Issue: Q4/2010 (Jul-Sep) Siemens Ki Dunya

September 30th brought our 2009-10 fiscal year to an end. It has been said a company is only as good as the people who represent it. The management wants to thank each and every one of you for your contribution. It is your dedication to excellence that makes our brand image shine a little brighter in the marketplace.

Now it’s time to look forward. The New Year is a time for excitement and optimism. We have to be more focused and find new ways and means and better opportunities for our growth and profitability. Like previous years, this year again won’t be a cake walk. We will have to face more competitors and a tougher market.

The ability to reach our potential and overcome challenges lies within each of us. We must therefore maintain a positive attitude that allows us to celebrate each win as a victory and each set-back as an opportunity to learn and develop. We must accept personal responsibility for our daily actions and recognize that each one of us is either part of the problem or part of the solution; and that ultimately the choice is ours. Please remember the number

526,600. At the beginning of the new year, each one of us is given the same precious gift - 525,600 minutes. No one receives more, no one receives less. It is the one great common denominator for us all. How each of us invests those minutes will provide the answers to our growth.

The best people in business have learned how to take full advantage of each minute. They lead - and live - with a positive attitude, hold themselves accountable for top-notch results, and continually work to get a little better every single day. They shore up their weaknesses, lead by example and understand that they must live in the present to make the most of everything they do. It’s all about you! The only person who controls what you do and what you think is you. Yes, we have a lot of opportunities this year. Yes, there will also be obstacles along our way, but in the end, the measure of our success will be a direct reflection of how you use your minutes and how much of yourself you’re willing to invest. Our success rests in your hands and TEAMWORK!!

Disastrous Floods in Pakistan evoke sympathy and support from Siemens worldwide, Euro 2.5 m contributed so far

As the mighty river Indus flexed its muscles spreading to over 30% of the land area of Pakistan destroying whatever came its way the global Siemens family rose to the challenge organizing fund collection drives and donating cash and equipment for the flood affected people of Pakistan.

Communications department at Siemens Pakistan was flooded by calls and e mails from colleagues across the world wanting to know how they could help the country in its hour of crisis. Within the first few days Siemens AG had already donated Euro 1 million to the German Red Cross to set up mobile clinics in the affected areas and Siemens Pakistan had established a flood relief committee with top officials from all concerned departments to spearhead relief efforts by the company. A camp was set up at the sprawling Siemens Industrial complex to collect relief goods and a special bank account was created where employees could deposit cash donations. The company announced that it will match every donation with equal amount. Since Siemens Pakistan is in

cluster Middle East our cluster colleagues also outdid each other to collect funds for the flood victims coordinated by cluster communications the donations came from nearly every country in the cluster.

Relief WorkIn the first phase of relief work food hampers, bottled water, juices, and tarpaulins worth approx Rs.7 million were handed over to Pakistan Army in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad for distribution in flood affected areas. Pakistan Army was the logical partner for these activities as they have the reach through helicopters, boats etc to the remotest corners of the affected areas and they also have the man power and discipline to carry out these activities in a sustainable manner.

A truck load of such goods was also handed over to SITE association, the representative body of the Industrial Estate in which Siemens Industrial complex is located. After thorough discussion, it was decided to set up a “Siemens Tent Village” for 100 families. Again we contacted Pak Army who pointed out to us a suitable location in Sehwan Sharif in Sindh. A list was provided to us for the basic necessities of 500 people including utensils and medicines for a medical camp that will cater to the medical needs of these 500 men, women and children. It took a few days, but everything was in place finally and two truck loads were handed over to Pak army for setting up this camp in Sehwan Sharif.

Rehabilitation WorkAs the Indus river meets the Arabian Sea water is now receding and people are returning back to their devastated lands. Siemens flood relief efforts have also switched gears and we are now preparing for the rehabilitation phase of relief work. Siemens main concern has always been

sustainability and what better way to sustain society than by enhancing its knowledge level through investment in education. Siemens has teamed up with an internationally renowned NGO Citizen Fo u n d a t i o n , h t tp : / / w w w. th ec i t i ze n s foundation.org/ to help rebuild the schools washed away in floods. Negotiations are underway not only to rebuild schools but also install water purification plant in these schools to supply drinking water not only to the children but the surrounding community as well.

A Global ResponseThe global response to floods in Pakistan has demonstrated the close knit nature of our Siemens global family. Recently the donation campaign ended in Germany

with an astounding amount of Euro 2.2 million including matching by the company. This is in addition to the Euro 1 million already given to German Red Cross. The same enthusiasm has been the hallmark of this campaign globally with countries like Canada, Sweden and others

contributing for flood relief in Pakistan.

The spirit of this endeavor can be gauged from the fact that Mr.Nauman Gul Business Development Manager Siemens Qatar called to offer his vacation time in Pakistan to flood relief activities. He on his own motivated employees in Qatar and through donations has been sending relief supplies to Pakistan. Siemens Pakistan former Managing Director Mr.Sulger donated ten thousand Euro for the flood victims demonstrating his unbroken ties with Pakistan.Globally and locally, the reaction of Siemens employees and management has demonstrated that we believe in our slogans and we walk the talk. In this case we demonstrated our commitment to our slogan “One world, one life – we care!

KarachiAre we Green enough?

Over the coming months approximately 20 leading Asian business capitals will be compared in terms of their environmental sustainability. The Asian Green City Index is the first known attempt to analyse and compare the environmental performance of Asian cities and their efforts to improve sustainability. Publication of the study is planned for the end of 2010. Siemens and the Economist Intelligence Unit, an independent and objective research partner are to rank the greenest cities in Asia. The intent of this index is to build on developing an analysis that focuses uniquely on the environmental challenges and success stories of Asian cities. The ranking will cover cities from 11 Asian countries - China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam. Pakistan is to be represented by its Mega City Karachi The final selection of cities will be based on data availability.

“With the Asian Green City Index, the Economist Intelligence Unit and Siemens are covering new ground. So far, no other study of this scope has been done for Asia,” said Stefan Denig, who is leading this project at Siemens. The study will be part of the Green City Index series, which sets out to compare the environmental performance of cities in different regions of the world. Following the success of the European Green City Index, a study comparing the environmental performance of 30 major cities from 30 European countries, Siemens is now sponsoring similar studies for Asia, Africa and Latin America. Siemens intends to build on developing an analysis that focuses uniquely on the environmental challenges and success stories of Asian cities.

“The results of the study will help the cities to better understand and tackle their specific environmental challenges,” said Mr.Sohail Wajahat Siddiqui CEO & MD Siemens Pakistan.“It will enable city stakeholders to make more informed decisions about how to reduce their

environmental impact by for example, making their power supplies, traffic systems and buildings more energy-efficient and eco-friendly”.

The cities will be assessed in the following eight environmental categories:energy supply and CO2 emissionstransportationbuildings and land usewatersanitationwasteair quality green governanceAt the same time the study will highlight best-practice projects to enable cities to learn from one another. As an independent partner, the Economist Intelligence Unit will ensure the objectivity of the research.

Cities must take a leading role in climate protection. They are responsible for 80 percent of the world’s CO2 emissions and consume three-quarters of its energy. “Urbanization and climate change are two megatrends we can help address with our valuable and innovative solutions”, explained, Sohail Wajahat. Siemens has the world’s largest environmental portfolio of energy-efficient and climate-friendly technologies. In fiscal 2009, the company generated about €23 billion in revenue from products and solutions in its environmental portfolio - approximately 30 percent of the company’s total annual revenue.

The Green City Index Europe was a huge success in naming Copenhagen as the greenest city in Europe in 2009. The index aimed to give statistics to analyze the achievements and objectives in the areas of environmental and climate protection. Through the Green City Index, not only cities were ranked according to their environmental position in Europe; the index gave substantial basis for cities to work and recover from the less eco-friendly aspects of their environmental performance.

U.S. President Obama visits Siemens AG:

Historic Year for Siemens. President of USA & Premier of China visit Siemens Factories and CEO Peter Loscher calls on Nelson Mandela

For the first time in the company’s 163-year history, a U.S. president has visited a Siemens factory. On Tuesday, during his tour of the Midwest, Barack Obama made a stop at the plant manufacturing components for wind power generation in Fort Madison in the U.S. state of Iowa. The plant, which was opened in mid-2007 and has recently been expanded, has a workforce of 600 employees and produces rotor blades for wind turbines.

“Siemens has been represented in America for over 100 years and is with a workforce of 64,000 one of the largest international employers in the U.S. In the last ten years alone we have invested around €20 billion in the country. In our

plant in Fort Madison we are promoting the green technology revolution,” Peter Löscher, President and CEO of Siemens, explained to the President of the United States. Barack Obama highlighted the Fort Madison plant as a successful example of how clean technology can help revive a local economy.

The visit is reckoned as a historic feature for Siemens as Siemens and the USA government are partners in leading the country into a clean energy future. CEO Peter Loscher said: “That makes us proud and encourages us to continue our path as a green infrastructure giant with absolute determination”.

Peter Löscher showed himself to be deeply moved after his meeting with Nelson Mandela, the former president of South Africa: „In spite of his great age, Madiba is still surrounded by his campaigning aura. To meet him was a great honor.“

To his great surprise, Peter Löscher had the opportunity to meet the Nobel Peace Prize laureate Nelson Mandela and his grandson Zwelivelile Mandela during his visit to attend the celebrations in South Africa. „The meeting was very short, but intense,“ commented the head of Siemens. That this meeting should produce another partner in the social development of South Africa had not been on the CEO‘s itinerary. The spontaneous partnership for the educational projects that the family of the first black president is promoting was sealed with a historic handshake. The result is a sum of 50,000 euros for building a school in Mvezo, Nelson Mandela‘s home town.

„The education of young people is a matter of great importance to us. They are our future,“ Peter Löscher emphasized. The plan is for

Siemens experts to support this project from its planning phase to its technical implementation, and to contribute their know-how in the areas of building services engineering, lighting, and power supply. Siemens employees are being invited to take part in building the school by volunteering their services. The birthplace of Nelson Mandela is in a region of South Africa where there is a lack of infrastructure, where there are insufficient schools, and where there is no comprehensive system of healthcare. The project for building the new secondary school, along with other infrastructure projects for the area, has already been presented to the public by the Mandela family and representatives of the South African government.

In the next two years, Siemens will be investing 200 million euros in developing activities on the African continent. „In this way, we intend to develop our local partnerships still further – including in social projects. Our cooperation with the Mvezo Development Trust is an important step in this direction,“ the CEO emphasized.

Classroom and work experience are two completely different domains. When I entered the world of Siemens, it felt like I stepped into the real world of industrial production. From the very first moment, I was very impressed with the environment and the people. I was introduced to the GM, Mr. Arslan who briefed me about Siemens and what I am expected to learn throughout my experience as an intern. I found in him a great inspiration. The real business started when I got the opportunity to explore and learn about Motors and Alternators production. I got to see all the procedures. My seniors Mr. Sohail and Mr. Nadeem provided me with a clear understanding of the technicalities behind winding jobs. I learned miniscule details like the number of turns and thickness of copper which has to be used. I got the chance to practice this way and it was an exuberant feeling. I got to see every part of motor production and assembling like cutting, framing and notching of stators and rotors, the windings, shaft drilling and interlocking, assembly and housing. I was moved to MA testing. Here I was taught the entire planning procedure and certain intricate details regarding SAP. I learned that Siemens arranges SAP training for its employees. Under the supervision of Mr.Abu Talib, Mr.Ali and Ms. Hiba I was moved to I DT design. Here I got experience of managing a

Mansoor concluded his talk on the evolving business specializations such as Supply Chain Management,

proper filing system and learning how to categorize. I also learnt the design procedure, generator sets and their technicalities. Further in my rotation, I was introduced to GS production and GS Testing. Under Mr. Nadeem and Mr. Irfan, I was explained different procedures behind production and testing of generators. Thereon, I learned about receiving, processing and final inspections in the Quality Care Unit. QC, I learnt is the key for the survival of Siemens’ products in the market ensuring that no defective pieces are traded in the market. This internship was an amazing journey for me. Apart from learning the different processes of different departments, I learnt to drive a lifter. The HR department organized an industrial visit for us which enabled us to visits departments like Switch boards and Transformers in which we did not get the opportunity of working. I feel honored to have worked and learned under the great supervision of the staff at Siemens during my time here as an intern and given the opportunity, I would be ecstatic to be employed by such an esteemed organization.

Hospitality (Tourism / Hospitals), Media Planning, Banking & Finance, Industrial Relations and General Management. The congress theme for this year was “HUM DUNYA BADLAINGAY”. It’s not just a phrase; it is the inspiration to bring a very positive change in our youth and within our society. This congress discussed various social issues through workshops, sessions on communication, leadership and self esteem skills. Mansoor Soomro was also a panelist for a panel discussion on ‘Career Counseling’.

If you love to paint, you should be a painter, said Mansoor talking about professions and passions. Mr.E.A.Bhatti passed away peacefully in July this year.He would always send us away on our trips with a broad smile on

his face but we could just bid him farewell with our tears.Everyone remembers the invaluable services he rendered to the company in the field of travel. He was associated with Siemens travel department for more than 35 long years and after retirement joined Oasis travel agency and continued to help Siemens employees with their travel needs. He had remarkable qualities and sometimes when everyone had given hope of getting a visa or ticket in an emergency he would produce one almost as if by magic.

The thing everyone remembers most about him is his infectious smile even in the most pressing of moments. He was undoubtedy the master of travel arrangements and the respect he commanded from nearly every top executive of the company bears testimony to his unmatched art of travel arrangements. He was so well respected that Mr. Haleem Khan our former Company secretary on hearing of his demise made a special request to ensure that his services were recognised in this issue of SKD.

Just like Mr.Khan everyone felt that they owed a last tribute to Mr.Bhatti. Surely there will be many more trips, tickets and visas but there won‘t be that touch of Bhatti that we had all come to admire and respect. au revoir Mr.Bhatti we will all miss you and pray for you that your dedicated services and hard work bear fruit in the

Ever wondered about the mechanism behind the power lines you see almost everywhere providing us with and controlling the flow of electricity? Are these power lines actually controlled? What will happen if a transmission line is broken or the current in that power line is abnormally high? There will be a black out, yes and the abnormal flow of current may result in burning the appliance connected to that power line. There must be a proper automation system that monitors and controls these power lines and constantly supervise what is really happening inside these lines.

The Energy Automation department of Siemens Pakistan Engineering provides this automation solution to the power lines. One way of ensuring a constant and healthy supply is to equip these lines with an appropriate protection system. This protection system is responsible for measuring the current, voltage, frequency and other parameters that flows through these lines and rectify the problem as soon as it arises. For example if the voltage in a certain line is below the specified range or the current in a lines increases the particular limit, then protection device must generate tripping and send this issue to the controller so that the problem can be rectified then and there.

One major problem that arises while providing the protection solution to these lines is of the communication of different protection devices that belong to different manufacturers. Since devices of diverse make have their own communication protocol, there is a need of protocol converter every time you want to communicate with a device of a different make. IEC 61850 is a standard that eradicate this problem all together. Now you can easily communicate with devices of different make on a single platform without the need of anyprotocol converter.

Fortunately Siemens is the first manufacturer in the market to make devices that follow IEC 61850 standard. We, in Energy Automation of Siemens Pakistan provide a range of substation automation and SCADA solutions in which we can integrate diverse devices on a single platform. In addition to it, IEC 61850 has many other advantages which can summarized as below: 1. It saves time as well as money: Time, because we do not need any cumbersome wiring that was required in the conventional systems. It also saves money because you don’t need to buy protocol converters. 2. Greater Security: There is a single communication channel for all the data which makes the system secure and safe. 3. Diversity: Since IEC 61850 is an internationally accepted standard, so you canselect the devices that you really want. 4. Speed: The operating time of the devices on this platform is much faster than the conventional system. This aspect is really feasible in Load Management Systems where time is quite crucial. Last but not the least, we should never forget

that only those who implement the latestcommunication standards accomplishes the full potential for an efficient operational management.

The Energy Sector of Siemens Pakistan participated in the 4th Power and Alternative Energy Asia 2010 International Exhibition and Conference held in Karachi at the Expo Centre from 27-29 March 2010. This occasion was also graced by the presence of Ms. Nusha Suzanne Heit, CFO Siemens Wind Power for the Asia Pacific Region. Siemens Pakistan put up a very prominent stall in the Exhibition showing its local products for the Electrical Balance of Plant for the Wind Power Projects and videos of its world wide business in the field of Renewable Energies.

As one of the world’s only energy infrastructure companies with proven know-how and expertise throughout the entire energy conversion chain, Siemens is much more than a wind turbine supplier. Siemens customers benefit from products, solutions, and services that have evolved from more than 150 years of technology leadership in power generation, transmission, and distribution, and from unparalleled project management skills based on three decades of global experience in onshore wind projects.

A steady growth of onshore wind power projects world-wide is predicted to meet the increasing electricity demand of countries like Pakistan which are abundantly blessed with the resource” Wind”. Thanks to technical innovation, the generating capacity of onshore wind power plants can now be considered to be at par with many conventional power plants. Furthermore, efficiency improvements in turbine and generator design have made onshore wind power a viable option even for regions with moderate mid-wind conditions. This includes primarily the Siemens 2.3-MW wind turbines with a rotor diameter of 101 meters to meet the requirements of IEC Class II wind regime of our Gharo Wind Corridor. Designed to comply with major grid codes, Siemens onshore wind power solutions are widely known for their

outstanding availability and durability thus paving the way for a cleaner and greener future of power generation. The full power converter, a standard supply with Siemens Wind Turbines provides the required grid support – a must for utility networks in Pakistan.

A presentation was also made in the Conference on a very current topic of “Grid Interconnection Solutions for Wind Power Projects in Pakistan” by Mr. Irfan Ahmad BU Head of Renewable Energies and

Services, Siemens Pakistan.

This presentation hi-lighted the role of Siemens state of the art WTG technology in “grid support” as a solution to the problems being faced due to the weak local distribution networks in Gharo and Jhimpir area where the WPPS are being set up. This technical presentation was very well received by various stake holders including investors and project developers present in the Conference.

During the 3 day Exhibition on Renewable Energy Products and Services, a large number of the visitors also showed great interest in Siemens solutions in the field of Thermal (CSP) and Photovoltaic Solar. Solar power is now becoming a key driver in the market for renewable energy. The rapid development of solar energy technology has made solar power a proven alternative to conventional energy systems in recent years, and the market is quickly growing. Siemens’ unique expertise and experience throughout the entire energy conversion chain helps take advantage of the full potential of these technologies and make the most of an investment in solar power.Siemens is focusing on the two established technologies for the utilization of solar energy:

State of the art turnkey solutions for large-scale photovoltaic (PV) plants

Tailor made products and solutions for concentrating solar power (CSP) plants, including solar fields, power blocks, and critical solar power plant components

Siemens‘ PV and CSP solutions are designed to match customers‘ individual requirements and the intensity level of solar radiation at a given location, ensuring a clean, sustainable, and affordable supply of solar power. As an experienced partner in the solar and turnkey business, Siemens can offer a reliable foundation to get projects up and running in a timely manner. There are many benefits that make Siemens the preferred partner for large-scale PV projects. Siemens Pakistan is supporting the renewable energy program in the Country both in wind as well as solar solutions.

NTC and Siemens Pakistan have entered into a technology agreement according to which SAP would be licensing its ERP software solution at NTC. The solution will be implemented at NTC through Siemens Pakistan, which is one of SAP’s top implementation partners in Pakistan.

A 13 year old boy who lives in a small village of Pakistan waits for his turn in a long queue that has gathered at one tap, armed with empty plastic bottles, in a desperate attempt to ensure that at least a gallon or two of water may be available for daily needs. Water, a blessing that most of us take for granted is one of the most valuable assets of the human civilization. Ironically, even though water covers approximately 70% of our planet, numerous countries now have clean water shortages that threaten the health of their citizens and economies. Most of these pressures are being felt by emerging market nations like Pakistan. Siemens Water Technologies (SWT) believes that access to clean drinking water is not a privilege but a ‘Basic Human Right’. SWT has been working for years to provide municipal as well as industrial water solutions to its customers, making certain that technology combined with hard work and sincerity reap fruitful results.

Engineers from Siemens Pakistan - Cross Industries have designed and developed Reverse Osmosis Treatment Plants taking into consideration the local and international requirements and standards. After a nearly ten-year development phase, Siemens has entered the market with its new generation of extremely energy-efficient gas turbines, the so-called H-Class. A leading U.S. utility is the first commercial customer. Starting in 2013, no fewer than six of the “world-record turbines,” which will cut fossil fuel consumption in combined-cycle power plants by a third, will be in operation in the Sunshine State of Florida. By upgrading its power plants, the customer Florida Power & Light will achieve net savings of nearly $1 billion over the turbines’ entire lifecycle. “The H-Class is a masterpiece of engineering and a model of energy efficiency. We’re the first to the market. With this top-class Siemens product, we’re now helping U.S. electric companies achieve the energy transformation being driven by President Barack Obama. We’ll now be moving into other regional markets,” said Siemens President and CEO Peter Löscher.

Siemens Energy is to install two turnkey HVDC (high voltage direct current) back-to-back links in Georgia to connect the Georgian power supply network with the grid system in Turkey. As part of the Black Sea Transmission Network Project, one of the most significant infrastructure projects in Georgia, the two HVDC back-to-back links are each to transmit 350 megawatts (MW) of controlled electric power generated in various hydropower plants in Georgia to Turkey.

“With our HVDC technology we’re creating an energy bridge for the transmission of eco-friendly electric power between Georgia and Turkey, which will help to meet Turkey’s growing power demand,” said Udo Niehage, CEO of the Power Transmission Division of Siemens Energy. The Siemens HVDC back-to-back links will not only connect the two power supply networks but will also enable control of the flow of electric power on the energy bridge to Turkey. The HVDC technology with its fast control function will also contribute toward stabilization of the connected grids, which is a major advantage in the event of system disturbances and blackouts.

Siemens has received an order from Slovakia Steel Mills, a.s (SSM) in Strážské, Slovakia, to supply a water treatment plant for its new steelworks. The plant will treat the water used for direct and indirect cooling and is scheduled to come on stream by the end of 2010. The order is worth some ten million euros.

The mini mill of Slovakia Steel Mills in Strážské is designed to produce around 600,000 tonnes of structural steel per year. It incorporates the complete process chain consisting of an electric arc furnace, ladle metallurgy facility, a three-strand continuous casting plant and a rolling mill.

Steel production requires large quantities of treated water for direct and indirect cooling, so the central Siemens treatment plant has to supply some 7,000 cubic meters of treated water every hour. The technical equipment includes cooling towers, pumping stations, pressure sand filters, metering stations and sludge treatment facilities.

The entire water treatment plant is automated by Simatic type S7 300 programmable logic controllers. Visualization is provided by a WinCC HMI system. Siemens is also supplying the process instrumentation equipment for monitoring the water quality. This includes instruments to measure flow rates, pressures, temperatures and levels.

All the pump drives are equipped with frequency converters, enabling the pumps to be run according to demand and thus saving energy.

A major soft drink manufacturer has selected Siemens to provide a total water management solution for a new bottling plant in Malaysia. This multi-million dollar project includes water and wastewater treatment equipment and a two-year operation and maintenance service agreement. The solution from Siemens offers the lowest total cost of ownership while allowing greater operating flexibility, and environmental benefits such as energy, water and chemical savings. The plant is scheduled to be commissioned in November 2010.

The environmentally friendly 150 m3/h process water treatment system uses the concept of the Siemens S3 process (S3: Sanitize/Start/Stop), coupled with a modular reverse osmosis (RO) system. The S3 process reduces the amount of energy and water consumed and wastewater generated, by shutting down the water treatment system during periods of non use. The S3 process also extends membrane life, further reducing operational costs.

The heart of the wastewater system is an Omniflo SBR system (Sequencing Batch Reactor) for biological treatment to reduce Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD).

The SBR system has a provision to include a nutrient removal process step to meet future stringent wastewater-discharge regulations in Malaysia. The modular system has been designed to increase future biological treatment capacity, if required.

The “on-demand” design of the SBR system allows the jet aeration to be used only when needed for the particular batch of wastewater generated, thus significantly reducing operating costs. The system is designed to require very low maintenance, as the life span of the jet aerator is often greater than 20 years and there are no electromechanical moving parts under water.

Siemens Energy and the utility China Southern Power Grid have put into operation the second pole of the world-record HVDC system, which is capable of transporting huge amounts of clean hydro power to Guangdong Province. The transmission capacity has now been doubled to 5000 megawatts (MW). With one pole operating at plus 800 kilovolts (kV) and the other at minus 800 kV, the voltage difference between the poles reaches the world record of 1600 kV DC. In December 2009, the link had also set the world record for first DC operation ever at a voltage level of 800 kV DC. Since that date, Pole 1 has operated at nominal power of 2500 MW without any interruptions.

New Voice Alarm for Speedy Evacuation

Comprehensive diagnosis for early detection of breast cancer

The use of emergency announcements in the event of fire can help accelerate the evacuation of buildings. At the Security 2010 trade fair in Essen, Germany, (October 5–8), Siemens will be presenting evacuation solutions based on voice messaging technology. Instead of a siren, voice messages are used to give warnings and instructions. As studies show, this accelerates the evacuation process, since people react up to the spoken word up to four times more quickly than to alarm signals.

The E100 from Siemens converts the signals from an existing alarm system into appropriate voice messages based on a preestablished evacuation plan. If the fire spreads, the system can modify instructions accordingly, close off certain escape routes, or initiate evacuation of other parts of the building. The E100 also controls the emergency lighting and marking of escape routes. Using a multichannel system, different announcements can be made in different parts of the building. The E100 also incorporates a microphone function for live messages — for use by the fire services, for example — and loudspeakers in corridors and working rooms. Developed by Siemens USA, the Syngal solution — a further component for voice-based alarm systems — utilizes existing communications infrastructure such as computer networks, telephone systems, or electronic display boards. Syngal functions on three levels: in buildings, outdoors — where it utilizes electronic billboards, emergency pillars, or loudspeakers — and on the personal level.

The latter approach is based on the proposition that the best way to contact an increasingly mobile population is to transmit warnings directly to cell phones. Mass messaging solutions have been established in the U.S. for quite some time, and advances in standardization are now easing their spread in Europe. The E100 from Siemens already meets the upcoming European standard governing voice alarm systems, which will enter into force in 2011

Healthcare

The Ministry of Health of the Spanish region of Murcia has placed an order worth 132 million Euros to Siemens Healthcare for medical technology, service and financing. Within the framework of a public private partnership, Siemens will provide two hospitals in the region with more than 100 imaging systems, including computed tomography scanners, mammography systems, and ultrasound systems. Siemens ensures that the hospitals work with state-of-the-art technology for the next 15 years. This includes both maintenance and an innovation guarantee: The systems will be replaced in predefined intervals with the newest model of the respective product line. Siemens Financial Services developed the financing solution for the initial equipment and for the regular technological replacements.

Siemens wins 132-million-Euro contract for medical technology in Spain

In a continual commitment to patient care and radiation reduction in computed tomography (CT), Siemens Healthcare has launched SIERRA (Siemens Radiation Reduction Alliance) and has established an

expert panel to advance the cause of dose reduction in CT.

The new Low Dose Expert Panel includes 15 specialists in radiology, cardiology and physics, who are internationally recognized for their publications on the subject of CT dose. The panel’s objective is to generate proposals for how manufacturers may continue to develop their technology and to help users better adapt their procedures in order to bring about further dose reduction in CT.

One of the most important suggestions from the first meeting of the Low Dose Expert Panel in May concerns methods to increase utilization in clinical practice of the many CT dose reduction technologies that are already available.

The refurbishment of medical technology devices in Forchheim, Germany, follows a comprehensive, five-stage quality process (device selection, qualified disassembly, refurbishment process, installation, warranty against defects) with the same high standards as for new devices. The systems then leave the factory with the „Proven Excellence“ quality seal and are sold throughout the world. In accordance with the comprehensive approach of the European Commission regarding the Integrated Product Policy, Siemens takes all relevant environmental aspects into account across the entire product lifecycle.

The high-quality refurbishment of the systems takes place at the RS manufacturing center in Forchheim, which is over 4000 square meters, and follows the latest COCIR standard (Good Manufacturing Refurbishment Practice).

The employees there - especially in production, quality management, logistics, marketing, and sales - arrange the technical refurbishment and the resale throughout the world. The medical systems are being refurbished in 25 so-called berths, where every single system is going to repaired before delivery, completely assembled, and tested just like new systems.

Breast care specialists can now interpret images from various examinations of one patient at a glance. The latest version of Syngo Mammo Report, the mammography workstation from Siemens, for the first time combines tomosynthesis, 3D ultrasound and 3D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with 2D mammography.

When mammography indicates a lump in the breast, radiologists often have to use additional imaging methods to acquire a detailed diagnosis. To assess the various images from ultrasound, MRI, and mammography systems, there is usually a dedicated workstation respectively.

The latest version of the mammography workstation Syngo Mammo Report from Siemens enables radiologists to display images from different examinations simultaneously. In addition to saving time, the direct comparison of results allows for a more comprehensive diagnosis. Furthermore, Syngo Mammo Report supports 3D applications for ultrasound, mammography, and MRI. Three-dimensional imaging techniques are

becoming increasingly important in the early detection of breast cancer, particularly for patients with dense breast tissue or with a family history of breast cancer.

Syngo Mammo Report also allows users to read images from other vendors‘ imaging systems. Moreover, the workstation can be integrated into the radiology information systems of different departments, such as the breast center or the radiology department

According to Maurice Faber, Healthcare Sector Cluster Lead for the Middle East, the pushME initiative means that Healthcare can now focus on achieving sustainable business growth in the region. Here Faber talks about the key challenges that the Sector is currently facing in the Middle East, the approaches in place to tackle these challenges, the opportunities that lie ahead and how pushME is supporting the Sector.

“Our business is growing at a rate of around 30 percent per annum. One of the biggest challenges we currently have is to cope with this massive growth,” states Faber. A backlog in orders brought about by the rapid growth means that the processes and systems currently in place need to be optimised and adapted. “When we were a smaller business, we could simply call to each other across the office corridors; now we are much larger, we have to develop systems to accommodate this growth.” Current process management structures are being analysed and streamlined, enabling the focus to shift back on to customers’ needs.

Globally the Healthcare Sector is undergoing a restructure in terms of the remit of the Divisions; this should be finalised and in place by the start of the next fiscal year. In addition to this, within the Middle East Cluster there has also been some internal restructuring. For example, the six countries known as ‘Business Center Gulf’ (BCG), namely UAE, Bahrain, Oman, Yemen, Qatar and Kuwait, have been joined by four further countries, Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon and Libya, with the main office being in the UAE. Colleagues previously located in the BCG countries and also the Sector’s headquarter offices in Erlangen, Germany, have relocated to the UAE. Faber believes that this will help with the speed at which operations can function.

Another challenge is the competition. “The worldwide crisis has not affected the Middle East region as badly as other areas in the world; this means that all major companies see the Middle East as an opportunity for growth, which increases the competition” explains Faber. “We have mastered this challenge before and I don’t see any reason why we won’t master it again.” The Healthcare Sector has various strategies in place in order to address and tackle the challenges the Sector currently

faces. Faber believes the Cluster-wide company growth initiative, pushME, will help him to successfully implement these plans. He cites two main strategic elements that he wants to focus on: maintaining excellent personnel and good customer relations. Faber talks very proudly of the personnel he has in the region. He is keen to continue to develop and grow what he calls “a great team”. As business opportunities increase, the Sector will continue to focus on employee development. Training will be key as the Sector aims to maintain and increase the competency of its staff in the Cluster.

“We want to grow our team and recruit experienced people. Our focus is on first exploring talent from within Siemens in the region, as I think it is important we give the opportunities to our current employees to develop. Next we would look globally within Siemens, before then trying to attract talent from outside. Sometimes we may look at stealing from the competition!” In addition to the Siemens employees in Healthcare, Faber talks about the company’s agents: “We have long-term, reliable partners right across the region. They know what to do and when to do it. It is important that we continue to expand and strengthen this vital partner base.”

One of the main approaches of pushME, the implementation of Key Account Managers, is also being practiced in Healthcare. This means that the business is focussed on gaining a deeper understanding of customers’ requirements and future plans. This way, Siemens is positioned to support the customer in achieving their targets.Explaining what impact the implementation of pushME has had on the Healthcare sector, Faber says simply: “things are getting done”. Faber has found that the increase in attention the region is now getting from the Sector’s senior management team, as is the case with the other Sectors, has meant that as issues arise, they have been easier to escalate and reach early resolutions.

Now that these mechanisms are in place, Faber believes he can focus on exploring potential opportunities, of which there are many. Iraq is a major opportunity for the business. Securing the biggest single order to date for the Sector in the region with the Iraqi Ministry of Health means that, once the customer is satisfied, Healthcare will have a credible reference in the country, paving the way for Siemens to secure more opportunities there. Currently, in the Middle East, on average, just over two percent of GDP is spent on Healthcare; in Europe they spend around eight percent and the figure is even higher in the US. Similarly, looking at bed spaces in the region, the Middle East has, on average, just two beds per 1000 in habitants. In Europe they have three times this amount. So as countries in the region work to increase their Healthcare spend and facilities, and minimise Healthcare tourism to Europe and the US, Siemens can support them in achieving these goals. This offers huge business opportunities for Siemens.

The Sector is also working closely with the Siemens Financial Services in the Cluster, exploring possible financing options with

governments and healthcare providers in the region. But as Faber explains: “An increase in expenditure doesn’t always represent an increase in efficiency; again this is where Siemens can support. We can not only ensure that the facilities are equipped with the very latest integrated technologies, but we can also ensure that the staff and operatives are fully trained in the operation of the equipment.” The recent opening of the Technology and Leadership Centre in Qatar is just one example of how Siemens is positioned to provide such training. Additionally, there are some unique regional healthcare issues that provide Siemens with business potentials. For example, the prevalence of diabetes in the Middle East is among the highest in the world at around nine percent1. “One of the secondary conditions of diabetes is cardiac problems. By implementing Key Account Managers to work closely with governments and ministries, Siemens can help with screening and both preventative and therapeutic medicine.”

Finally, Faber details the importance of looking after customers once the sale is complete. “I want to ensure that we continue to focus on our after sales service. This is one element that our good reputation is based upon. We need to increase the efficiency in our service and continue to improve, keeping abreast of new technologies and developments”.

Tips to Avoid Heart Disease

Heart disease has become a major health problem of our age. In this article, we will cover some tips about avoiding heart disease.

The first thing to do is to lead an active lifestyle with regular exercise. Your target is a minimal 30-min brisk walk or jogging, or a 20-min, cycling or swimming session for at least 5-days a week. The second mandatory step is heart-healthy eating. You need to be selective in what you eat and avoid foods harmful to your heart. Such foods are chiefly solid fats (saturated and trans fats).

Saturated fats are solid at room temperature and are found largely in red meat, high-fat dairy products (like butter) as well as coconut and palm oils. Trans fats are formed when hydrogen is added to

vegetable oils, making the oil more solid and less likely to spoil. This process is called hydrogenation and is used in preparation of ghee and margarine.

When you choose fat for cooking, select oils, especially olive or canola oils, though corn and sunflower oils are also acceptable. When selecting meat, prefer poultry and fish over fatty beef portions. And remember, deep fried items (like fried fish) can be as dangerous as eating high fat beef, so avoid them.

In dairy products, select skimmed milk or boiled fresh milk at home and then remove all of its cream. Many of us probably do not know that yoghurt with its thick cream removed is as good a source of proteins and calcium as milk itself and moreover, requires much less effort by your body for digestion. Hence, it is a very good alternative to milk. Avoid butter and margarine.

An important aspect of healthy diet is abundant use of vegetables and fruits. They are low in calories and are good sources of vitamins and minerals. They are also rich in dietary fiber which helps reduce your body cholesterol. When used in between main meals as snacks they can reduce your calorie intake by reducing your hunger. When taken with meals they help by filling your stomach and giving you a sense of fullness. An important caveat here is salad. Of the many different types of dressings available, select only those which are not stuffed in high fat mayonnaise, butter or creamy garnish. Similarly, avoid fruits in cream or heavy sauces.

One important aspect of our daily diet that is largely under-estimated for its nutritional value is the role of whole grains. They are good sources of fiber and other nutrients.

A diet high in fiber can help lower blood cholesterol levels and reduce your risk of heart disease. Whole grains are also important sources of vitamins and minerals, such as thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, folate, selenium, zinc and iron. In the end, remember too much of anything can be bad so be moderate in your daily life and your diet, and vary your food selection frequently keeping in mind the basic principles mentioned above.

Siemens is working on methods to quickly identify the genetic fingerprints of pathogenic organisms. The data are the foundation for highly sensitive diagnostic methods. Researchers with Siemens Corporate Technology (CT) have developed algorithms that filter the characteristic features of pathogens out of their genetic code. As Pictures of the Future reports, Siemens Healthcare was able to use this method to reliably diagnose the H1N1 virus shortly after the emergence of the so-called swine flu last year.

Before new viruses can be combated effectively, it must be possible to identify them unequivocally. In the case of the H1N1 virus, for instance, a criterion for determining whether a patient was suffering from normal influenza or the swine flu was needed quickly. The quickest and most accurate way to diagnose a virus is to replicate and measure certain segments of its DNA using the PCR method.

Siemens CT researchers in Princeton, New Jersey, use special pattern recognition algorithms like those Siemens develops for biometric sensors, for example. With the help of high performance computers, they use the genetic data of a virus to identify its characteristic nucleic acid sequences The methods are also used to combat bacteria.

LED street light bulbs from Osram will soon light up the entire old town of Regensburg, Germany. The city initially equipped two streets with the retrofit light bulbs – developed by Osram Opto Semiconductors and Siemens Regensburg – to test whether this technology would be right for the medieval world heritage site. After residents and passersby approved of the new lighting in surveys, all 250 light bulbs will now be switched over to LEDs by 2011.

As the magazine Pictures of the Future reports, this new solution will cut power consumption in half. It will also reduce maintenance costs, because LEDs last more than twice as long as conventional street light bulbs.

The new bulbs generate a warm light, similar to daylight, that shines on the historic building facades, highlighting their natural colors even at night. German street lights consume three to four billion kilowatt hours annually.

This is an issue for many communities because about one third of street lighting systems are 20 years old or older. By modernizing them, cities can reduce their electricity costs by about 50 percent. In addition, there is the EU directive that has effectively ordered the demise of the conventional light bulb, which will impact the less efficient street lighting methods. LEDs offer an attractive alternative because they are not only highly efficient, but they can be individually actuated and adjusted. Their light rays can be directed precisely to the desired areas and thus enable less light usage overall.

A new material is set to make the frequency inverters used with large electric motors more efficient and powerful. Together with several partners, researchers from Siemens Corporate Technology (CT) and experts for large electrical drives at Siemens Industry Drive Technologies are studying how the semiconductor silicon carbide can be used as a diode material in place of pure silicon. Such an approach will reduce inverter energy losses by as much as 15%. The recently launched research project is receiving approximately €1.7 million in funding from the German Ministry of Education and Research.

Large machines such as pipeline pumps and compressors for natural gas liquefaction systems and ship propulsion systems are currently powered almost exclusively by electric motors that are operated at variable speeds. These motors

require frequency inverters that convert the normal European power line frequency of 50 Hz into a variable frequency that ranges from zero to approximately 200 Hz. The inverters function much like a dimmer for controlling the brightness of a light source.

Osram Opto Semiconductors has raised the efficiency of its high performance red light-emitting diode (LED) by 30% under laboratory conditions. This record-setting efficiency was achieved through optimization of the chips. The improved LED is currently more efficient than any other diode that operates at the same wavelength. Red LEDs are used in vehicle taillights and brake lights, for example, and for illuminating buildings and stages.

They are also used to generate one of the base colors in small projectors, and in combination with white LEDs, they produce a very comfortable warm white light for illuminating interiors. The efficiency increase means the units now achieve a higher light output at the same level of power consumption. However, their application not only saves energy but also space, since fewer diodes can now produce the same brightness. LED efficiency ratings indicate the amount of light that can be obtained from one watt of electric output.

Plans call for the new technology to be transferred from the lab into production as quickly as possible. Osram developers also expect to achieve further significant efficiency increases, as the potential for material improvement and the optimization of output efficiency has yet to be exhausted.

Anti-Corruption In-Person Training plays an important role in increasing compliance awareness, introducing regulations and

policies, and maintaining integrity culture at Siemens. Anti-Corruption Refresher Training was launched in Pakistan in March 2010 by the Regional Compliance Office. This training provides a platform for the managers and employees to discuss compliance issues that are more relevant to their daily work.

Based on the global framework, localization has been done to make it more relevant to the Pakistan’s audience. Necessary facilitation will be provided by compliance officers.

The training covers the following areas:

Siemens Ltd. Saudi Arabia has announced the completion of a EUR155 million project with the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC), to provide a harmonized grid solution for a major substation in the Kingdom. Siemens has been working with SEC for over 40 years on numerous electrical projects.

The 380 kilovolt substation, located in theAl Qassim province, adds 1000 MVA (Mega Volt Ampere) of firm power transmission capacity to the Saudi Arabian grid, helping to keep pace with the rapidly growing demand of power. The substation facilitates a link between the country’s regional electricity networks, transmitting ultimately 1000 MVA of power from the central region to the western region viaAl Madinah or vice versa. He said that this project will connect Owaynat with the national unified electricity grid in order to facilitate the reclamation of approximately 220 thousand acres and accordingly will help in implementing new projects in the

The Middle East’s importance as a key growth region for Siemens was emphasised when the company’s Managing Board held their quarterly meeting in Doha, Qatar, in June.

The Middle East Cluster’s strategic growth initiative pushME, provided a backdrop to the meeting, as key personnel from the region and headquarters presented plans to the Board Members. The meeting also provided the opportunity for the Board Members to meet country principals and key customers from across the region.

During the meetings, the board outlined the company’s intentions to strengthen its presence in the region, especially is the investment in human development in the region to further support the region’s ambitious development plans. Commenting on the decision to hold the Managing Board Meeting in Qatar, the Middle East

Cluster CEO, Erich Kaeser said:

future. According to Eng. Hatem El-Ghoroury to President of Power Transmission and Power Distribution, Siemens Egypt, this national project is not only considered to be very important because it will connect East Owaynat with the national unified electricity grid., but it was also highly prioritized by Siemens as a huge project and one of its most important objectives for this year. Siemens won this project after strong competition with the Egyptian companies who participated in the tender. Winning the project proves the strength of Siemens as a market leader and as one of the most important pioneers. Siemens has a complete portfolio and a broad spectrum of innovative products and solutions that are needed to implement such complex projects, which require highly specialized capabilities and skills.

All the required work for this project including the design, implementation and management, is completely handled and managed by an Egyptian work force. Moreover, all the equipment used in the project, including the high voltage work, will be manufactured locally at the company’s facilities in the Arab Republicof Egypt.

Siemens Bahrain recently announced plans to establish a service centre to supply the steel industry in the Middle East with the construction, overhaul and repair of mechanical equipment. Located in Baytik Industrial Oasis (BIO), the service centre will help the 26 existing steel mills in the region to reduce the downtime of their machines for maintenance and repair, since time consuming import of spare parts from Europe and South Asia willbe obsolete.

A team of metallurgical experts, supported by a workforce of 40 technicians including 20 Bahraini Nationals, will be running the 25,000 square feet center and deliver metallurgical services focusing on rolling mills, melt shops and guides services.

The center is planned to be fully operational by the end of 2010. The centre will also be offering business and technical trainings for the new employees in cooperation with the National Institute for Industrial Trainings (NIIT). Siemens Connect asked Marek Szymanek, CEO of Siemens Bahrain, the reasons behind launching the Metallurgical Service Centre in Bahrain:

Szymanek commented: “Middle East steel companies are very much dependent on imported spare parts. With this centre, Siemens will be playing a crucial role for the industry in terms of localizing production and reducing downtime and operational costs.“

“With a long standing business presence in the Lower Gulf of over 35 years, Siemens has been an active partner in Bahrain‘s drive for sustainable development,” Szymanek continued. “Once again, our investment in this service centre showcases Siemens‘ local commitment and active role as a part of the local community.”

“The continuous development of Bahrain and the remarkable facilities of the Baytik Industrial Oasis played a crucial role for us to invest here. I believe, it is an excellent fit, as Siemens is driven by innovation and sustainability, very similar to the development plans the Kingdom is pursuing. The strategic location of BIO with excellent access by sea, air and road will enable us to serve better to the Middle East‘s growing steel industry.” Szymanek concluded.

As the turn-key partner, Siemens provided technical solutions at all stages of the construction, installation, testing and commissioning process of the substation. This included GIS (gas insulated switching), transformers, metering and control systems, protection systems, civil and electro mechanical work for seamless, reliable and efficient energy flow in Saudi-Arabia.

Saleh M. Al Onaizan, Executive Vice President, SEC commented: “Siemens has an excellent track record in this region and we have built up a strong and long lasting relationship with them. Siemens brought the technical know-how and innovative solutions, which greatly assisted in the development of the substation’s infrastructure and we are sure this project will greatly benefit the residents of the Kingdom.” Lutz Kahlbau, CEO of Siemens Saudi Arabia said: “We have had a long-term working relationship with the energy sector since 1954 and we are delighted to offer our products and services to this project, which will fundamentally increase the power supply to the region improving the benefit to the end user.

Saudi Arabia is one of our key markets in the Middle East and we are ambitious to see growth here, as well as across the region. Strengthening our relationships with companies such as SEC is vital. We combine a great technological expertise with unique customer intimacy, so that the latest technologies we bring on board are as relevant to their needs as to the end users demand.”
