The Process of, Landing.Hawaiian Consul McKinley and Lieu-

tenant Lovering of General Gibbon'sstaff boarded the cruiser at noon in com-pany, with Collector .Phelps and. DeputyPert Surveyor Gaskill. The latter gen-tleman personally chalked-- , the royalbaggage with the Custom House O K"X" mark, and with "his companiontendered the freedom of the Union to itsowner.

Cousul McKinley and Lieutenant Lov-ering consulted with the King and Ad-miral Brow n as to,the hour of the recep-tion, which was finally' settled for 3:30r. m.

At that hour General Gibbons and hisfull staff, the Presidio band and twotroopsvof the Fourth Cavalry weres drawnup on the seawall in front of the Claystreet tl iat with a dozen carriages for theKing and the army officers. An im-mense crowd lined the adjacent docks, but unfortunately for the sight seers' theCharleston's starboad gangway. was offshore and- was hid-den from view. At 3 :45 a puff of smokeand a bang from one of the cruiser'sguns betokened that the King was leaving the ship, and a second later the IIawaiian flag fluttered down and. the

replaced it on the Charles-ton, while from the Swatara the starsand stripes and the home pennant, aslender 300 foot long streamer, floatedout on the breeze.

The Military Reception."'"The latter's guns joined with the Char-

The bay wasperfectly smooth and the passage to thesteps did not occupy any great length oftime.

"Way enough! Toss oars!" com-manded the smart young cadet who wasacting as coxswain, and twelve drippingblades went up in two straight rows asthe barge sheered alongside the float, . .

Admiral Brown handed his guestashore and introduced him to GeneralGibbon and staff. A handshake and afew informal words of greeting followedand the procession started. King Kala-kaua- 's

portly form was incaeed in a well-tittin- g

Prince Albert coat and his headwas topped with a black china ney-jo- t

hat. He was escorted up the gangplank aud between the waiting, salutingtroops by his Grand Chamberlain, Col-

onel George Macfarlane, and his Secre-tary, Colonel Robert lloapali Baker. Both these gentlemen were arrayed inthe gorgeous uniforms of the Hawaiianarmy, and were ablaze with medals.

His Majesty entered a carriage in wait-ing, his escort entered others, the troop-ers foimed in line, and the cavalcademoved slowly up Market street, present-ing a brilliant spectacle, r
