When should I apply?You can apply as soon as you are enrolled in the courses and at the grade level you require for admission. For instance, for a program where Grade 12 is an admission requirement, you may apply in September of your Grade 12 year. Most programs are first qualified, first admitted.

How do I apply?

Online = By mail = In person = $50 $75 $75

Applicants who apply online can pay the application fee by Visa, MasterCard or Interac Online. You may apply for more than one program, but you must submit a separate application form and pay the application fee for each program or program site you apply to.

What else do I need to do?Along with your completed application form and application fee, you will need to include:

• An official transcript of your high-school marks. If you have already completed the high-school requirements for admission, arrange for an official transcript to be forwarded electronically to us by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education or from the appropriate provincial ministry of education if your requirements were completed outside of Saskatchewan; OR

• A preliminary statement of high-school standing. If you are currently completing high-school requirements for admission, a conditional admission can be granted based on preliminary results – just complete the preliminary statement of high-school standing on the application form. Upon completion of the requirements, you must arrange for a final official transcript to be sent electronically by the appropriate provincial ministry of education. Final official transcripts are required by August 1.

• All other (if any) documents required by the program. • High-demand programs have selection criteria in

addition to regular academic admission requirements. All admission requirements are listed on our program web pages at goSIAST.com.

What happens next?After you are accepted into your program, you will receive an acceptance letter from SIAST letting you know your start date, tuition fees and other costs (such as books, supplies and students’ association fees). If you are a sponsored student, your sponsoring agency will need to provide us with written confirmation of your sponsorship.

In your acceptance letter, we will ask you to pay a $500 tuition deposit within 30 days to hold your spot in the program, so plan that cost into your budget when you apply.

If you are not offered a seat in the program to which you apply, you will be required to reapply to the next year’s intake.

Financial assistanceFull-time students may receive financial assistance under the Canada and Saskatchewan Student Loans programs, including the Saskatchewan Advantage Scholarship for new Grade 12 graduates. Part-time students may receive assistance under the Canada Student Loans Program for Part-time Students.

What if I do not meet the admission requirements?If you do not meet admission requirements, you have several options:

• If you have been out of school for at least one year you can upgrade through a Basic Education program at SIAST (see page 41) or through your high school or regional college).

• You may qualify for special admission. Contact a SIAST counsellor at any campus for details. Special admission may include:– use of an assessment tool called ACCUPLACER that

tests math and English skills, and/or– consideration of successfully completed courses

and/or credentials. See goSIAST.com/specialadmissions for details.

• You may be able to begin your studies as a part-time, unclassified student. Unclassified students are students who are registered in a SIAST course but who are not currently admitted to a SIAST program.

Because English is the language of instruction and examination at SIAST, applicants whose first or primary language is not English will need to provide evidence of sufficient English skills to gain admission.

Ready or not?We can help. If you’re heading into a health care or technology program, prepare yourself by signing up for Math for Health Care Providers or Pre-Technology Math. Courses run mid- to late August. For more information call 1-866-goSIAST.

3. Awards & scholarshipsSIAST will give away $1.5 million in student awards each academic year.

SIAST offers student awards for every certificate and diploma program at every SIAST campus. You don’t have to be a brainiac to receive a student award. Not all student awards are based on marks — some are based on financial need or things like community or volunteer involvement. Some bursaries and scholarships are available to all SIAST students, while others are for students attending a specific campus or program, or for education equity students.

Once you’ve been accepted as a student, you can apply online for an award or scholarship between June 1 and July 15. Once you’re on campus, there are other scholarship opportunities available. Check the awards guide on the scholarships page of goSIAST.com.

2 years + 2 years = SIAST diploma + university degreeWhen Roan was starting out, he decided to take SIAST’s Computer Systems Technology (CST) program after he had heard its graduates were job-ready.

“This was definitely because of the hands-on approach that SIAST takes,” says Roan, who decided to complement his SIAST diploma with a computer science degree from university.

Agreements between SIAST and universities make it easy for SIAST grads like Roan to get credit for their SIAST training, meaning that after Roan completed his SIAST diploma, he only had two years of further courses to get his degree.

In the near future, Roan hopes to get a job as an Android application developer and he’s already making money with his first app called MP3dit, a music file tag editor. His app currently has 375,000 total installs and 106,000 active users.

SIAST welcomes international students to either learn in Saskatchewan or study SIAST programs abroad. International graduates are prepared either to begin working in their home country or in Canada with the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program, or to transfer to a university to complete their degree. SIAST places heavy emphasis on providing hands-on training, often incorporating training into workplace settings.

English language requirementThe language of instruction at SIAST is English. If your first or primary language is not English, you will need to provide evidence of your English speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. These skills are required to be successful in a SIAST program.

Food services/student loungesOn-campus food choices at SIAST include breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack options. Each campus offers food services with a variety of healthy food choices, including vegetarian and gluten-free options. Vending machines with snacks and beverages are also available.

Student lounge areas offer an opportunity for students to eat, relax, study and connect in a comfortable setting. The lounges feature free wi-fi.

Health servicesWhether you’re feeling stressed out, need treatment or support, or require specific health information, as a SIAST student you have access to a registered nurse at any of our main campuses. A nurse practitioner is available at the SIAST Wascana Campus. Services are confidential and available by appointment or on a walk-in basis.

You can borrow books, journals, magazines, DVD collections and electronic resources such as e-books, iPads and laptops. Online libraries let you search the online catalogue and request and renew materials, as well as view and borrow electronic media. In the library, you can access photocopiers, computers, quiet study areas and audiovisual viewing rooms. Adaptive technologies for students with disabilities are available.

Parking and transitSIAST campuses are served by public transit. Paid parking is available at all campuses for students and visitors. Parking cards are available from the SIAST Bookstores. If you live in Regina but go to school at SIAST Palliser Campus in Moose Jaw, you can purchase monthly bus passes with the Saskatchewan Transportation Company (STC).

RecreationDon’t sweat it only in the classroom—get active. SIAST offers you great ways to get moving at any of our four campus locations through athletic clubs, intramurals and other recreational activities. Get involved in fitness classes and special interest clubs or take advantage of fitness assessments and programs. Facilities and recreation offerings vary by campus.

In Aboriginal Police Preparation, you will learn about basic investigative techniques, the criminal justice system and criminal law, while getting practical training in CPR and interpersonal communications. You will also explore the important issues – addictions, family violence, suicide intervention and more.

Correctional Studies is a diploma program that prepares you for a career with correctional institutions and justice agencies. This well-rounded program provides a strong foundation in both federal and provincial corrections. You’ll learn to manage conflict, aggression and violence; apply security skills; and better understand the role of community corrections, youth justice initiatives and restorative justice.

Indigenous Peacekeeping and Victim Services Coordination are designed in consultation with communities around the province. Indigenous Peacekeeping will prepare you for work in community law enforcement or community justice in First Nations communities. Apprenticeship training is a multi-year earning-while-learning arrangement. Apprentices already have jobs in their desired field of work, and have signed a contract of apprenticeship with their employer and the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission (SATCC). Under the supervision of a certified journeyperson, an apprentice receives knowledge and develops skills through on-the-job training. The skills apprentices learn while working are supplemented with a required number of weeks of in-school technical training each year. Upon successfully completing an apprenticeship program, apprentices are eligible to write an examination to become a certified journeyperson in their trade. SIAST provides the in-school portion of apprenticeship training for 20 apprenticeable trades.

All apprenticeship training is scheduled by SATCC.

BASIC EDUCATIONWhen you want more control over your life, your job prospects and your earning potential, start with SIAST’s Basic Education (BE) programs. SIAST’s BE programs help students who want to develop academic and job-readiness skills (as required by the labour market) and gain the academic prerequisites required for further education and training.

We have the widest range of BE programs in the province – and all provide a supportive adult learning environment. You have access to student counsellors, tutors and a full range of student services. After successfully completing your BE program, you can consider laddering into one of SIAST’s post-secondary programs.

Basic Education programs focus on helping students who want to:• develop academic and job-readiness skills• gain the academic prerequisites needed for further

education and training

To qualify for admission, you must be either:• 18 years of age and out of school for

at least one year, OR• 19 years of age or older

Because Basic Education academic programs are secondary school programs, they do not qualify for the student loan program in Saskatchewan. However, you may qualify for the Provincial Training Allowance, which is paid monthly to qualified students who attend daytime classes. Programs are available on a full- and/or part-time basis.

Adult 10The Adult 10 program builds basic academic skills and encourages the development of employment readiness, as well as living and social skills. These skills enable you to meet the demands of the labour market and pursue further training.

Studies include:• math • computer literacy• reading • writing• science • social studies

You will also complete a career exploration class that looks at employment skills and career options. The program starts at various times throughout the year.

Adult 12The Adult 12 program provides the skills and entrance qualifications you need to enrol in post-secondary institutions and succeed in the labour market. Adult 12 standing is recognized by the Ministry of Education as equivalent to the Saskatchewan 24-credit high-school Grade 12. Adult 12 offers Saskatchewan 30-level curricula.

Adult 12 standing is awarded after successful completion of the seven required 30-level credits or equivalent, including prior learning credit.

English language trainingFull-time language training is available at SIAST Kelsey Campus in Saskatoon and SIAST Wascana Campus in Regina, and on a part-time basis at all four campuses. English language testing services for IELTS, CELPIP, CLBA and ESL test preparatory programs are available. These programs are designed for students who wish to improve their English language skills for either personal development, admission to post-secondary studies or improving employment opportunities.

5 TIPS FOR STUDENT SUCCESS1. Get organized. Track your assignments, homework and

readings by using a day-planner, an electronic calendar or an app. Figure out a system that works for you.

2. Be efficient. I pack all the books I need to take home before going to my last class of the day. After that class, I am out the door and headed for home.

3. Save time and money. Consider PLAR (see page 6). I was able to PLAR keyboarding and recovered a portion of my tuition cost, and gained two free study periods a week.

4. Get help. If you feel like you are getting behind, take action right away. Ask instructors, classmates or the Learning Centre for help.

5. Figure out what works for you and your family. Going to school after being a stay-at-home mom for eight years was an adjustment for me and my family. I made a schedule that delegated chores and designated times for everyone’s homework, including my own.
