Taking aim for summer fun.
The 2016 camping and reunion season is beginning, and for many it renews feelings
and fond memories of days past. “Youth camps and reunions were the highlight of my
youth,” for Becky Ertle.
The Chris and Rusti Sparks family count the annual float trip, Daddy Long-legs,
open-air cabins, ballroom dancing and campfires, strengthened by community service
projects, theme classes and dynamic guest ministers among their memories.
Ninety-six-year-old Bob Laudie treasures his days at “family camp in California,
where we had breakfast and lunch together and really got to know the families.
Carolyn Otis said, “I’ll never forget the youth retreat at Maquoketa where the
staff played Everly Brothers “Wake Up Little Suzie” (LOUDLY) to get the kids up in
the morning.” Dick Otis recalled “the closing songs at campfire.”
Carolyn added, “There’s a Long, Long Trail A Winding’ and how the song transitioned
from one to another.”
“The campfire songs, skits, and testimonies were what I loved best,” for Sue
Wakefield. “I loved the feeling of acceptance I always found at camp.”
John Saur remembers how Jack Perry, who was coping with Parkinson’s Disease,
agreed to be camp pastor at Junior High Camp at CVG. “In spite of his physical limita-
tions, he was amazing; running, playing, prayer of administration with the campers.”
Charlene Loberg-Saur treasures receiving her Evangelist’s Blessing at the Red
River District Reunion in Minnesota. “There was no doubt of what a loving, caring God
we have!” she said.

up at the sky with sun filtering through the trees.”
Cathy Loy found her “future husband as we collided in a blob of ketchup at Senior High
camp!“
On the light side, Niomia Lindburg’s favorite memory is “graduating from camping in a
tent at Cedar Valley Grove to staying in a castle” in recent years. Bev Lindburg recalls learning
that latrine was another word for bathroom when she learned she was to clean the latrine
during her first camping experience at Camp Nauvoo.
Many recalled various items of clothing, including Bill Gardner Sr.’s shorts, being run up
the flagpole during youth camps many, many years ago.

I am guessing that everyone reading
this newsletter ate dinner last night. It
might have been made from a box of macaroni and cheese, or
came from the local deli. I am imagining, too, that on your last
birthday, you received some kind of greeting: on Facebook, a
card in the mail, or a picture drawn by a 6-year-old. Simple
blessings!
You are reading this, so you have good eyes or are blessed
with a friend who is reading it to you. or you have access to a
computer for the e-mail version, or a mailbox if this was mailed to you.
Maybe you remember this song by Irving Berlin, sung by Rosemary
Clooney, and more recently by Diana Krall:
When I'm worried and I can't sleep
I count my blessings instead of sheep
And I fall asleep counting my blessings
When my bankroll is getting small
I think of when I had none at all
And I fall asleep counting my blessings
Are we spending time counting our blessings? And are we saying “Thank
you?” Let’s remember to say thank you to the giver for that birthday card, then
send birthday greetings to others. Thank our Lord for food to eat, then offer
food to those less fortunate. Give from the heart, share from your bounty,
allocate some time for good causes, and assign some of funds where needed.
Our God is a Generous God (with a capital G). We thank God by living a
generous life. We can trust in the promise written in the Book of Luke, Chap-
ter 6, 38th verse, (Living Bible): “For if you give, you will get! Your gift will return to
you in full and overflowing measure, pressed down, shaken together to make room
for more, and running over.” — Bishop Jane McDonald
Be Thankful

Congratulations
Birthdays
Dean Truelove, Galesburg, 85.
Edwina Crisman, Galesburg, 76.
Marilyn Rice, Galesburg, 77.
Happy Birthday
The book repurposing
project continues to be
successful. We are down
to around 200 books. This
means we have recycled
over 2,000 books and printed
materials. Often, as the older
generation passes, there is
no one who wants their
church books, periodicals, or tracts. I strongly
urge giving them to the mission center for use
by members and others who will put them to
good use. Just put them in a box marked
“MC Book Project” and take them to your
local church or reunion. I will make the con-
nection to pick up the materials.
