fall release. In this film, the son ofthe original scanner must resist a

of scanners who want him toNew Order.

Finally, the best for lastcategory, including two movieswhich are the third in a series. TheTwo Jakes stars Jack Nicholson, who also directs,as private eye JakeGittes. This should be one of thebetter sequels this year. Along withThe Two Jakes, Exorcist Ill, andThe Godfather III are both scheduled for 1990 release. The secondExorcist sequel comes thirteenyears after first sequel, focusing onthe same town. Its seventeen yearslater and there is a strange stringof murders being committed, withall the victims being priests. Thesequel to see though, is The Godfather Ill. Both the original and itssequel won the Academy Awardfor Be~t Picture. Francis Ford Coppola dIrects and co-writes the thirdinstallment in the saga of theCorleone family. Al Pacino stars, with Diane Keaton and Talia Shire. The real question isn't whether itwill win an Academy Award, butprobably how many will it win?

That covers the sequels comingout this year. There are a few othermovies worth mentioning, but I'llsave those for next week.

The sequel that everyone knowsis coming, unless you've had yourhead in an oven, is Back to the Future Ill. Being shot simultaneously with BTTF II, saving somewherein the neighborhood of 10 to 12million dollars, Back to the FutureIII will be released sometime thissummer. Marty and Doc get to runaround in the old west, fight it outwith Biffs great-grandfather, and

to fix a DeLorean. If you likedyou'll want to see III, believe

me.On the list of "Why did you

make a sequel?" sequels is Back tothe a sequel of Future Force.Did anyone see the first one? Also,Basket Case 2, Delta Force TheGate II, Puppet Master andManiac Cop II are all sequels tomovies that basically no one sawor liked.

(If you did though, the sequelis coming out this year.)

In the worst title for a sequelcategory is Subhumanoid Meltdown: Class ofNuke 'Em High PartII. Mutants abound at TromavilleUniversity, where the student bodygets to battle for their lives. Goreand blood guaranteed.

For those of you with a taste forthe scary or horrifying, there aremore of them for you this year.Prom Night Ill: The last Kiss isscheduled for spring release, whileChilds Play 2 and A Nightmare onElm Street 6 will come out in thefall.

There is one entry in the surprise sequel category. The Godsmust be Crazy II is scheduled forspring release. N!Xau goes onanother adventure, this timesearching for his children who accidentally get picked up bypoachers.

There are a couple of sequelsthat are hoping to do as well astheir predecessors. Peter Wellerreturns in Robocop II, which follows Murphy through battles witha drug-crazed gang, mind "rehabilitation," and another nasty robot.Meanwhile, with his partner Nancy Allen's help, he tries to gainback his lost humanity. Another 48Hrs. brings Nick Nolte and EddieMurphy back together again, to

an Aryan-supremist biker organization.

Joe Dante brings back his furry monsters in Gremlins 2: TheNew Batch. This time they're terrorizing New York City. YoungGuns II takes the survivors fromYoung Guns and tells the story ofhow Billy the Kid REALLY died. Finally, Bill and Ted return in, ofcourse, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure II. What bodacious peoplefrom the past will they meet thistime?

In the random sequels sectionthere are a few entries. Ernest goesto Jail, The Rescuers Down Under,Neverending Story II, Rocky XXI(Just kidding, its only number V),and Texasville, a sequel to The Last

Onecropped uppresentation waspoorer nations and the environment. Much of the environmentalproblem is related to the destruction of the tropical rain forests inSouth America, where many of thecountries gain revenue from exploiting their natural resources.

Although many environmentalissues were touched upon, one important issue that was not discussedwas the Malthusian questionpopulation control. Nevertheless, the United Nations and Sierra Clubhave subdivisions that deal withthis issue.

In the past, Caltech has notbeen a hotbed of environmentalprotectionism. Public assembliesthat deal with the environment havebrought the spotlight upon the needfor reform and regulation. Due tothe scientific nature of Caltech, anawakening of environmentalistconsciousness is needed, for manyof the environmental problems arerelated to the scientific world.

On April 21, the city of Pasadena will host numerous activities andevents on the Arroyo Parkway, next to the Rose Bowl, to encourage and foster interest in theenvironment, which will be part ofa nation-wide observanee of EarthDay. Although events such as thesehave focused attention on andmarked the increasing importa:nccof environmental issues, in thewords of Sandford, the solution tothe environmental problem is "notjust an event; it is a process."

from page 1Rowland named carbon dioxideand methane as the two gaseswhich wreak the most havoc on theatmosphere. He noted that bothgases have two-foldincreases within a and thatthe cause of diox-ide concentrations was the burningof fossil fuels, while the secondarycause was the destruction of tropical rain forests.

Alan R. Maler, one of the threepanel members and a practicing attorney, directed the environmentalissue to the forum of legislationenacted to counter the effectsglobal pollution'.

"Action by alchemy," or "legislation by crisis" was the term usedby Maler to describe the idea thatpolitical action is not taken until anactual crisis develops. He gaveseveral illustrations of this, including the cause-effect relationship between the 1969 disaster when ariver in Ohio caught on fire and theenaction of the Clean Water Actjust three years later in 1972.

In addition to the Clean WaterAct, Maler listed nine importantpieces of federal legislation thatwere enacted to combat the growing environmental problems, whichincluded the Occupational Safetyand Health Administration, th<:Clean Air Act, and the Toxic Substance Control Act.

Although a number of important acts were passed, Malernevertheless remarked that the history of environmental acts consistsof a series of patchwork legislation, and that a lack of consistency hasled to a lack of a comprehensive, overall view.

On the international level, GaryHerbertson spoke of the UnitedNations Environment Programmeand its effects on the environment. The U. N. Environment

BlackerBack by popular demand, the Blacker Hovse Inside World. Sorry, dudes,

but we've got work too. There's more to life than the Inside World (or so theytell us). We were kind of hoping that the frosh would get a clue and do something, but we forgot that our frosh are LAME! The frosh have been persecutedwith no ill (or even dampening) effects on the perpetrators. Welcome to the newkinder, gentler Blacker Hovse when you can RF more than half the frosh andget off scot free.

Well, maybe not all of them are completely lame, just mostly lame. Anymore news on "The Perfect Ride", Bill? After the stunning performance of yourfirst one, we can hardly wait. Don't knock yourself out too much, though. Remembel', you're the one who gets to clean up after it now.

I wil give the Cubs one thing. They could probably beat the Broncos in football. Baseball, on the other hand, is a different story ...

Roompick was a while back. We're mostly moved in now. Only a half dozenor so boxes left, and I'm sure we'll be done by next roompick, although movingout went rather smoolthly with nothing obstructing our path, including the hooksin the closet. Also, we hereby resolve not to blast obnoxious music into the libraryanymore. We're sorry if we annoyed you. Stay out of the courtyard.

We'd like to express our sympathies for those poor unfortunates in Rickettsthat, due to their roompicks, are forced to live on our courtyard and listen tothe annoying sounds of sophomores flaming to the sound of yum-yum monsters. The president's life is such a difficult one. Speaking of yum-yums, the L10ydieshave gotten to 36th level. Congratulations, guys, that's better than we'll everbother to do.

As usual, Nominations succeeded in their primary purpose. Dinner went evenlonger than expected, although we didn't reach last year's record of over 400offices. Oh well, there are always write-ins. They also succeeded in their secondary purpose - exposing the true desires of certain members of the hovse. Andall this time, we thought the sounds coming out of 00 were cats being torturedto death. Besides, isn't that sort of thing illegal in New Hampshire?

Hovse elections we as serious as ever. Suprise events included John Sununu's sudden withdrawl from the presidential race and endorsment of Ben Hoiland, and Graham "Synonym" MacNamara's fanatic support after proclaiminghimself the emperor, messiah, and God incarnate. It was a joke, dammit. Whydidn't any of the frosh get it? In a distinctly antisocial move, several people maliciously voted for the Antisocial Team for social team, and we didn't cast anyof them. Not even we.are that antisocial. And remember, Monday is a mandatory Metallica Monday. Mosh it up!

This week's social event: Pestering social team about this week's social event,Pete about alley ordering, Andrea about the hovse list, Brian about a card catalog, and ath team about sugar bags, dammit. This week's Antisocial event: watching frosh build their variable voltage regualted power supplies.

"Boy, that's gotta suck."

of six miles. In January of 1975,a charge of between three and fivepounds (depending on who ising the story) was set off with theCannon pointed directly at thedoors of Page House. The destruction which followed prompted theadministration to have Southwestern take the Cannon back. So,on January 17, 1975, the FlemingCannon once again found itself onthe lawn of Southwestern. It wouldbe over six years before Flemingcould reclaim its pride and joy, andbring the Cannon home.

On February 7 of 1981, aftermonths of negotiations, in a reenactment of events almost a decade earlier, the Cannon was onceagain pulled three miles and placedin its old spot in front of FlemingHouse. With only one exception ithas sat there ever since.

Harvey Mudd College has always claimed to have a rivalry withCaltech. In 1986, several Muddstudents decided to prank Caltechby stealing the Cannon. Waitingfor spring break, when there wouldbe little opposition to their plans, the Mudd students made theirmove. Loading the Cannon on atruck, they hauled it back to theircampus. When the Flems cameback from spring break, they foundthat their cannon was missing.

After finding out what happened and acquiring the neccessarytransportation for a three ton cannon, they left to reclaim it. Arriving at Mudd, they loaded theCannon with spaghetti and taughtthe Mudd students that it's not wiseto fool with Fleming.

Since then the Cannon has beensecured to the Olive Walk andplaced on the non-RF list, makingany future pranks on it an honorcode violation. With new safetyrules, encouraged by the administration, it is unlikely that Flemingwill ever lose the Cannon due tooverenthusiasm. Currently theCannon is fired six times per year- for Rotation, Ditch Day, BastilleDay, Commencement, and the endof the first and second terms. It isalso fired for special occasions, such as next week's birthdaycelebration.

Nothing in Fleming's historyrivals the story of the Cannon. Ithas been a favorite Rotation topic, site for class pictures, and sourceof memories ranging from the"Nordstom modified pound" andthe Lloyd jello incident, to the dayFleming blew Page's doors wideopen. The Cannon has touched thelives of all who have been involvedwith it. It is much more than a threeton piece of metal or an antiquewar relic. It is a part of history anda special part of the Caltech community.

Slick FBI agent John Buckner (Kiefer Sutherland) keeps Huey Walker (Dennis Hopper) at gun point while Huey just wants to make peace.

Tech

Shane SaubyAsk anyone over thirty, or any

one who loved Easy Rider, whothey would pick to playa hippy ina movie and they would say Dennis Hopper. Some of you mayremember him as the alcoholic assistant coach from Hoosiers, or thewhacked out science teacher fromMy Science Project. In the later hereturns from the future with abeard, brandishing a peace symboland stating that the future will begroovy.

Well, in the Paramount release,Flashback, Dennis Hopper is theperfect hippy. His entire mannersays rebel, but only when it needsto, and the rest of the time he's laidback and peaceful.

Hopper plays Huey Walker, the man who made the cover oftime twenty years ago, after pulling a prank on the Vice-President,Spiro Agnew. He's arrested by theFBI for malicious activity or some

and promptly escapes. Itsyears and an

mous phone call thecatch him again.

Now its up to John Bw~knler,

Kiefer Sutherland, totransport from San Fransiscoto Spokane, where he will be tried. With a little from the weather,a long train ensues, duringwhich Walker his escape. When they a stop over, Hueyis in Buckner's clothes, impersonates John, and places John inthe custody of the local police. While injail, Buckner is abused bythe sheriff, who is running forCongress.

After a phone call from thethe identity problems are

solved, Walker and Buckner arebrought back together let youfind out how), and then both become fugitives as the Sheriffower tries to kill them both.

The movie as a whole is finecomedy and good entertainment. Both Sutherland and Hopper dofine jobs of portraying their different, yet similar characters. Hopperis great at being slightly off-center,looking at things differently thenmost of us, and seeing the good inthe bad and vice versa.

There are some moments in thebeginning of the film where the obvious message of the movie is blatantly exposed, but these momentsare few and far between. The action scenes are a little too stagedand forced in places, but the flowof the movie is fairly good.

Along with Hopper and Sutherland, there are some fine perfomances put in by the supportingcharacters. Carol Kane shows upas an old friend of John's, beingboth happy to see him and upsetthat he hasn't kept in touch.

The funniest performancesother then the leads were the twobungling ex-rebels that Hueybumps into in a bar, played byRichard Masur and MichaelMcKean. There bungling attemptto save from the FBI backfires completely ..

Overall, Flashback had its moments and actually gave the viewer something to think about. It ratesthree and a half stars.
