Lovelace Health System has expanded its cancer care services through a partnership with Hematology Oncology Associates (HOA), a leading oncology practice. Beginning in January, Lovelace Cancer Care offers patients the latest in medical oncology, including chemotherapy and hematology services, as well as radiation therapy and surgical services.

“We are proud to partner with HOA to offer seamless cancer care to our patients,” said Troy Greer, CEO, Lovelace Medical Center. “Now patients will have a full continuum of care within the Lovelace system.”

Lovelace Health System recently invested $11 million in new equipment to offer patients the latest radiation technology in New Mexico. Traditionally, concierges are found in hotel lobbies, handling special services for guests, like arranging for theater tickets or tours. Lovelace Care Concierges aren’t in hotels and aren’t in the business of getting good theater seats. They’re in the business of clearing the way for timely appointments for patients.

Lovelace Care Concierges help patients looking for a primary care doctor, those who need follow-up care after an emergency department visit and those who simply need an appointment when they get sick. A trained staffer makes an appointment for callers, typically within a day or two.

The staff of eight determines patient needs and refer them to a provider within the Lovelace Medical Group or a provider with whom Lovelace works. They also make outbound calls to patients discharged from the hospital or emergency department who don’t have a primary care provider or need to see a specialist. A registered nurse is on hand to provide clinical expertise when needed.

“Patients love it,” says Sarah Sinclair, Supervisor of Care Concierge. “We love it too because we can make most efficient use of Lovelace providers and facilities.”

Staffers now handle an average of about 3,200 inbound and outbound calls per month and make a monthly average of 450 appointments. The top specialties for referrals are family medicine, OB/GYN, orthopedics, gastroenterology and cardiology.
