February is Heart Month February is Heart Month for good reason. Valentines Day brings thoughts of loved ones and social engagements. Those are really good for our hearts. But there are real heart health dangers in the winter months. We New Englanders have to think of ways to protect our hearts when there is a drop in temperature, or when clearing snow, sleet, and ice. The cold causes blood vessels to contract, which can raise blood pressure, increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke. Angina, or chest pain due to coronary heart disease, can also worsen in winter when arteries constrict in the cold. Hearts have to work extra hard to shovel snow and to maintain body temperature.

Here are some tips to keep your heart healthy this season

Dress for the weather. Wear layers, hats, gloves and heavy socks.

Come inside often. Take breaks from the cold to warm up.

Make a Valentine. The Center will have a Valentine craft station to make your own Feb 3rd -13th.

Have a Health Screening. Visit our Wellness Clinic the 2nd Thursday of the month at 9:30 am.

Join us for a Valentine Lunch. Feb 12th, 11:30am

Get A Free Bucket of Sand. The Center will provide a free bucket of sand to salt your walkways and prevent falls.

Do not shovel for long periods. Pace yourself. Check with your doctor to see if it’s safe to shovel at all.

Wash your hands frequently. Respiratory infections can increase the risk of heart attacks.

Get help. If you have new symptoms of a heart condition, check it out with your doctor.

Get Fit. Join us for QiGong and Balance classes to increase stamina and stretch that wonderful heart muscle.
