Nikki’s Book Nook: BookReviewsbyNikkiFarrellLacrosse,LibraryAssistant

Christina Swartz, author of the best-selling and Oprah book club pick, Drowning Ruth, brings a provocative story to life in The Edge of the Earth. Set near the beginning of the 20th century, Swartz introduces us to Trudy Swann, a young, restless young woman of means who gives up everything to marry the impulsive dreamer,

Oskar. He takes a job as the assistant light keeper at the extremely remote Point Lucia lighthouse on the north-ern California coast. Cut off from all civilization except for the occasional supply boat, Trudy finds her circum-

stances and her life completely changed.

With her husband growing increasingly restless and remote, Trudy soon grows fond of the children of the pri-

mary light keeper and is intrigued by their stories of a mysterious mermaid that leaves them handmade gifts. She delights in learning about the local sea life, and soon she and the children are observing and cataloging the

creatures.

However, there is more to the story of the mythical mermaid and Trudy gradually uncovers a series of disturbing secrets about the elusive figure and her history with Point Lucia. Oskar’s numerous failed projects lead him to form an obsession with the mermaid,

forcing Trudy to face some harsh truths about her husband and to make some heart-breaking decisions.

Schwartz does a wonderful job of bringing the isolation and raw beauty of Big Sur and Point Lucia to life. She masterfully shows how a naïve and intelligent young woman gradually comes to terms with her circumstances and comes into her own as a person. The

main characters are finely nuanced and believable as they struggle with demanding daily life and the burden of hiding secrets. The author slowly reveals the reality of the mermaid and at the same time allows this knowledge to help Trudy mature into the woman

she is meant to be. Well written and haunting, The Edge of the Earth is a wonderful read not to be missed.

The Edge of the Earth is available at SVPL.
