cider mixes

• Beef jerky Foil tuna pouches

• Canned soup or main dishes Instant soup

• Trail mix, granola bars Small packs of nuts or raisins

• Instant oatmeal P.B. or cheese and crackers

• Black, green, or white cotton crew socks Postage and special supplies funds

Things to keep in mind when shopping for our troops:

• Please leave items in original, unopened packaging.

• We need to see dates with at least four months before expiration printed by manufacturer.

• Except for 1lb cans of coffee, single serve drink items are best. Large canisters require measuring utensils, larger containers for mixing in, and a refrigerator to keep it in. None of those items are always available.

• No glitter. It gets on uniforms and attracts the attention of enemy snipers.
