SCHOOL SUPPLYSQUAD

AN OUTREACH OF TRINITY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

It is time to prepare for the next school year by collecting school supplies and donations to provide for disadvantaged children at up to 30 AISD elementary schools Summer sales of school supplies will be underway by mid-July and in years past many School Supply Angels have given us a great start by providing innumerable bags of supplies Everyone can partic-ipate and the cost during summer sales is as low as 15 to 75 of the normal cost August 9-11 is the school supplies tax exempt weekend Additionally monetary donations made out to Trinity and designated ldquoSchool Supply Squadrdquo allow us to purchase nearly all the supplies needed for the full school year

Ten volunteers covering about three schools each coordinate with the school counselor to obtain requirements for all classes draw the supplies from our stock and deliver them to the school The children we serve typically are those teachers recognize as truly in need and could do better if they had all the supplies required by assignments - the kind of students that teachers themselves actually go out and buy for We want no child to ldquofall through the cracksrdquo or have to face the stigma of being in need poor not like the other kids

A couple of schools found other means of supply last year but we continued as their backup supplier We supplied approximately 7900 units last school year versus 7000 the year before both years down slightly from previous years as the Arlington church-wide back to school event at Cowboys stadium invites and supplied children identified as ldquoat riskrdquo students We will support the kickoff effort monetarily again this year in addition to supplying children as need-ed each month throughout the full school year

The turquoise blue school supply box will be in the Great Hall starting early July and the items below are those we need this year Monetary donations will go toward helping further the education of an Arlington child and possibly leading to a more productive successful life for these deserving kids

JULY SPECIAL OFFERING RECIPIENT

ANNOUNCEMENTS

June Special Offering ResultsGlenlake Camp and Retreat Center $661

On Sunday July 7 we will receive a Special Offering that will benefit two Christian ministries Operation Christmas Child and Arlington Charities

Operation Christmas Child is one of the multitude of ministries established by Samaritanrsquos Purse a non-denominational Christian missions ministry founded by Franklin Graham the son of evangelist Billy Graham Operation Christmas Child focuses on the collection of small toys and gifts that are packaged into shoeboxes and are sent to children of all ages world-wide primarily during the Christmas season

Arlington Charities is a 501 (c-3) non-profit organization that was founded in 1978 to feed the hun-gry and clothe the poor Their many programs of service include the provision of food and clothes school supplies Thanksgiving food baskets and Christmas food baskets provision of Christmas toys for children offering household goods lunches for the homeless of Arlington (3 days a week) information and referral services and crisis assistance for local emergencies such as storm dam-age fires etc

Events in our society have shown an increase in violence in our schools and places of worship We all hope and pray nothing bad ever happens at our church or anyone associated with it We would like to think that if anything were to happen everyone would know exactly what to do While Trinity has some plans to respond to emergencies at the church we have a lot of areas which need strengthening

Last Fall the Trustees approved the formation of an Emergency Action Plan Committee to investigate various emer-gencies and make recommendations to improve our preparedness Our goal is to improve our polices and capabil-ities to minimize things from happening and to be aware and prepared to react when they do These emergency areas include personal injuries children safety special needs people facility damage threats robbery disruptive actions and attempts to do bodily harm

Staff hospitality volunteers and congregational training will be a big part of this effort Some additional safety capa-bility such as first aid kits for burns and cuts remote door locking additional alarms and security cameras are possi-bilities In the short term be looking for better emergency signage and announcements of basic First Aid CPR and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training In the long term we will be looking to inside and outside resources in developing the plan and forming an Emergency Response Team

Also we are very thankful for the off-duty police who help provide security It is appropriate to tell them thanks but please refrain from extended conversation so they can concentrate on providing vigilant security If you have a desire to be a part of this planning have ideas about emergencies to consider or have an interest in be-ing part of the response team please contact Jim Bilger or Tim Smith We pray for Godrsquos protection and for guidance in this planningimplementation

Trinity contacts and their schools are belowbull Pam Willis Morton Athertonbull Karen Thomas Bebensee Williams Fitzgerald bull Dixie Hoover Anderson Crouch Patrickbull Jim Burgess West Starrett Turning Pointbull Sally Powers Rankinbull Don Powell Berry Knox Johnsbull Floyd Ostrom Burgin Crow S Davis Workman JHSbull Tippi Elliott Amos Hale Fosterbull Ike Bangs Ellis Roquemore Sherrod
