SIDESTEP YOUR MARKER LIKE INIESTAFind yourself getting caught in possession? Not after this dribbling drill. Speed up your thought process and glide away from opponents a la Iniesta by practising this bit of skill

SET UP

Set out a 12 x 12 yard area. Position a defender in the middle of the square. Place three attackers, with a ball each, around the perimeter of the square, leaving one side free.

ACTION

On the coach’s command, A1 dribbles at the defender in the middle. A1

feints to go left, but carries the ball to the right, dribbling to the side of the square that’s unoccupied. The

defender applies passive pressure, but they do not make a tackle.

As soon as A1 has finished, A2 goes, followed by A3. Change the defender in the middle every 45 seconds.

HOW IT HELPS

This drill embodies the old adage: practice makes perfect. By practising a feint over and over again it will become instinctive when you need to use it in a game. When you see Andres Iniesta sidestep a defender it looks effortless, and that’s because it is – he’s in cruise control.
