CZECH 1Introduction

Czech is a West Slavic language, and the official language of the Czech Republic. It is spoken worldwide by approxi-mately twelve million people.

It is believed that the first settlers in what is today’s Czech Republic were the Boii, a Celtic tribe, and the Marcomanni, a Teutonic tribe, in the fifth century AD. In the 9th century, Old Church Slavonic, a South Slavic language comprehensible to all Slavs at the time, was introduced by St. Cyril and St. Methodius. Czech is a derivative of Old Church Slavonic, in the same way that French or Italian is a derivative of Latin. The first manuscripts written in the Czech literary language appeared in the thirteenth century.

By the 13th century, a cultural / linguistic shift took place. The Bohemian kings had been inviting German farmers, miners, and craftsmen to come and lease Czech land, and German began to be spoken, not only by the new settlers, but also by the kings and the court, who welcomed the German language and culture. For nearly three hundred years (1620 - 1918), German was the official language. The influence of German on the Czech language is apparent today in both Czech grammar and syntax.

2

CZECH 1Introduction

In the 19th century, Czech revivalists launched efforts to preserve and actively encourage the use of the Czech language. The Bohemian Museum was established in Prague; plays were performed only in Czech; scholars, historians, and writers worked together to bring the Czech language back to the forefront of contemporary culture. After some short-lived success, the revivalist movement was crushed, but although German remained the official language, Czech grammar and vocabulary had been preserved. Czech was subsequently fully restored, along with Slovak, with the declaration of an independent state of Czechoslovakia in 1918.

For a significant part of the 20th century, Czechoslovakia was a part of the Eastern Bloc of nations, and as elsewhere, Russian was taught in schools and used along with Czech. In 1993 (“the Velvet Divorce”), Czechoslovakia was dissolved into the two independent countries of Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

Czech is very similar to the Slovak language. Indeed, before the division of Czechoslovakia into two independent nations, both languages were represented in the Czechoslovakian media. At present, the most significant source of borrowings into Czech is English.

The two largest dialect groups in Czech are Bohemian (most widely spoken, and the dialect used in this course) and Hanák Moravian, spoken in the southeast. In addition the Lachian Silesian and mixed Polish-Czech dialects are

Page 7: SIMON & SCHUSTER’S PIMSLEUR CZECHsns-production-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/pimsleur/... · 1 CZECH 1 Introduction Czech is a West Slavic language, and the official language of the

3

CZECH 1Introduction

spoken by a small number of people in the northeast. All of the dialects are mutually intelligible. When conversing with other Czech speakers, you may hear slight differences between your speech and theirs, but this is only partially due to dialectical differences. Many Czech words (nouns, pronouns and adjectives) decline, meaning they change their endings. Czech word order is extremely flexible, although some rules do apply, meaning that the same idea can be expressed in a variety of different ways. In this course, we have chosen consistent word order to simplify your acqui-sition of the spoken language.

The recorded portion of the reading materials for Czech 1 will be found after the last lesson. You can do them as is most convenient for you—individually, after every other lesson or so, or all together, or after the full thirty lessons. Feel free to repeat the reading lessons as often as needed for practice with the Czech alphabet and the sounds it represents.

4

CZECH 1Czech Alphabet

As English, Czech uses the Latin alphabet. You’ll notice, however, that accents and other symbols, called “diacritical marks,” are added to some letters. This is because the Czech alphabet has to represent sound values not represented in the Latin alphabet.

A complete listing of the Czech alphabet and diacriticals follows. Wherever possible, American English pronunciation equivalents are given, but these equivalents are approxima-tions only. You should use the chart for reference only, as all the information you need to do the readings is contained on the audio.
