Commutation failures (inverter shoot-through) in line-commutated converters, operating in regenerative mode can not be avoided in case of line voltage faults or dips
Previous consequences of shoot-through: Failure of the fuses and subsequent Destruction of the thyristors (worst-case scenario)
Previous solutions:Application of DC high speed circuit breaker (DC HSCB)
Remedy:Forced discharging of the thyristors by a switch-off circuitcalled “Converter Commutation Protector” (CCP)

A "switch-off device for converters" has to be capable to switch off the thyristors in a converter, operating in regenerative mode so quickly, that semiconductor fuses, connected on the line side, are protected against melting or lifetime-shortening damage.
Fuses must not be loaded to their full pre-arcing i²t value
Thyristors must not be loaded to their full i²t value
Converter has to be protected against overvoltages(supply interruptions in operation on a transformer)
