Foodshare Kerry is one of around 88 charities nationally to havesuccessfully applied for funding which will enable it to buy basicfoodstuffs which can then be redistributed to those who need it.The Fund for European Aid is designed to help people out ofpoverty through supplying them with basic goods. The scheme willstart in September and will supplement our existing supply.Foodshare has also received €5,000 from the Bons Secours Hospitaltowards the purchase of a refrigerated van. This is essential to thefurther development of the project greatly appreciated.

Foodshare Kerry collects surplus food from food producers anddistributes it to charities who deliver it to people in need. Theprimary objectives are: • To help reduce food poverty through provision of food • Reduce food waste through rescuing perfectly good food • Promote the concept of reducing food waste.

Shep Certificate in Social Awareness andCommunity Empowerment

The Strengthening Families Programme (SFP) is an evidence-based14 week family skills training programme that involves the parentsand children in three classes run on the same night once a week.Families enjoy a meal on arrival, then parents and children engagein separate skills based sessions for one hour. This is followed by afamily skills session in the second hour, where skills are practicedwith parents and children.

It is designed to allow parents and their children build new, healthyparent / child communication skills that build up positiverelationships within families.

gLoW Women’s groupGlow is a real example of community power in action. A smallgroup of local women met in An Tochar, Causeway in 2013 with aview to finding out the needs of women in the local andsurrounding areas. With the support of Kerry Education andTraining Board and NEWKD GLOW women’s group was set up andtoday they have over 120 members.

Through Glow many different activities are facilitated, fromlearning about medicinal herbs, cooking on a budget, Come Dinewith Me events, zumba, keep fit, arts & crafts, outings to thebeach, coffee mornings and evenings, walking and lots more.

The GLOW drama group, which is going from strength tostrength, met President Higgins and his wife Sabina when theywere passing through Ardfert last April.

nEWKD Sports Initiative

Members of NEWKD Sports Initiative Group who are alsomembers of Oileán Beo Castleisland receiving their medals andcerts. The group took part in eight week sessions with NEWKDvolunteers and enjoyed it so much they have started anothereight weeks!

FrEE DAY TIME Adult Education at Tralee vToSTralee VTOS was established in 1989 to help long-termunemployed to retrain or up-skill and ultimately return to work.Initially funded by the Eu, it is now funded by the DES throughSolas. There are approximately 60 learners enrolled in the variouscourses annually.

Anyone over 21 and at least 6 months on SocialWelfare payments, e.g. • JA, JB • One parent family• Disability Allowance• Signing for Credits• Dependent spouse/partner of any of the above• Widow’s/Widowers Pension • Deserted Wife Allowance• Farm AssistStatutory redundancy recipients are also eligible.
