CHAPTER ACTIVITIES The activities and tasks of Silesian University of Technology SPIE Student Chapter are mainly focused on these topics:

• Popularization of photonics science in the local community The aim is to increase interest in science and encourage young people to study optoelectronics at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the Silesian University of Technology.

• Developing the competence of Chapter members in the field of optoelectronics and provide

possibility for knowledge exchange, as well as develop personal relations with members of other chapters/institutions – this goal is realized by taking active part in various chapters meetings and conferences.

• Designing and implementing research projects related to optics and optical phenomena for

future engineers and graduates from our Chapter and students of Silesian University of Technology.

These goals were realized in 2016 through the following activities:

OPTO-Meeting for Young Researchers & SPIE/OSA Student Chapter

Meeting 2016 - 06 Jun 2016 - 09 Jun 2016 Conference was organized in Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics of Gdansk University of Technology. Silesian University of Technology SPIE Student Chapter has widely supported organization of Opto-Meeting 2016 and invited professor Valery V. Tuchin as an invited speaker through SPIE Visiting Lecturer Program. This is the annual (each year) conference to share own scientific and personal development and experience gained in optics and physics research done by conference participants. This conference is international and very popular for young scientist from Europe. In each edition of the conference, several foreign speakers are invited to make very interesting lectures for young researchers. Main topics of conference include, e.g.: sensors, quantum optics, optoelectronics, imaging techniques, biomedical optics, optical modeling and simulations, fiber optics, optical communication. Our Chapter was represented by seven people, and following topics were presented:

• Piotr Kałużyński, Mateusz Wójcik: “An experimental elaboration and analysis of fruit and vegetables natural dyes for manufacturing dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs)”,

• Piotr Kałużyński, Mateusz Wójcik: “Experimental elaboration and analysis of various dye-sensitized TiO2 solar cells (DSSCs) structures dyed by natural dyes and conductive polymers (P3HT) with the addition of graphite oxide layer”,

• Marcin Procek: “Fast chemoresistive NO2 gas sensor based on the undoped ZnO nanostructures activated by temperature and UV radiation”,

• Grzegorz Adamski, Tomasz Herzog, Piotr Kałużyński: “Optical properties of SU-8 polymer planar waveguides”,

• Tomasz Herzog, Piotr Kałużyński: “Polymer planar waveguide broad-band interferometer”,

Eco-Responsible workshops 2016 Members from the Silesian University of Technology SPIE student chapter organized special workshops on eco-responsible science, people behavior, casual life and business as a second edition of Eco-Responsible event in Katowice (Silesia) in 2016. Main aim of the workshops was to increase interest in science and encourage young people to live in an ecologic way. We presented alternative sources of energy, e.g. PV panels, hydrogen cells, lemon power station, etc. During this event all participants were introduced to optics and optoelectronics laboratory equipment containing various interactive stands of alternative energy sources. Mainly high school students, undergraduates and families with kids were participating in this event.

XX Science Picnic of National Polish Radio – Warsaw 2016 Science Picnic of National Polish Radio held in Warsaw was aimed at promoting the science of health. Our chapter introduced the subject of the impact of UV radiation on human skin, the optical detection of skin cancer cells and gas sensing principles. We presented also alternative energy sources such as photovoltaic panels and hydrogen cells. The main visitors were families with children and young people like ungraduated students interested in presented topics. The event was visited by over 100 000 people.

Khet 2.0 tournament 2016

Our chapter organized a tournament of Khet 2.0 game, which took place at the Silesian University of Technology. To the game we invited students and Ph.D. students from the Department of Electrical Engineering. During the tournament, students could get acquainted with the game Khet 2.0, its principles and benefits. The first place was awarded with game Khet 2.0.

OPTO Leadership Meeting 2016 in Gliwice

Our chapter organized a special event with professional workshops for all leaders and members of SPIE Chapters in Poland. Event lasted two days. Main goals of this meeting were scientific development of personal research and enhancing knowledge in different scientific research, e.g. optical microscopic measurements, SEM with EDS measurements and programming of National Instruments measurements cards. Professional workshops have been carried out on the first day. The second day of the Meeting was dedicated for chapters and their activities. This event strongly contributed to the improvement of cooperation between SPIE Chapters in Poland and helped strengthen connections between members of SPIE Chapters and designated directions of future activities and scientific projects.
