    Day 2: Haridwar-Rishikesh

    Early morning transfer to Haridwar

Such is the power of the river Ganga, given a place as high as the top of Lord shivashead! Some legends associated to Ganga narrate an interesting story of her beingLord Shivas wife and a cause of jealousy to Goddess Parvati! But most legends tell hertale as an uncontrollable rush of sheer power and potentiality, so much so, that evenafter innumerable millennia, the world still pines for its drops of water!

According to legend, King Bhagirath belonging to the lineage of Lord Rama, broughtthe river Ganga down to the earth to help 60,000 of his ancestors to attain salvation.

When one looks at India as the land of spirituality, the image of the holy river Gangawith lamps floating on it, Sadhus clad in orange decorating the stairs of its ghats withtouches of mysticism and thousands of men and women washing their sins off into theriver leaves an intriguing, lasting impression on ones soul.

This tradition continues till date and the ashes of believers are still immersed into theriver.

Interestingly, even the great Mughal emperor Akbar drank water from the river Gangaby getting it specially packed and dispatched in sealed containers, calling it the

Water of Immortality, as mentioned in Ain-e-Akbari, written in the 16th century byAbul Fazal.

The present day foundation of the city and the renovation of the ghats is said to havebeen done by Raja Man Singh, whose ashes, it is said, were immersed by Akbar himself.

Even today, the river Ganga is much more than just a symbol of purity, it is quitephysically so as it sanctifies not just ones soul by absolving ones sins but even onesbody!Much of scientific research establishes the river Gangas special qualities. Ganga

water is considered a natural purifier, naturally antibacterial. It has been observedthat the water from Ganga remains fresh for a very long time and water from theupper portions does not allow mosquitoes to breed!

A lot of reasons like the rivers containing anti-putrefaction properties, the presenceof Bacteriophages, which gives it an anti-bacterial nature, its descent from theHimalayas where a lot of therapeutic herbs and shrubs grow and even an unknownfactor, which makes the river retain dissolved oxygen from the atmosphere are allattributed to the cause. There may be numerous opinions and observations but one truth remains: It is in thelap of the river ganga where it all ends, it is here that the world comes to wash itself

off ones guilt, it is here where the human meets his source when his ashes areimmersed even today. And Haridwar is the centre of it all!

After flowing for 253 kilometres from its source at Gaumukh from the Gangotri

Glacier, the river Ganga enters North India for the first time at Haridwar or Hard-war-a city and municipality in the Haridwar district of Uttarakhand, India, giving thecity its ancient name of Gangadwra

Literally meaning Gateway to Lord Shivawith Hara standing for Shiva anddwar for gate, Haridwar is one ofthe 7 holiest places for believers ofHinduism for many reasons.

The legendary event of the Samudra

Manthan as described in the Puranasmentions how the Amrit or the Elixirof Immortality that was churned outof the sea was spilled at 4 places, namely, Ujjain, Nashik, Prayag andHaridwar.

In Haridwar, Brahma Kund, located at Har Ki Pauri,is considered to be the spot where the Amrit felland is one of the most sacred ghats.

Har ki Pauri is also called so as it is believed that LordVishnu left his footprint on a stone set in a wall wherethe holy river touches it all the time. Also, importantly,Haridwar is known as the home of Goddess Sati andthe palace of her father Daksha.

Seeped in spirituality deeper than the river, with itsrich ancient religious and cultural heritage, theplace resonates with a unique combination ofhistory and transcendence, liberation and peace!

Being one of the oldest living cities, Haridwar is still home to many old havelis andmansions with intricate stonework and exquisite murals.

    Daksheswara Mahadev Temple

A small colony in Haridwar in the state of Uttarakhand in north India, Kankhal is oneof 'Panch Tirth' (Five Pilgrimages) within Haridwar and has been significant sincecenturies!Yes, this historical town of Kankhal finds mention in texts like the Mahabharata andeven in the creative works of classical Sanskrit dramatist and poet Kalidas of the 3rdcentury AD.

"Here, O king, before you is the Kanakhala range, the favourite resort of sages. 'Andthere is the mighty river Ganga. Here, in ancient times, the holy sage Sanatkumaraattained ascetic success. O scion of the Ajamidha race, by performing your ablu-tions here in this river, you will be freed from all thy sins.

    - The Mahabharata, Book 3: Vana Parva: Tirtha-yatra Parva

-- The Mahabharata, Book 13:Anusasanika Parva

Through the heart-stirring views of the surrounding areas and the Himalayan land-scape, the journey from Haridwar to Kankhal takes you to the inner recesses of adistant spiritualism. It is there that you find the Daksha Mahadev Temple, the crowning

    glory of the town.

located approximately 4 Km away from Haridwar in the south Kankhal town, theDaksha Mahadev Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva & ironically combines the namesof King Daksha and Lord Shiva as Mahadev. Even amongst a plethora of templesdedicated to Lord Shiva, this particular temple gains special significance. But whyspecial significance? Because of its location. Location?Yes.

Though the present temple was built by Queen Dhankaur in 1810 and rebuilt in 1962, itis one of the most sacred places, especially for Saivites for a particular reason. And

that reason is embedded in the legend of Lord Shiva, Sati, and King Daksha.

The Yajnashala (pronounced as Yagya-shaalaa) or the place where Yajnas (fire sacri-fices) are conducted is so old that it is deemed to have witnessed the most movingevents that shaped the very life of Lord Shiva himself! As legend goes, a Maha Yagya was conducted by King Daksha, to which Sati, LordShivas wife, went uninvited. It is believed that it was on this very ground that the Yajna

was conducted. Unable to bear her husbands insult by her father, Sati gave herselfup to flames on this very spot.Though he was later restored to life (with his head replaced with that of a goat) seeing

his beloved burning alive, Lord Shiva had cut-off the head of King Daksha right here.

Standing on the ground of high emotional energy, the temple commemorates that

event with thousands of devotees drawn to it. It is a place of pilgrimage for Shaivitedevotees, particularly on Maha Shivaratri when special rituals are performed. The Daksha Mahadev Temple becomes all the more important due to its situation inKankhal which is one of the five sacred sites in the town of Haridwar in Uttarakhand.Close to this temple are two other holy places, Daksha Ghat and Nileshwar MahadevTemple.

The temple is surrounded by interesting temples and ashrams including a ParadShivling (Mercury Shivling) temple dedicated to Lord Shiva & Shree Ma AnandamayiAshram.

Interestingly, it also has some famous trees around it like the Rudraksha tree and anage old tree which is actually a combination of 3 trees together with their roots inter-twined inseparably almost paying homage to the eternal Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and

Mahesh! After your visit to the temple, you arrive at the Ganges river banks/ghats Har ki Pauri (Footsteps of Lord Shiva) and witness the Hindu devotees take their holy

bath in the Ganges and visit the nearby temples dedicated mostly to Lord Shiva.

After visiting Haridwar leave for Rishikesh- it is a 45 mins journey.

Arrive at Rishikesh and check-in into the hotel and relax.
