check out Soroptimist to find that they are

good

The
surprise
was on
SICO

few of the teachers thought that they were
there for a full-on presentation to include
dancing! Of course, they were more than
grateful for the small donations. Many
thanks to members who donated more sup-
plies on their own. Principal Mrs. Masaniaiwas not able
to attend.
The campus

tatives were so
well received at
Kahuku Elemen-

surprise was onus! Susan Lau,
Angie Bugarin,Lyn Lurbe and
Jackie Pactol, were about to leave after load-
ing a cart with all the school supplies. How-
ever, the contact, Mari Lei, insisted onshowing us to the
library. As the group
neared, they were then
told that the teachers
were having a meeting
so they became quiet
so as not to interruptthe meeting. Then
were told that the
teachers wanted to
meet them and wanted to know about Sorop-
timist. Susan, Jackie and Lyn proceeded for-
ward to the u-shaped area. Susan walked
across the room, Jackie tried to follow only
to see that Lyn had stopped and Angie hung
back to take pictures. Finding herself in the

Soroptimist at BBC
On the way to Kahuku Elementary School, donations
were also dropped off at the Bobby Benson Center.
Word of mouth works very well for the projects sup-
ported by SICO and many of the items were the result of
that. School supplies were also
donated to supplement the two
programs serving these chal-
lenged youths.
Receiving the items is the Op-
erations Manager and SICOs
own Angie Bugarin, HR Direc-
tor, with staff.
Did you know, that SICO
President Rene Man-
sho, when she was on
the City Council, initi-ated the Resolution for
the Bobby Benson Cen-ter. While waiting for
Angie and staff, the
Resolution can be seenhanging in the Lobby
area. Among other
things, it references that
BBC is the first estab-
lishment to treat chemi-
cal dependency for ado-
lescents. Governor
Abercrombies signa-
ture also appears.
SICOs Roster is GROWING
SICO has another new member. Although not new to So-
roptimist, Linda Ah Hee, who lives in Mililani, is a transfer
member from SI Waikiki Foundation, Inc. Having recently
joined Soroptimist, she finds that it is easier for her to attend
meetings and be able to participate closer to home.
WELCOME LINDA

Another Championship TEAMRene Tokunaga has been literally following her son as
his Little League Seniors team traveled to Hilo, Califor-
nia and Bangor, Maine. They won the State tournamentthen went on to Maine for the national championshiptournament. SICO members have also been following the
team through emails. Rene says, Sorry to say that the
team lost to Pennsylvania today in the semifinals so they
will not be in the championship game tomorrow. The
boys did great overall and we are all very proud of them.Especially, we've heard throughout our trip both in Cali-
fornia and Maine, that our team plays with class and is
very respectful. Other teams were even cheering for our
team. They showed so much Aloha. Before each game
our players presented a kukui nut lei to each player,
coach and umpire. We saw the other teams wearing theleis everyday throughout the trip and other people were
asking how they could get one. The team represented Ha-
waii well.
Congratulations to the Pearl City Little League Seniors
team for a job well done!
Violet Richardson Awardee
Pomai returns
Fresh off her shift at Pali Momi Hospi-
tal, Pomai Nakoa, Violet Richardson
Awardee, joined us for dinner and an up-
date of her travels and project in Vietnam.
You may recall that her project is teach-
ing English to elementary school studentsand college bound students. Her day consisted of prepar-
ing a daily curriculum and this year she took a Hawaiian
legend book. She shared that she learned to make silk
lanterns and attended a water puppet show, exclusive to
Vietnam.
Her next stop was in Nepal with pharmacists where
language was a bit of a problem in how instructions
were translated.
Very thankful for her award, she will be attending
Occidental College in California. She was a representa-
tive of the Pacific Asian Affairs Council, Glocal
Literacy Foundation.
Leonas Great AdventureLeona had a great adventure on a whitewater raft ride in
Oregon. She and hubby Ed had gone to watch granddaugh-
ter Mikayla participate in the Lake Oswego Nike Soccer
Tournament. One side trip was the whitewater rafting.
She reports that the team and Coach Ward really enjoyed
themselves. By the way one of the gals did fly out of our
boat, Ed almost went over but his other leg kept him in the
boat and Andy, the other guy fell in the middle of the boatand on mewasnt so bad, I just hung on to the boat and
road the waveswe need to do this! She can now tick it
off her bucket list! Everyone was safe.
Mikayla, age 15, was asked to participate in team Nakoa
Riggers with 17 year olds. In the final game, she scored the
winning goal for the Tournament Championship. Proud
Grandma, Grandpa and Coach Ward, (Dad) were so ex-
cited.
The excitement begins! Leona

OH NO! There goes Ed!
More School Supplies Donated
Upon hearing that SICO was donating school supplies
to the Kahuku Elementary School, an overheard remark
prompted another donation of school supplies for Hale o
Hooulu a me Mauliola. On the north shore in Kahuku
is an upcoming program sponsored by the Bobby Ben-
son Center and the Office of Youth Services. Hale o
Hooulu a me Mauliola provides a day program for
young people dealing with substance abuse. Their name
translates to House of Healing and Growth. Although,SICOs budget was almost depleted, a fair amount of
goods were delivered and graciously accepted.

Please have your guests reply to you and then forward
your list to Chairs Ellen Kazama or Rene Mansho.
Prepare to relax in this serene lush garden. For the self-
guided tour, there are easy paths for walking and taking in
the views of magnificent old trees and many different kinds
of flowers.
For those unfamiliar with Wahiawa, the Garden is located
on California Avenue, Wahiawas main street. Take a right
turn from Kamehameha Highway and travel a good mile.
Youll find the parking lot next to the Garden on the left.
Some of you might know that our very own PresidentRene was instrumental in getting the facility for the Garden when
she was on the Honolulu City Council.
Come join the fun as only SICO members can do. Bring poten-
tial members who want to improve the lives of women and girls in
our communities and around the world and to live their dream.

ONE NIGHT IN ROME
After many planning sessions and a lot of brain busting workTHEevent was finally upon us. The Committee Chair
Lyn Lurbe did a great job along with members Jane Murakami and Lorraine Fukumae. This 11th Annual fundraiser is
the culmination of the three Oahu clubs. All members did an outstanding job. Its still too early for the final tabulation.
However, SICO members exceeded ticket sales and all but two items in the Silent Auction were sold.
