REMEMBERING

THE HOLOCAUST

As time passes, we unfortunately find our community with fewer Holocaust survivors and we can now extend that notion to include fewer children of Holocaust survivors. It is difficult to try to comprehend the madness and hatred that would allow a largely educated, culturally, and technologically advanced nation that was pre-War Germany to spearhead a plan for the genocide of a people that would find acceptance by so many nations in the rest of Europe. It is our Holocaust survivors and their children that have provided us with an apparent and observable record and a touching and meaningful reality to this catastrophic part of our history. But what happens when they are gone? If you have been in Israel on Yom HaShoah, you will know that the observance of that date is engrained in the fabric and history of that nation. Israel presently embraces its existing Holocaust survivors and proclaims them as heroes.

Above: Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial at Earl

Those on sidewalks or in stores will stand in their place in solemn attention. Motor vehicles on roads and even highways will come to a stop in their lanes and the operators and passengers will exit their vehicles and stand to remember and memorialize the victims of the Holocaust. The situation is, of course, much different and more troubling for us here in the Diaspora. We are but a small minority and the majority of our citizens will likely not even know that Yom Hashoah has come and gone. Others will fail to grasp the enormity of this man-made catastrophe, the significance to them and history of this event, and the need to unite and work to ensure that the hatred that permitted this evil to occur is not perpetuated. Recent surveys have concluded that the majority of Canadians do not even know that six million Jews were killed in the Holocaust. Approximately one-half of Canadians could not name a concentration camp or ghetto. We at the Pride do take Holocaust remembrance seriously. In addition to our support and parti-cipation in Holocaust Remembrance Week that takes place in November each year, we have two programs that should be of interest to you. On May 11, 2019 we will, again, be having our ‘Shabbat to Remember’ Service. This is our way of not only honouring our own Holocaust survivors and their children, but in so doing also honouring and memorializing all victims of the Holocaust and remembering this event in our history. This program is simple but effective. We offer, on that Shabbat morning, to give an Aliyah to all Holocaust survivors and their children who choose to participate. For those participating, when they are called to their honour a brief history concerning them and their families will be read out and we will be asked to stand. We stand not only to honour the individual but the person’s family and through them all victims of the holocaust. The El Maleh Rachamim and Kaddish prayers will be recited. An upgraded Kiddush will follow the service where a Holocaust survivor and/or child of a Holocaust survivor will address our congregants. There are two ways we require your assistance to ensure the success of this program. If you are a congregant who is a Holocaust survivor or the child of a Holocaust survivor, we ask that you contact our office and request your Aliyah well in advance of the May 11, 2019 date for this event. You will be asked to leave your name, whether you are a Cohen, Levi, or Yisrael, and to provide your contact information including your telephone number and your email address if available. If we do not already have your brief history available, you will be contacted by one of our volunteers so that we can put together your

brief history to be read out when you are called to your Aliyah. Secondly, we need your attendance. In being present you will not only be supporting our survivors and children of survivors but memorializing all victims of the Holocaust and confirming your commitment to never forget this horrendous event in our and the world’s history. The second event at our shul is the Yellow Candle program. We will once again be making available to you a yellow bag containing a yellow candle, and information sheet and prayer. The yellow colour is to symbolize the yellow Star of David that many Jews during the Holocaust were required to wear. The yellow candle is a yahrzeit candle to be lit in our homes on the evening of May 1, 2019, to remember and memorialize all the victims of the Holocaust. In doing so, you will unite with Jews throughout the world in this sacred duty not to forget. It is hoped that this will not only be a part of your own observance but a means to inform your family members and friends of the significance of your lighting of this candle. The bags will be available for pick-up from the office during normal office hours from the middle of April. They will also be handed out to those attending the Passover morning service on Friday, April 26, 2019. There is no cost for the bag but we ask that you consider making a donation with the proceeds to be used for future Holocaust programming at our synagogue. Past donations have been used to cover expenses for our participation in last year’s Holocaust Remembrance Week and to purchase the yellow bags and their contents for this year’s Yellow Candle program. We have an obligation to memorialize those who perished in the Holocaust and to honour Holocaust survivors. We have a duty not only to our people but to the world to ensure that the Holocaust is remembered. Join us in this meaningful and sacred task. PURIM!

Purim starts the evening of Wednesday March 20, and falls on Thursday March 21. We all know the story – Haman’s plot to destroy the Jews was thwarted by a series of amazing events and bizarre coincidences involving Esther and Mordechai. There was no overt miracle, but many events occurred that were “hidden” miracles – and in fact Queen Esther’s name is from the Hebrew word that means “hidden.” Our evening Megillah reading starts 5:45 p.m. on Thursday March 21 in the sanctuary with the PowerPoint animated Megillah reading. The Purim PARTY follows right after the Megillah reading. The party features great entertainment, refreshments and hamentashen, costume contest, and much more! Please pre-register at the shul office by March 18 for the party. Admission – members and immediate family $10, non-members $20, reduced prices for children and teens

PESACH!

The first Seder is Friday night, April 19, 2019. The first two days of Passover are Saturday and Sunday April 20 and 21, and the last two days are Friday and Saturday, April 26 and 27, 2019. To make things really convenient this year, Friday April 19 is a statutory holiday. We look forward to seeing you at services on those days (and any other day for that matter)!

Chametz Throughout the eight days of Passover, we abstain from eating any trace of leavened product or chametz. Foods made from wheat, rye, barley, oats, and all grain products are subject to the laws of chametz. All food and drink for Passover require endorsements from a reputable agency such as “COR.” “OU, or “MK” (and there are others) with further indication that they are kosher for Pesach, with those words or with a “P” symbol. (Yes, “P” is for Pesach/Passover, not Pareve.) Symbols below are all TM registered trademarks.

Selling your Chametz Remember to sell your chametz since we are not permitted to own chametz during Passover. Chametz that is sold must be stored away in closets or cabinets that are locked or taped. KOL Y I SRAEL

P U R I M A N D P E S A C H

Over the years, I have bristled on hearing about the importance of doing this holiday and that observance for our children. While our children are important, they learn from us. If we continue to make our observances entirely pediatric, they will not be motivated to continue when they become young adults. What do these holidays have in common? They both commemorate a geulah – a redemption. One redemption is from Egypt. The other redemption is from Haman. What do these holidays not have in common? Children. You may be surprised. Please allow me to explain. Yes ... Purim is fun. Yes ... we get to make lots of noise. Yes...we get to put on costumes. But that applies to the adults also. And yes, adults like making noise. Adults like to put on costumes. Adults should do that for the holiday. Much of what happens in the holiday observance is very adult. We could do nothing greater for our children than to let them see us getting caught up in the observance of our holidays. If any holiday is pediatric, it would be Pesach, because Pesach is the holiday on which we are supposed to teach our children. What is the limit to its pediatric nature? The limit is that the obligation to teach our children does not change. I am always a little uncomfortable at my own Seder table. I run one of the Sedarim at our house. Rav Jen runs the other. The discomfort though is that I often wonder whether my parents should lead a Seder. Their obligation to teach me has not changed even though I am pushing 50. Is it usurping their position to lead a Seder in their presence? As we approach both holidays, let us remember to enjoy them, not just for our children, but also for ourselves. Simchat Purim and Hag Kasher v'Sameach. Rav Sean Gorman

WHAT ’S HAPPENING

F R O M T H E C H A I R

There are many things coming up at the Pride that we should all be excited about. We are hosting a musical concert on March 17, with local talent to entertain and engage all. This event is the first of what the committee is planning as a series of musical concerts. Our Purim party will feature a BBQ dinner, Pride’s Got Talent Costume Contest, a DJ, with prizes for the best costume in each age category. This is a party that should not be missed. We are sure that all who attend will be raving about it to all of their friends and family who missed out. Call the office to confirm your attendance and come celebrate and laugh with us. Passover is quickly approaching, and we are here to help you as you move through the holiday. In addition to our services, we will be commemorating Yom HaShoah with the distribution of Yellow Candle bags, available through the office mid-April, as well as at the non-Shabbat services of Passover. To honour our shul members who lost loved ones in the Holocaust, we will be holding our Annual Holocaust Remembrance Shabbat Service on May 11. For more information, please refer to page 2 or the flyers in this newsletter. All these programs require volunteers to make them happen. It is unfortunate that in a shul with over 300 family members, it is a small core group of people that step up to volunteer their time and efforts. This is not right. All of our membership has the opportunity to benefit from these undertakings, yet only a few are willing to step up. Now is your time. Please consider reaching out to me and I can direct you to committees where your help would be greatly appreciated. You can be a part of all that is new and exciting at the Pride. All you have to do is speak up. On behalf of the Boards for both the synagogue and the SBS, and all of the respective committee Chairs, I urge you to please consider taking an active role in your shul and participate in the opportunities it provides for its members and the community at large. I look forward to seeing all of you at these upcoming events. I also look forward to hearing from you regarding your interest to get involved in supporting these events. I thank you all for your consideration of this request. Steven Bloom Chair

ON LEADERSHIP One of the principal duties of a leader is to see that things are done right. The reverse is also true. They have the duty of keeping their eyes open for anything that seems to be going wrong. In personal human terms, these two functions add up to praise on one hand and criticism on the other. The leader who never criticizes when things go badly is erring just as much as one who never praises when things go well. If someone is not corrected when something is not being done properly, they will probably assume that they are doing things well. Even if they are doing a good job, not being praised for one’s efforts does not promote feelings of future motivation. Remaining silent does not breed enthusiasm in anyone. The best way to get better effort and better results is to build up confidence by supporting others and demonstrating that their work is valuable and appreciated. The surest way to mishandle a problem is to avoid facing up to it, therefore timing is also important. Face a recognized problem in the moment, not six months after the fact.

Good leaders criticize only when necessary and in the spirit of helpfulness. They also take the time to praise when praise is deserved. When there is a matter of concern, solving it should be in a way that will bolster pride instead of crushing it. Future growth and next steps for improvement should be paramount to the discussion. Making others feel needed and wanted is a huge part of any leader’s job. The best way to accomplish this is to understand that praising the good is even more important to future results than criticizing the bad. Nevertheless, it has to be understood that criticism has its place. Criticism is best when it’s presented like an explanation with a growth mindset. Willy Lindo Vice Chair

S I STERHOOD NEWS In 2018, the Pride of Israel Sisterhood celebrated its 75th anniversary. It was a major milestone and we are proud of how we have helped the synagogue to thrive over the years. However, Sisterhoods and the roles that women have played to help shape Judaism and our culture go back farther than 75 years. As we celebrate Purim and Passover, two women come to mind: • Queen Esther who exposed Haman’s plot to kill

the Jewish People • Yocheved who defied the Pharaoh’s edict to kill

the first-born sons of the Hebrews by placing Moses in a basket.

Both of these holidays celebrate the redemption of the Jewish people. These women found strength within themselves to overcome their fears so that the Jewish nation could continue to flourish. Our Jewishness is inherited from our mothers. Despite our having more women in today’s work-place, we are still actively providing a home for our spouses and children. But this comes at a cost. There is less time for women to volunteer and as a result, many Sisterhoods are finding a need to reinvent themselves. The Pride of Israel Sisterhood continues to do so. We are evolving to meet the needs of our congregation by developing programs that integrate friends and families. In April, Donna Atkin will be hosting a session on mindfulness (see our invitation in this newsletter). In the fall, we will have our annual book talk with Rene Geist and we are planning to host a jewelry-making event. Our Sisterhood vision is strong. We exist to enrich the lives of our members, families, and community. We foster friendship, a feeling of belonging, and a sense of community amongst the female members of the Pride of Israel Synagogue and the Sick Benefit Society. Our goal is to strengthen and unite the members with activities that support the Synagogue, the community, and self-development. I encourage you to consider joining Sisterhood or coming out to at least one of our events this year. On behalf of the Sisterhood, I want to wish you and your loved ones a Happy Purim and a Happy Passover. Chag Sameach and all the best. Carol Arshoff President Pride of Israel Sisterhood

ARE YOU HERE FOR US?

I M P O R T A N T M E S S A G E F O R O U R

M E M B E R S

We are here for you. The SBS Executive and the Board of Governors of the Pride of Israel Synagogue are here for you. The clergy is here for you as is all of our support staff. Whether in time of need, for a simcha or a simple question, we are all here for you. My question to you is this. Are you here for us? The volunteer committees of our shul community work tirelessly to organize and promote events to engage our members. Our educational programs support those who are interested in learning to speak Hebrew, those who are inquiring more into the parsha and for individuals who enjoy learning the Torah, Word by Word. Israeli movies are shown once monthly in addition to the weekly Shabbat programs that are offered for a range of audiences. The work that goes into developing and supporting the continuation of these programs is all done by volunteers, who do this so that your Shul can be there for you.

There are four events coming up that a great deal of planning and organization has gone into developing. The Pride of Israel is hosting a musical concert on Sunday March 17, with doors opening at 1:30, concert starting at 2:30. Details of this can be found in the flyer in this newsletter as well as on our Shul website. The Pride’s annual Purim Party is being held on Thursday March 21 at our synagogue, beginning at 5:45 pm. This is sure to be an amazing party. There will be a BBQ dinner, costume contests for a range of ages, all with prizes of extraordinary value and a DJ for all the kids. Details are on the flyer in this newsletter and on the website.

In mid-April, we will be distributing Yellow Candle bags to commemorate Yom HaShoah. A donation is appreciated for each of these bags. Check the flyer in this newsletter and website for details. In May, we will be running our Annual Holocaust Remembrance Service, with details provided on the elsewhere in this newsletter and on our website.

So there are many varied and engaging oppor-tunities coming up for members of all ages and interests. The caveat to all of this is simple. If people do not show up to attend these programs, we will not be able to continue to run them. The volunteers will become discouraged and there will be no new ideas or energy going in to develop these programs. We are working hard to ensure that the Pride is more than a place that you visit occasionally. It is our goal that the Pride is not only where you go to daven, but also to embrace learning, to laugh, and to build and share friendships. This is our community and we want it be yours as well.

Please show up and join in on all that we are offering. Without your presence, these will not continue to be held. I will ask again, are you here for us? Michele Axelrod Vice President, Sick Benefit Society

F IRST A ID REFRESH The health and safety of our members and congregants is of utmost importance to us. Two years ago we offered an opportunity for our members to take a First Aid course through the shul. This provided training in CPR, the use of the defibrillator and basic first aid. Upon completion of the course, all who participated received certification. Certifications are valid for two years and must be renewed. As such, we will once again be extending the offer to obtain first aid training to all of our members. All who wish to obtain their certification are welcome to participate. Costs associated with taking part in this course will be based on the number of people who participate. Details of the costs and date will be provided in the near future, once we have the numbers of people who are interested. Please contact the office to have your name added to the list of interested participants. I would like to reiterate that the well-being of our members and congregants is very important to us. This is just one more way that we can all be there to support one another in time of need. Thank you all for expressing an interest in obtaining this training.

YOUNG ADULT EVENTS

Twelve young adults from across the greater Toronto area braved the snow and wind to launch the Pride of Israel’s Inaugural Games Night for ages 20-40. Participants enjoyed a fun night of board games, refreshments, and socializing. It was a great opportunity for networking and feeling part of the Jewish community. All those in attendance expressed interest in attending future events. The next Young Adult event will coincide with the Pride of Israel’s Purim Party on Thursday March 21, 2019 at 5:45 pm. The event will have a BBQ Seudah, DJ dancing, and a costume contest with the chance to win an awesome prize of significant value. It promises to be a fun night. Tables will be reserved for young adults. Please call the office to prepay for the Purim Party and leave your email address to be included on the contact list for future events.

The Torah speaks to each person in every generation, so let it speak to you.

This is a unique learning opportunity to join a study group under the assistance of Rav Sean Gorman

the group, or participants can choose to learn from the presenters.

WEDNESDAYS 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. For more information, leave a message in the office for a call back.

We’ve started with the Book of Exodus. One of the resource texts we are using is The Commentators’ Bible

The Commentators’ Bible, first published 500 years ago as the “Rabbinic Bible,” the biblical commentaries known as the Miqra’ot Gedolot have inspired and educated generations of Hebrew readers. With this edition, the voices of Rashi, Ibn Ezra, Nachmanides, Rashbam, and other medieval commentators come alive once more, speaking in a contemporary English translation annotated and explicated for lay readers. Each page contains several Hebrew verses from the book of Exodus, surrounded by both the 1917 and 1985 JPS translations and new English translations of the major commentators.

WE’RE LOOKING for TEEN HELPERS WE’RE LOOKING for PARTICIPANTS AGES 6 -12

With the assistance of a Junior Congregation leader, we are looking for teens willing to learn how to lead a short youth service for 6-12 year olds. The once a month program is eligible for Community Service hours. We’ll match the teens to the tasks based on skills and interest, everything from taking turns leading prayers which are said in unison, to taking out the Torah, giving out Aliya’s, giving a short D’var Torah, acting as group secretary and emailing group reminders. The teens develop leadership and team building skills, and all participants, especially pre-bar and bat mitzvah kids, become comfortable with a Synagogue service. Amongst the kibbutzing, learning is happening and friendships are formed. After all, isn’t that what happens at the adult Minyan too? Help your child or grandchild experience the joy of Judaism and learning without grades. This program ran successfully a number of years ago. But the teens and participants moved on to university. We’re hoping to re-launch the program. A minimum number of teens and participants are needed. Please leave a message in the office for more information.

UNDER OUR ROOF

C A R E A N D M A I N T E N A N C E

O F T H E S H U L

We are moving toward the next stage of our renovations, formerly known as the Lissom Project. While there have been a few minor snags with the securing of plans to move forward, we are confident that this bump in the road will be rectified through a planned meeting with the Committee of Adjustment. The concerns revolve around the coverage and the number of parking spaces on our property. This is a minor setback and we are looking to proceed with the plans as displayed in our lobby without too much of a delay. There is another matter in the ongoing security of our synagogue that must be addressed. We have been having difficulties with our aging alarm system. Over time, these systems break down and cease to operate flawlessly. We are currently facing false alarms and difficulties in arming the system properly. It is vital that we have a security system that protects our house. Whether it be evening lessons, classes, committee meetings, or simply the protection of our building and its contents, we must have a system that, when armed, works as it should. While there are grants available, none are suitable for our present needs, so we must cover the costs of this system on our own. I am reaching out to our congregants to help cover the costs of a new alarm system. All installed, the cost will not exceed $7,500. If you can contribute to this worthy cause or wish to donate the entire cost of supplying and installing this system, please reach out to me and I will share the details of this undertaking with you. I look forward to speaking with you further on matters surrounding our security needs, the Lissom Project, and/or any other issues that you want to discuss. Steven Bloom Synagogue Chair House Chair

RECIPE BOX

S H E P H E R D ’ S P I E When we think of Passover, we tend to think of all the restrictions on the food to which we must adhere. This alone makes preparing meals for Passover seemingly more difficult than need be. It is all about learning how to substitute, how to pare down, how to focus on what you have on hand to work with, and being creative. In my household, the focus is on preparing the meals for both of the Seders. The remaining days of Passover are filled with salads, lighter meals, and of course, the leftovers! My husband does not eat leftovers, so this is where the creativity comes in. After the Seders, I find I have a variety of meat and vegetables left over. Here is a wonderful way to make a new meal based on these leftovers with some added fresh ingredients. The base of this recipe is ground meat, vegetables, tomatoes and mashed potatoes, some of which you may have on hand, some which you may have to make fresh.

20

Page 21: SHUL MATTERS€¦ · all grain products are subject to the laws of chametz. All food and drink for Passover require endorsements from a reputable agency such as “COR.” “OU,

Ingredients: (If starting from fresh – or use a combination of fresh and leftover vegetables) 3 Tbsp. olive oil 1 ½ onions diced 2 carrots cut into ¼” slices 2 stalks celery sliced into ¼” pieces 4 cloves fresh garlic chopped ¼ tsp each salt and pepper 1 sprig fresh thyme 1 bay leaf 1 28 oz. can of whole peeled tomatoes 2 lbs. ground meat (can use leftovers chopped very fine) 1 tsp. sugar 1 tsp. chicken powder 2 – 4 large Yukon Gold or Idaho potatoes – mashed with 1 tbsp. margarine, salt and 1 tbsp. non-dairy creamer To make the mashed potatoes: 1. Peel the potatoes. 2. Cut into chunks of the same size and boil

until soft. 3. When soft, mash with salt, pepper and non-

dairy creamer. 4. For extra creamy potatoes, use a hand beater

and beat until creamy and smooth, and then add the margarine, salt, pepper and non-dairy creamer to taste. Never mash potatoes in a food processor. They will turn sticky and gluey. They need to be aerated with the wire beaters.

Preparation: 1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees 2. Heat the oil in a large frying pan over medium

heat. 3. Sauté the onions, carrots and celery for 3-4

minutes. Add the garlic, salt and pepper. Add the leaves from the sprig of thyme and the bay leaf.

4. Remove the canned tomatoes from their liquid and drain well. Chop and add to the pan. Add the meat/ground beef and sauté until browned, 12-15 minutes. Remove the bay leaf and discard it.

5. Add the sugar and the chicken stock powder. 6. Transfer the meat mixture into a medium

ovenproof casserole dish. Cover with the mashed potatoes.

7. Place in the oven and bake for 20-30 minutes until the potatoes start to turn brown.

Serve this new take on leftovers (or beautiful casserole from scratch) with a fresh salad, tossed with a light vinaigrette dressing. From my kitchen to yours, enjoy. Wishing you all Chag Kasher v’Sameach. Michele Axelrod Vice President Sick Benefit Society

HOORAY …

M E M B E R M A R V I N L I T V A K

I love Washington, especially in the springtime and the fall. Summer, it sizzles and winter it drizzles. I know. It’s supposed to be Paris that does all that stuff but whatever season it is, Washington exudes power and wealth. Wherever you are in Congress you can feel the world at your doorstep. But the reality of everyday governing isn’t always that glamorous. It can be somewhat tedious and frustrating. Take the case of doing business in the richest capital city in the world. If you’re not up on the current bills being presented to the House, you can be made fodder by those who would relish making you look foolish. Then there are those whose business it is to peddle the wares of their masters to the people that hand out the big bucks in Congress. The lobbyists. They come in all shapes and forms, from the large industrialist to the environmentalist. Everyone has his or her hands out for the public coffers. These ‘salesmen’ approach every Congressman and Senator at least once a week where millions are considered petty cash. I was no exception. So to have an appointment with these agents of capitalism was not an unusual thing. “Your ten o’clock is here to see you,” said my executive assistant, slash, secretary, Susan over the intercom.
