Meeting EMI requirements can bedifficult and expensive. Try it the easyway with Fujitsu’s Spread SpectrumClock Generators – SSCGs. Withpossible EMI improvements of up to -19dB you can reduce developmenteffort and avoid usage of othercomponents like ferrites, shieldingand noise filters.
Spread Spectrum Clock Generators
DescriptionMeeting the strict requirements ofEMI regulations like CISPR is gettingmore and more difficult with highlyintegrated and high speed systems.Such systems radiate significant EMInoise at the main operation clockfrequency and its harmonics, resultingin high peaks in the frequencyspectrum. Developers have to expendsubstantial effort to design standardsconformant systems in a conventionalway. Furthermore, devices becomemore expensive and bigger ifhardware counter-measures are
required like bypass capacitors, chokecoils, ferrites or shielding. Fujitsu’sSpread Spectrum Oscillators spreadthe radiated energy to a widerfrequency band, thus reducing thepeak noise. EMI improvement of up to-19dB is possible without furthermeasures.
Benefits/Features Reduction of peaks in the
radiated frequency spectrum ofup to -19dB
Reduced cost (no choke coils, shielding, ferrite or noise filters)
 Smaller systems Less development and

AUTOMOTIVE solutionsAutomotive Demonstrators onFujitsu’s booth at Embedded World2010
This year, as in the many previousyears of our presence at EmbeddedWorld, Fujitsu Microelectronics Europehas set up demonstrators addressingtopics from the automotiveapplication area.
The highlight is the cockpit equippedwith instrument cluster and bodyelectronics combined with a drivesimulation. We have called this the‘Connectivity Demo’ because allcomponents interact with each other. The second demonstrator is a rearlight module which implements allthe state-of-the-art functionalrequirements of a modern car’s backlight unit. Come along to our boothNo. 314 in hall 12, take a seat andfind out what else thesedemonstrators hold for you.
Connectivity DemonstratorThe ‘Connectivity Demo’ is anillustration of Fujitsu’s know-how insystem solutions. Rather than sellingsemiconductor silicon only, Fujitsuoffers expertise in all relevantapplication areas around instrumentclusters and body electronics, e.g. thenetworking of several control units bymeans of interfaces such as CAN, UARTand APIX®.
At first glance you will recognise justthe racing seat with steering wheel, pedals and the 42-inch TFT monitoron the wall inviting you to take thechallenge in a racing game. If you lookmore closely, you will discover more
functions implemented in sub-unitsequipped with microcontrollers fromFujitsu’s 16- and 32-bit automotiveMCU series.
Take a seat and you can play a racinggame called ‘TORCS’ running on a PClocated beneath the cockpit. Whileplaying the game, data from your carlike speed, engine rpm, and engagedgear is extracted from this PC-application. Via UART communicationthe data is made available to acontrol unit called ‘UART2CANgateway’. This gateway unit wasdeveloped using the starter kit forthe 16FX micorocontroller series(SK 16FX-100PMC). The applicationdata received from the PC ispre-processed and converted into CANmessages as happens in a real car.
Three further control units areconnected to this CAN bus. Theseother network nodes are amass-production style instrumentcluster (dashboard) mounted abovethe steering wheel, a rear lightmodule (under remote control of thebody MCU) and a central informationdisplay (CID) controller that providesa top view of the race-track with alive update of your car and allopponents’ car positions on a TFTdisplay.

All software running the dashboard iscustom-made and based on AUTOSAR.The instrument cluster displaysspeed, rpm of the engine, fuel andcoolant temperature utilising fouranalogue gauges driven by steppermotors. Numerous tell-tales and adisplay for messages from theon-board computer, complete theuser interface. All functionality of thedashboard is based on the 32-bit FRhost processor, MB91F467D, incombination with the graphic displaycontroller MB86276 ‘Lime’ and ofcourse the link via the CAN networkthat enables all communicationbetween the PC-based game and allinstrument displays.
The body controller responsible forthe rear lights is based on a 32-bitstarter kit of the MB91460 series(SK-91F467B). In fact there are tworear light modules that are underremote control of the body MCU,MB91F467B. The light bulbs areswitched via MOSFET drivers. The rearlight modules are mounted on bothrear sides of the cockpit. The rearlights are operated in synchronisationwith the events reported from the PCgame, e.g. pushing the brake in thecockpit will be signaled to the PCgame and in return the PC gameissues a signal that the brake requestwas accepted. This acknowledgementis used to finally turn on the brakelights in the rear modules.
The CID control unit - as well as beingconnected to the CAN bus - is acombination of a 32-bit MCU starterkit (SK-91460S) and a remotedisplay board featuring Fujitsu’s‘Indigo’ display controller MB88F332.

Rear light module demonstrator
www.fme-mcu.com
Rear Light Module DemonstratorThe (stand-alone) rear light moduledemonstrator is similar to the rearlight modules of the Connectivitydemonstrator. It is developed on topof a 16-bit starter kit comprising a16FX microcontroller, the MB96F348.
The main task of the MCU is drivingpower MOSFETs that are switching thedifferent bulbs and LEDs of a rear lightmodule. Please check out thefunctions of the demonstrator usingthe control panel in manual mode orwatch the operations issued inautomatic mode. The implementedfunctions are: Indicator Rear light Brake light Fog light Back-up light
Both modes support error detectionindicated by an LED in the controlpanel. Any broken bulb or LED can beidentified. The error detection isperformed even when the driver is in‘off’ state. Broken illumination can beemulated by a removable short-circuitjumper on the control panel for eachindividual light.
