Frida Kahlo was a famous Mexican painter. She was born inMexico City in 1907, and she began painting when she was 19 yearsold. She grew up in the tree-lined streets of Coyoacan. Her father wasHungarian-Jewish, and her mother was Mexican. She had four sisters.

She had a very difficult life. When she was young, she hadpolio. Then she had a serious bus accident when she was in highschool, and she almost died. She spent over a year in bed. She brokeher back, collarbone, ribs, and pelvis and had to have over thirtyoperations. Although she lived, she was in constant pain for the rest ofher life, and she died from complications from this accident when she

was 47.

While the young Frida was in bed recovering from theaccident, she began painting. She painted a lot about her life and theworld around her. When she was 21, she met the famous muralist DiegoRivera and fell in love. He was twenty years older than her, but sheadored him, and they were married in 1929. They lived in Mexico, the

United States, and France. Throughout her life, Frida continued painting.She had her first solo exhibition in New York City in 1938. She was veryfamous in the 1940s, but she became even more popular in the 1980s.Since then her paintings have been seen all over the world, and manybooks and plays have been written about her life. The Mexican actressSalma Hayek starred in her movie biography.

She was born 95 years ago. Her parents died when she was very young. She only went to elementary school. She had many jobs. She always worked very hard to help her mother. She was a cashier at an ice cream store here in Guzman.

She married my grandpa when she was 16 years old. She had 12 children, but one of them died when he was two years old. She traveled abroad to China, Europe, South America and some places in Africa. She is still strong and I enjoy talking to her every time I get a chance. I love her food.
