Summer term 2018 Number 3 08/06/2018 www.stivesjunior.org.uk Dear Parents / Carers, It has been a jam-packed summer term so far and it is amazing to think that we are now in the very last half term of the school year. Sadly there is often change around this time of year and we have to say goodbye to a number of staff. Mr Michael Duce, our fantastic school cook is leaving Chartwells, our catering company, to take up another position in town. We are really sad to lose not only a great cook, but someone who shows such a friendly and genuine regard for the children and their well-being. We are pleased, however to welcome Miss Chelsea Filewood to lead the kitchen staff. She has been working alongside Michael recently to ensure that everything continues seamlessly. Mr Richard Drake, who has been our Site Manager at SIJS for five years, will leave us at the end of next week. We would like to thank him for his determined work, often unnoticed behind the scenes, in keeping everything ship-shape, clean, neat, tidy and safe for the children and adults. We wish him the very best in his new role. We are currently advertising for a new Site Manager – details can be found at: www.cornwall.gov.uk/jobs-and-careers/jobs-with- cornwall-council-our-partners-and-schools At the end of this term, we also say a fond farewell to Mrs B and Miss Bowen who leave SIJS after twelve and three years respectively. Both teachers have worked tirelessly to provide the very best care and education for the children of SIJS. They have provided many rich and exciting opportunities for the children, as well as being positive, professional and fun members of our staff team. We hope that the schools they are both moving on to realise how lucky they are to have them. We are delighted to have recruited Ms Naomi Brown to our teaching team for September. She will be joining us at times during the remainder of the term to get to know the SIJS community. We will share the classes and whole teaching team for September with you shortly. MOVING UP! On Monday 2nd and Tuesday 3rd July, Y6 pupils going to St Ives School in September will attend transition days to get to know key staff, places and procedures and start to feel familiar with their surroundings. On the morning of these two days, all other children at SIJS will spend time with their new class teacher for September as part of our transition programme. YEAR 6 LONDON The Year 6 visit to London this year was a whirlwind of exciting opportunities! The children were amazing – taking in all the sights and sounds and showing a keen interest in all that was around them in the nation’s capital. Experiences included a trip on the London Eye, visits to the Natural History and Science Museums, mixing with the rich and famous at Madame Tussaud’s and being blown away by the experience of two West End shows – Matilda and School of Rock. They showed enormous energy and a sense of fun during the packed schedule, acted responsibly and also showed a real care and support for each other. It really was a pleasure to see their enjoyment and curiosity alongside their growing independence and confidence. Sijs Learning SIJS NEWSLETTER

DARK SKIES: BRIGHT STARS

Exciting news!We are very pleased for our Year 4 to have beeninvited to work with the Dark Skies: Bright StarsProject. We will shortly be sharing moreinformation about this exciting venture, but hereis a brief outline of what is involved:

The project is to mark West Penwith’s applicationfor ‘Dark Skies’ status, by celebrating the richhistory of astronomy in Cornwall and looking athow ancient astronomers would have used thesun, stars and moon to navigate their way overland and sea. They will take part in a researchvisit to the Merry Maidens stone circle withastronomy heritage expert Carolyn Kennet tolearn about archeoastronomy and land-basednavigation. This will be followed by a workshopwith artist Keith Sparrow who will be usingperformance poetry and illustration to helpinterpret learning from the research trip. Finally, the children will use what they have learned tothink about navigation in their own lives and tomake poems about their own maps and journeysto be performed at the Sea Salt and Sails Festivalin Mousehole.

ATHLETICSThursday afternoon saw a group of 37 excitedathletes travel to Carn Brea for the annualprimary athletics competition. There were track

Showing their usualstrength, determination and team spirit, the StIves Junior team performed brilliantly against theother 15 schools taking part. This resulted in animpressive haul of gold, silver and bronze medals,as well as gaining the bronze medal in the overallrelay competition.
