Message from the Prez.... Silver City Woman’s Club The Power of Women THE INFORMANT http://silvercitywomansclub.org/ [email protected] Greetings, everyone! I hope everyone is soaking up the beautiful summer weather and I hope you enjoyed the rain event we had in June. We are blessed and have so much to be thankful for. Summer is marching on and committees are rolling up their sleeves and diving in to their big events. I would like to thank Pam for happily taking on the chairmanship of the Senior Shower scheduled for November so that Jeannine would be able to take the chair- manship of the August School Supply Drive, and thereby filling the vacant position for school supplies. Many thanks to these ladies. They have my heartfelt gratitude. Following their lead, I would like to ask everyone to please consider jumping in and assuming chairmanship of a committee. We have several chairs which need filling. We need someone to take on the job of Building Administrator, a chair for our Sweet Sale scheduled for December, Baby Shower in January, also consider chairing a Golf Tourna- ment which has been a major event but currently has no chair. I’m begging for every- one’s help, and perhaps new members could work with an experienced member to get started and gain some experience. Sharing the work load with others makes lighter work and makes everything much more enjoyable. Please call me if you can find it in your heart to help. We need everyone to volunteer to serve on a committee if we’re going to be able to keep these activities/events alive and continue to support the charities we have committed to in the past in order to benefit the women, children, and the elderly of our community. July’s hostesses are Susie, Peggy, and Rosalie. Our meeting will find us discussing the August 4th New 2 U Sale. This is a huge event and positions for working the floor area at the Sale need to be filled, as well as positions for setting up prior to the sale, cashiers, baggers, and clean-up crew following the Sale. Whew! My head is spinning. Everyone needs to come and help in order to pull this off and make money for our Club. Please think about which position you could volunteer for. My sincere thanks to everyone with smiles and good wishes for this president’s term of office. You are helping me to set off with a positive frame of mind and I look forward to working with and for each and every one of you over the next two years. Blessings, Joni Miller, President

Lynda Aiman-Smith Public Parks and More-in Silver City

Green spaces with plants, trees and other aspects of nature provide tremendous value to a community. Researchin public health points to benefits in both physical and mental health of people who regularly use parks. Parksoften have play equipment for kids, and perhaps walking paths for families for physical activity. Parks also helpour mental well being – it been shown that in as little as 10 minutes of exposure to a park’s natural environ-ment, people’s stress goes down, and they have a greater feeling of well-being and happiness.

Parks, with their trees and plants, also contribute to environmental health by slowing and capturing storm-wa-ter and cleaning air pollution. Parks also promote community health. Neighborhood parks can connect individ-uals of all ages and backgrounds who enjoy the amenities of the park, and help them develop a shared a visionfor making their neighborhood better. Any neglected public spaces can become vital community assets whenresidents, civic groups, and city leaders come together.

A public park is an area established by the Town of Silver City for the purposes of public play, recreation, andenjoyment of greenspace and nature. Recreation can be considered on a continuum from active to passive. Ac-tive recreation can be either individual or group activity. Ball fields, the swimming pool, parks with play equip-ment for children, and skate-parks are examples of parks focusing on active recreation. Passive recreationemphasizes the more natural greenspace aspect of a park. Having picnics, playing board games, and walking ontrails are good examples of passive recreation. Of course, many parks offer a variety of opportunities for recre-ation – a group of family and friends might gather and picnic before playing a softball game. In Silver City, wehave a good mix of parks.

How many parks DO we have in Silver City? Asking residents, you might hear guesses ranging anywhere fromsix to a dozen. Surprise! There are 23 “official” parks in Silver City, ranging from “parklets” and “pocket parks”so called because of their small size, to over 100 acres! Here is the list of Silver City parks, in alphabetical order:

Ben Altamirano park; Big Ditch park; Cherry Hills park; Fox field (Silver schools); Golf course; Gough park ;Hidden park ; Jaurequi park ; Johnny Banks park ; La Capilla; La Capilla park; Noble park ; Penny park ; Popestreet park ; Recreation Center; Scott park; Skate park ; Swimming pool ; Tennis courts; 32nd street park; Vir-ginia st park ; Visitors center ; Ybarra park.

Here is a link to a handy map showing all the official Silver City parks.http://www.townofsilvercity.org/pubworks/2015_Town_of_Silver_City_public_parks_map.pdf

The first two “Territorial Charter Community Volunteer” days focused on getting community members involvedin working on some neglected neighborhood parks. The first such day, held on April 14, 2018 at Ybarra park onBrewer Hill, resulted in cheerful painted walls, a big clean up of clutter and wind-blown litter, and a list of “fix-its” to repair the swings and basketball court surface to make the equipment more accessible and safe. Similarly, the June 9, 2018 “Territorial Charter Community Volunteer Day” at Hidden park resulted in some profoundbrush-whacking, contouring areas to minimize erosion, and a list of potential actions to improve equipment.

We also have other park-like spaces that are important for the community, but which are not actual officialparks – for example, the spaces by the outdoor sculpture at the Silver City Library; under the trees at the SilverCity Museum; the “parklet” in front of Szygzy Tile; the outdoor educational and seating areas in front of the of-fices of the Community Development Foundation; the neighborhood orchard on 11th St. near Pope, the SilvaCreek Botanical Gardens.

Park-like spaces provide opportunities for people to take ownership of developing and maintaining their neigh-borhood community - improving everybody’s quality of life. For example, there are neighborhood groups in Sil-ver City who are working on “Play Streets.” A regular movement in some large urban areas like New York,London, and Chicago, Play Streets make play spaces by temporarily closing streets to through traffic so kids andparents can play outside. Some communities have now-and-again Play Streets where a neighborhood gets astreet closed to through traffic so the neighbors can hold barbeques, play games, and just get out and socialize asneighbors. Other communities have regular Play Street closures for a day each week, others have actually ex-tended Play Streets for Summer where a street becomes a neighborhood play area for the summer months.

In Silver City there are a number of streets that would easily lend themselves to being temporary, or longer term,Play Streets. For example, the “stub streets” where a street ends at the Big Ditch seem to be naturals to turn intoPlay Streets. My guess is many neighborhoods where there are cul-de-sacs and dead end streets would be poten-tial places for Play Streets.

So in summary, parks are fundamentally important to the health of the people, community, and environment ofour Town. The more community members are involved in using and caring for their parks, the better the ameni-ties can become. And aside from official parks, park-like spaces (like the Silva Creek Botanical Gardens, and po-tential Play Streets) can offer major benefits to our Town.
