INTRODUCTION
This manual describes the operation and maintenance of the GRAIN-O-MATIC unloader from VALMETAL
Be sure to read it carefully before operating the machine or providing maintenance for it, in order to obtain a
thorough knowledge of efficient and safe procedures.
Please pay special attention to the filling instructions, this is very important for proper operation of the
unloader.
The Grain-O-Matic high-moisture grain unloader is very efficient in free flowing and semi free flowing material
but it will not handle shredded husks or large concentration of trash in ground ear corn.
Use a silage distributor for uniform feed distribution.
WHOLE KERNEL GRAIN
Extra high-moisture grain and /or fine material will cause the feed to set up very hard, causing slow unloading
and unnecessary strains on the sweep auger and drive mechanism.
HOW IT WORKS The GRAIN-O-MATIC features a power forced sweep arm that continually runs and rotates to keep your grain
moving, both down and across, to the center hopper. Paddles within the hopper turn at the same speed as the
sweep auger and cycle the material into the exit auger.
A ratchet mechanism drives the sweep auger drive shaft. It is engineered with a spring loaded ratchet pawl that
idles, to protect the machine, should the sweep auger meet an obstruction.
These features allow the GRAIN-O-MATIC unloader to unload free flowing and semi free flowing material.

ADJUSTING SPRING TENSION
Spring tension is pre-adjusted at 100 lbs/ft, to increase tension, tighten spring nut until you get a steady pull but
NO MORE THAN 125lbs/ft.
This means that the ratchet drive would not lift more than 125 lbs hanging from a 12" pipe wrench attached to
the drive shaft. A tension over 125 lbs/ft should cause the spring to compress enough not to turn the ratchet
gear. Use a torque wrench to adjust the tension. Set the machine to OFF, place a torque wrench on the nut
welded at the end of the ratchet wheel shaft, release the locking pawl, apply pressure until spring is compressed
5/16" and check the indicated torque (see fig. 2 and fig. 3).

LENGTH
Locking pawl in locked position. The length of the ratchet pawl should be adjusted to barely catch the next
tooth when in fully advanced position.
Lengthen or shorten pawl by turning ratchet pawl adjusting bolt in or out of rod end, then lock
with jam nut.
IMPORTANT
DO NOT USE TENSION ADJUSTING NUT TO ADJUST LENGTH OF RATCHET PAWL.

STRUCTURE THOROUGHLY AND LOCK OUT POWER AT MAIN
DISCONNECT BEFORE ENTERING TO INSTALL THE EXTENSION.
SWEEP AUGER EXTENSION
On 24’ and larger models, the sweep auger is made in 2 pieces, one main auger and an extension. The extension
must not be installed before filling. It is intended to be installed only when the silo is near empty, to clean out
the silo wall and be removed before next filling.
Grain-O-Matic Revised 2014-11-03 9
ACTUATOR STROKE ADJUSTMENT (#14C35-0167)
The stroke is adjusted with cams under the
motor cover.
1- Connect the motor (115 V):
White wire = neutral
Red wire (current) = Retract the tube
OR
Black wire (current) = Extend the tube
2- Make the motor run so that the tube
retracts, but let the extension tube turn freely
until the current to the motor is cut by the
lower cam (fixed cam).
3- MINIMUM LENGTH ADJUSTMENT: Turn the extension tube by hand up to the desired minimum length, making
sure that the inside screw does not move.
4- STROKE ADJUSTMENT: Adjust
stroke with the top (adjustable) cam.
Notes: Firmly hold the cams when
tightening or loosening the adjustment
screws.
Always set the top (adjustable) cam so
that the stroke is shorter than the desired
stroke, and progressively lengthen the
stroke by readjusting the cam.
IMPORTANT: Once the desired stroke is set, make the motor run in both directions to make sure that the current to the
motor is cut by the switches in the extended and in the retracted positions. Otherwise, the motor will
burn and the warranty will be null.
Attention: (Replacement of an actuator controlled by an AUTORATION system)
The actuator's time of operation has been programmed in the Autoration system.
The new actuator might have a different speed from the one being replaced. Do a
trial run with the new actuator in automatic mode to make sure that the opening of
the door is adequate. Contact Valmetal if a modification of the actuator's time of
operation is required to obtain an adequate opening of the door.
IMPORTANT: Make sure to always verify the sealing of the door.
Grain-O-Matic Revised 2014-11-03 10
BEFORE FILLLING
- Do not begin filling until the unloader is completely installed and ready to run.
- Grease all grease fittings.
- Check seals for leakage.
- Verify the oil level of all gearbox.
- Oil the roller chain.
- Verify tension and alignment of V-belt.
- Make sure that all components are free and running.
FILLING PROCEDURE
MAKE CERTAIN THAT THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE BE FOLLOWED IN
ORDER FOR THE UNLOADER TO WORK PROPERLY.
1- The unloader must be operated from time to time during the filling process, otherwise, the enormous load
of grain will push the sweep auger down onto the floor and the feed will pack solid around the auger,
making the start-up of the machine almost impossible. (See fig. 4)
2- Run unloader one (1) minute after the first four (4) feet of fill and make sure that the sweep auger is free
and rotating.
3- Run unloader one (1) minute after each additional eight (8) feet of fill.
4- Run unloader once a day while filling.
5- Run unloader 30 seconds once a week for the next two weeks to relieve pressure from natural settling of
fermenting grain.
6- If you do not unload for an extended period of time, run the unloader at least once a month. Certain types
of grain continue to ferment and settle long after filling, making the start-up very difficult.

PURGING
It is recommended to purge your silo with CO2 if :
- It has been filled slowly;
- A large quantity of grain is taken out at one time;
- It has been filled less than 2/3;
- The corn heats (check gasket for leakage).
Grain-O-Matic Revised 2014-11-03 12
OBJECTIVE
The idea of purging a silo with CO2 is to dilute the oxygen to avoid oxidation of the ensiled grain.
When :
The best time to purge a silo is at the end of the day when the temperature begins to drop, this creates a vacuum
effect in the silo.
IMPORTANT
Make sure all openings (hatches) are sealed.
HOW TO PURGE A SILO
Connect a cylinder of CO2 with a regulator to the nipple in the access door. Adjust the pressure slightly above
that of the structure relief valve on the roof.
As a rule of thumb, a cylinder of CO2 @ 2000 PSI will be sufficient to dilute the oxygen in the silo if injected at
the right time, this may vary, depending on the size of the silo.
OPERATING THE UNLOADER Under full load, it may be necessary to start the unloader in slow speed.
Always open the exit auger door before starting the unloader.
After the unloader is shut off, close the door securely to prevent air leaks.
Grain-O-Matic Revised 2014-11-03 13
MAINTENANCE
VENTILATE STRUCTURE THOROUGHLY AND LOCK OUT POWER
AT MAIN DISCONNECT BEFORE WORKING NEAR EQUIPMENT.
Read and understand this manual before maintening or adjusting.
Locked out power source and wait for all moving parts to stop before maintening or adjusting.
Keep all safety signs on the unloader in good condition and visibles.
Failure to follow this procedure could result in serious injury or death.
IF RUNNING OBSERVATION IS NECESSARY,
- Station a responsible person at the door.
- Stay back out of falling distance from all moving parts.
- Do not attempt to clean, oil or adjust while in operation.
- FAILURE TO HEED MAY RESULT IN DEATH OR PERSONAL INJURY.
MONTHLY
- With a hand held grease gun, grease bearings, drive
shaft, ratchet pawl and worm bushings (grease lines).
NOTE :
- Do not overgrease sealed bearings to avoid seals
damage.
- Replace worn grease fitting if necessary.
- Oil roller chain to prevent rust.
- Verify V-belt alignment and tension, correct if
necessary.
- Check oil in shaft mount gearbox.
Grain-O-Matic Revised 2014-11-03 14
TO DO WHEN SILO IS EMPTY.
Note : Lactic acid from the fermentation process makes the steel rust easily when exposed to the air and
moisture of an empty silo.
To keep your unloader from rusting :
Clean the silo floor.
Clean the sweep auger and hopper.
Apply a liberal coat of oil on the sweep auger, hopper and run some through the exit tube to prevent
rust.
Check for worn or damaged flighting or parts.
Verify oil seals of double gearbox.
Check gearbox oil level and add if necessary.
Lubricate roller chain.
Check wear, tension and alignment of the drive belt.
Remove the sweep auger extension (24’ and larger models only).
Grease the upper bearing of the lower gearbox (see drawing below).
Grease worm shaft bushings (grease lines).
GEARBOX:
- Replace gearbox oil after 100 running hours. Then
replace after 2000 hours or once a year.
- Change oil when it is hot. For best result, drain gearbox
with detergent oil type before filling with synthetic oil
ESSO GX EXTRA or equivalent.
- Clean all plugs.
NOTE: Replace gearbox oil when silo is empty and
ventilated with fresh air.

These features allow the GRAIN-O-MATIC CK unloader to unload free flowing and semi free flowing
material.

2 and fig. 3).

Grain-O-Matic Revised 2014-11-04 9
Grain-O-Matic Revised 2014-11-04 10
BEFORE FILLLING
- Do not begin filling until the unloader is completely installed and ready to run.
- Grease all grease fittings.
- Check seals for leakage.
- Verify the oil level of all gearbox.
- Oil the roller chain.
- Verify tension and alignment of V-belt.
- Make sure that all components are free and running.
FILLING PROCEDURE
MAKE CERTAIN THAT THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE BE FOLLOWED
IN ORDER FOR THE UNLOADER TO WORK PROPERLY.
1- The unloader must be operated from time to time during the filling process, otherwise, the enormous load
of grain will push the sweep auger down onto the floor and the feed will pack solid around the auger,
making the start-up of the machine almost impossible. (See fig. 6)
Certain
types of grain continue to ferment and settle long after filling, making the start-up very
difficult.

PURGING
NEVER ENTER SILO WITHOUT COMPLETE VENTILATION;
FAILURE TO HEED MAY RESULT IN DEATH OR PERSONAL INJURY.
It is recommended to purge your silo with CO2 if :
- It has been filled slowly;
- A large quantity of grain is taken out at one time;
- It has been filled less than 2/3;
- The corn heats (check gasket for leakage).
Grain-O-Matic Revised 2014-11-04 13
- FAILURE TO HEED MAY RESULT IN DEATH OR PERSONAL INJURY.

necessary.
- Check oil in shaft mount gearbox.
Grain-O-Matic Revised 2014-11-04 14
Grease the upper bearing of the lower gearbox (see drawing below).
Grease worm shaft bushings (grease lines).
GEARBOXES:
NEVER ENTER SILO WITHOUT VENTILATION WITH FRESH AIR;
FAILURE TO HEED MAY RESULT IN DEATH OR PERSONAL INJURY.
NEVER TRY TO UNPLUG UNLOADER WHILE RUNNING;
YOU COULD BE CATCH BY THE AUGER.
- Replace gearbox oil after 100 running hours. Then replace
after 2000 hours or once a year.
- Change oil when it is hot. For best result drain gearbox
with detergent oil type before filling with synthetic oil ESSO
GX EXTRA or equivalent.
- Clean all plugs.
NOTE: Replace gearbox oil when silo is empty and
ventilated with fresh air.
