Choosing a ring can become an ordeal; time consuming, expensive and stressful. But it’s something that most men have to go through at some point. So how do you make sure that you don’t get it wrong?

The first thing to make sure of is that you are dealing with a reputable jeweler. They should be willing for you to examine their rings under a jewellers loop and should be able to answer any technical questions that you might have.

Assuming that you have found a jeweler you are comfortable with, how do you choose the best diamond to suit your budget? Diamonds are graded according to the 4Cs carat weight, color, clarity, and cut and it is these criteria that determine the stones value. Here is a quick guide to under-standing how diamonds are graded to help determine the stone that is right for you.

Carat Weight:All other things being equal, the bigger the diamond, the more valuable it is. Traditionally, men often bought one carat stones for engagement rings (a carat is one fifth of a gram), but these days most people buy stones of less than a carat. Prices go up exponentially with size, and there is a particularly sharp spike at the one carat mark. A good quality stone of less than a carat may well represent better value for money.

Color:Very few diamonds are perfectly white; most have a hint of colour in them. Colour is graded from D (the best, perfect white) down to Z (se-verely discoloured). You could do worse than focus on stones in the range E-H. If you go for a D, you are likely to be paying a premium for a barely discernible improvement. Any lower than H and you will probably notice a hint of yellow in the stone.

Clarity:Most diamonds have small imperfections or impurities trapped inside them, known as inclusions. The bigger, more central, and more numerous these are, the lower the diamonds clarity is said to be. Stones that contain inclusions that are visible with the naked eye, should be avoided

Cut:Jewellers might be referring to more than one thing when they talk about a diamonds cut. It could be a reference to its proportions and symmetry - the better these are, the more effectively the stone will reflect and refract light. A stone with a poor cut will not sparkle nearly as well as one with a good cut. This is one area where it is not worth compromising, you shouldn’t accept anything less than Good grades in this area, ideally Very Good. The term cut can also be a reference to the stones shape, whether it is Round Brilliant, Princess, or some other fancy shape. This is very much a matter of personal taste.

One thing to bear in mind though is that the round brilliant cut has been evolved over decades to maximize a diamonds sparkle and, everything else being equal, will sparkle more than other cuts. That’s not to say that you shouldn’t choose a different shape if you particularly like it but if you don’t have a strong prefer-ence, then you wont go far wrong with a Round Brilliant Cut.

International Gold and Diamond is one of the area’s premier jewelers. Years of expertise combined with our lifetime warranty of-fers all that a groom-to-be needs to find the perfect diamond engagement ring. Stop in today to view a wide selection of rings.

A Piece of Cake

Finding Sweet inSpiration ...

Page 7: Simply Hers Bridal - Jan. 2012

The sweetest part of any wedding, except maybe watching the flower girl perform her important duty, is the wedding cake. But, thankfully, gone are the days when the only decisions

available were “white or chocolate?” and “how many tiers?” Many of today’s couples are opting for a wedding cake that is as “unique” as they are.

Wedding cakes can be traditional with three tiers and frosted roses, this worked well for our mothers and grandmothers and it would still work well today. But, with all the creative ideas out there on the world wide web, it would be unjust if some effort wasn’t made to explore the options.

Today it is the “norm” for couples to think outside the box and have fun with the wedding cake. No matter what the budget, couples put a great deal of time and energy into finding the perfect choice for them. In fact, a wedding cake no longer needs to be a “cake” at all. Cupcakes, cookies and other confections have taken over the cake table as couples opt for convenience and uniqueness over tradition.

There are some amazing designs and ideas available to put a personal

touch on the special day. Is the couple into hunting, shopping or travel? There are cakes for all of them and many others. A few favor-ites are shown here but don’t be limited by what is represented. The sky is the limit.

Ultimately, the decision lies with the bride and groom. (Well, if the truth be told, the bride probably has 95% input and the groom will finish the decision with his 5% nod of approval.) Whatever decision is made, it will be the right one. Remember, the cake is a symbol of the celebration so enjoy the moment and overlook the little flaws.

TIDBITS TO KEEP IN MIND.1) Book the order for the bridal cakes one month in advance so that they could be customized as per your requirements.2)Discuss the weather conditions and location of the reception with your baker or pastry chef if the reception will be outdoors. 3)Whoever you choose, ask for references of recent customers and contact them to ask if they were satisfied and if they have any advice for you in dealing with the baker.

When it comes to coordinating a wedding, stocking the bar may be one of the more puzzling aspects. How much booze should you buy? Is it OK to serve only beer and wine? It’s a time-honored tradition to

celebrate your wedding day with spirits, and if money is no object, open the bar, hire a couple of bartenders and party into the night.

What’s that? You’re on a budget? Well, don’t worry. With a little planning and creativity, your guests will never know.

While the thought may be tempting, it’s bad manners to have a cash bar. You don’t invite people to a party and expect them to pay for their refreshments. If beer and wine are all you can afford, then make them the only options. No one will think the less of you for that, but your guests probably won’t enjoy themselves if you try to charge for a drink.

hoW MuCh Do you NeeD?If you’re doing your own catering, you need to know how much alcohol to buy. Keep in mind that you’ll need less for a morning reception than an evening one. Think of who your guests are. A more genteel crowd may be content with some good wine, but the groom’s college buddies may prefer beer. When you factor in the guests who won’t be drinking alcohol, the average consumption will be about one drink per hour. In general, a great party option is to opt for a keg of beer, three cases of wine and a case and a half of champagne for 100 guests. Two fifths of the more popular liquors -- vodka, scotch, bourbon, whiskey and rum -- should be plenty. Don’t forget to purchase mixers such as fruit juice, soda and water, too.

Put a PersoNal staMP oN itWho says you even have to have a real bar? At an informal reception, fill metal tubs with ice and chill bottles of beer and wine and let guests serve themselves. A waiter can pass champagne for toasting. How about serving just beer and wine and maybe one signature drink -- something that has special meaning for the couple? Did you meet over apple martinis at the neighborhood watering hole? You can also reflect your heritage in your choice of drinks. Is the family from Tennessee? Jack Daniel’s can be your choice. Getting married at the beach? A fruity cocktail is in order. Guests will always remember those drinks and how much fun they were. They won’t realize that you saved time and money at the liquor store.

Bar oN a BuDgetYou don’t have to break the bank to have a good time at your wedding reception. By having your wedding early in the day and focusing on less-expensive beverages, you can make the bar at your wedding reception another customized part of your special day. Another way to keep costs under control is by having the bar open only prior to dinner. Pass champagne after the meal for toasting.

Ask the liquor store if they’ll take back any unopened bottles after the reception. Many times, they’ll agree in order to make a big sale. If you’re holding the reception at a hotel, club, restaurant or reception hall, talk to the manager or the caterer. Ask if you can bring your own wine. Beware of corkage fees, which the venue may tack on for serving -- they can cause the tab to balloon considerably.

Today, many brides and grooms are incorporating more of their own personal style into their wedding day. Many couples feel if they are going to spend thousands of dollars on this day, it should be one that they will enjoy and one that is filled with all things that they enjoy. There are so many delicious sweets out that there, that it can sometimes be tricky to hone in on one goodie for your guests. One of our favorites is a S’mores Station... It is such a warm, family friendly idea that has definitely been preserved over the years and lately it seems to have had a ‘face-lift’.

There are many variations to the contemporary s’mores bar … whichever display you decide, remember the most important part is offering your guests a fun way to enjoy making their own s’mores. It gets your guests moving, chatting and makes for a great photo opportunity.

Interested in a more classic style s’mores bar? … Well, you can have everything set-up out side with a real fire burning for your guests to not only enjoyi roasting s’mores over, but to also use as a source of heat that is perfect for a chill, summer night.

If you don’t want to go overboard with idea you can consider adding s’mores to your dessert station or even offering them as a “groom’s cake”. You could also use a s’mores “make your own” box as your place-cards or as your thank you gift to your weddings guests. This is great way to give your guests the option of making their s’mores at the reception or taking them home. Whatever you choose, with s’mores you can’t lose!

TIMELESSEXPRESSIONS

Page 15: Simply Hers Bridal - Jan. 2012

TIMELESSEXPRESSIONS

Brought to Michigan by his heart for nature photography, and a love of the outdoors, more than 15 years ago Vince Butts, of Timeless Expressions Photography in Adrian, has found his niche with a more recent transition of merging nature with stunning wedding (bridal) photography. Vince defines his unique style of bridal photography “as a mix of nature with the elegance of the bride-mix the two together and you can do so much more with the photographs than the traditional church setting”.

Many of his locations feature not only nature, but also man made elements such as historic buildings or places with unusual architectural features such as a train bridge underpass, or once thriving brick factories. Interesting places and backgrounds whether made by nature or man- made they often offer a element of surprise as Vince says.

He loves finding and putting brides and bridal parties in” locations you would not expect to see a Bride in” Vince tends to notice what’s around him when on location- looking for the most unusual elements as places to take a variety of photographs. He defines his photographic style as “surreal, modern, & edgy.”

One of Vince’s signature styles incorporates the element of fashion with his “Ever After “ sessions- part fantasy, part decadent elegance, that lead to stunningly surreal shots of glamorous brides/bridal parties. He states he has no problem when brides or grooms ask him to do “wild stuff” making Timeless Expressions an ideal choice for the more adventurous bride.

Ever After sessions often cover both ends of the spectrum- from elaborate fantasy to “Trash the Dress” destruction and fun. “Ever After” and “Trash the Dress” sessions provide unique and fun ways for brides to enjoy more than just few hours with their gowns before storing them for years to come. These sessions allow Vince and his team to get many more unique and elegant photos in much more relaxed setting, rather than the busy day of the wedding ceremony. He has taken photos for brides who “Trashed the Dress” at a paint ball fight, jumped into a lake, among other interesting and fun filled sessions.

Vince likes to encourage brides to have a photo session just before the wedding- as he says Brides and Grooms at that time ‘exude an immaculate elegance which cannot be recaptured.” Typically he works as early as the wedding rehearsal to plan for lighting, and angles. Vince says that while shooting photos during a wedding ceremony or event “my mind is just constantly rolling, and it’s just a matter of manipulation to blend of all the elements-light, setting, subjects to make a picture that I take stand out”. Timeless Expressions photography

focus is “all about the bride- it’s her day” so they always have ‘eyes’ on the bride from multiple angles, so no moment are missed.

Vince uses a digital SLR Full Frame professional camera that is very effective in lower light situations, as is often the case with churches and reception halls. He has an assistant that carries lighting equipment to help him capture special moments- such as the bridal couple’s first dance with a halo effect. Vince stresses the importance of his female assistants- as not only are they trained to step in and assist him as the wedding photographer, they also serve to help make members of the wedding party, namely brides, and their bridesmaids less nervous with small details for getting just the right picture on their wedding day. In fact, in order to help any bridal session go more smoothly, he and his wife Anne (his primary assistant on assignment days) have developed an incredible “Wedding Kit” which is like the Swiss-Army knife of the Bridal Photographer- the Timeless Expressions team is prepared for any kind of wedding mishap and the kit includes such items as pins, crochet needles for buttons, pantyhose, needles & thread, buttons and any other item that might come in handy in case of minor unforeseen events.

One of his favorite times during the “wedding event session” is the time between the wedding and reception –after the formal ceremony, when the wedding party is little more relaxed and he can use his artistic creativity and really have some fun with personalities of the wedding parties and families. Vince has taken “Vegas style” mobster photos of groomsmen, and bridal parties jumping off old silos. Butts says that “nature and whatever the surrounding environment are my props”.

Timeless Expressions Photography defines their philosophy as “Artistic quality services to share for generations to come”. Vince says that he “loves the rush of doing wedding photography, the spontaneity of it, each session is always unique and different, you can only do it once and there’s no going back”. His best advice to brides on their big day “is to just go with the flow, just let it be and no matter what happens, in the end, you’re going to be happily married”, and to remember ‘it’s always all about the bride.”

Start shopping for engagement and wedding rings.

Prepare your provisional guest list to determine the size of your wedding.

Select your bridal party and wedding day assistant and discuss important events they will need to attend.

Decide on a ceremony site: Whether it’s a house of worship or a hotel lobby, you need to know where you will exchange vows.

Shop for your dress – It can take several months for your dress to arrive, and then you may need several fittings.

After you’ve found your dress, schedule your fittings and delivery date. Then select the bridesmaids’gowns.

Start the search for your wedding vendors. Photographers and Videographers get booked early, so start with them first.

Finalize the plans for your honeymoon.

Select and order your invitations.

Consider wedding insurance.

6 Months BeforePrepare all maps and directions for the ceremony and reception.

Chris Kitley owner of AGchocolates in Jackson, Michigan is a modern day Candy Man. He mixes life with chocolate and makes it all taste good. Kitely/AGChocolates specializes in custom, made to order, specialty chocolates.

Kitley was encouraged to follow his dream and take his first chocolate candy making class more than 15 years ago by his beloved great aunt, Aunt Gen , who inspired his company name. (AG). After taking that first course, Kitley was hooked and continued his candy making education at the Culinary School at Schoolcraft College in Livonia where he now shares his experience and expertise helping teach the classes.

Due to the nature of the material, working with chocolate is a fine art, but a medium that Kitley loves to use in his work. Kitely says that he’s worked around people and food his whole life and that the chocolate business is a natural fit for him.

AG chocolates has provided morsels for many kinds of festive events such as corporate parties with as many as 1500 employees, open houses, theater award ceremonies as well as their specialized focus on weddings.

For wedding events, Kitley and his team have made monogrammed favors as well as place settings using the colors of the wedding. He has even gone so far as to flavor the truffles to match or compliment the wedding cake.

A wedding event is the perfect opportunity for Kitley to showcase his talent to match the personality of the bride and groom in creative manner, offering a truffle to match every wedding personality. Recently he made suckers (lollipops) with the Bride and Groom’s photos on them for place settings.

AGchocolates also offers a premier chocolate fountain service for wedding receptions and other events. The AGchocolates team is present during the whole reception to help serve guests and to keep

the chocolate flowing smoothly. Kitley only uses the finest European chocolate in all the fountains, making them richly decadent. The quality of service offered during with chocolate fountain service (or any that Kitley offers) is both unparalleled and uniquely top-notch.

All of the chocolates Kitley makes are handmade, inside and out, in small batches using only the finest varieties of European Chocolates.Whether it’s Belgian Dark, Swiss Milk or French White, Kitley says that each kind of chocolate holds their own characteristics. Kitley uses his expertise in working with them to match the flavors in making his ganaches and truffles. Kitley says the techniques he uses in working with varieties of chocolates is very much like the way winemakers work with varieties of grapes to achieve the perfection of flavoring and taste.

Kitley makes all the truffle fillings by hand using custom ganaches (a ganache is an emulsion of Chocolate and Cream) with added spices or fresh fruit purees for flavoring. One of his more recent creations was a decadent pink peppercorn truffle infused with star anise. He also has an incredible flavor explosion curry truffle made with tropical fruit.

AGchocolates’ signature truffle is a raspberry ganache on the bottom with raspberry gel on the top, and coming in close second is the ever popular milk chocolate caramel ganache on the bottom, layered with another homemade caramel. These “are NOT your average chocolates” in that they have only a 4-6 week shelf life.

Brides and their wedding parties can arrange a tasting with Kitley for their event, where he will provide a selection of samples, and AGChocolates will work to customize any truffle for wedding events.

AGChocolates are available at “I’ve Been Framed”, located at 866 N. Wisner, in Jackson (Near Wal-Mart)

INSTRUCTIONSStep 1: Using the Homemade Vanilla Extract recipe make it at least two months prior to the wedding.

Step 2: Download Vanilla Labels at www.stylemepretty.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/vanilla_stickers2.pdf and print onto white sticker paper. Trim out each label. To get nice circles, take your time and use an x-acto knife and self-healing cutting mat – your fingers and table with thank you!

Step 3: Cut ribbon to 8” long and wrap around the neck of the bottle crossing in the cen-ter. Secure ribbon with a small piece of tape and then apply Vanilla label to the center of the bottle. Finish it off by snipping the ends of ribbon to a point.

Step 4: Once Vanilla is prepared and ready, fill the jars with vanilla using a funnel and cap with a cork. Vilolá! a delightful homemade favor for your guests!

INGREDIENTS

3 vanilla beans1 cup vodkaglass jar with tight fitting lid

METHOD

1 Use kitchen scissors or a sharp paring knife to cut lengthwise down each va-nilla bean, splitting them in half, leaving an inch at the end connected.

2 Put vanilla beans in a glass jar or bottle with a tight fitting lid (mason jars work well). Cover completely with the vodka.

3 Give the bottle a good shake every once in a while. Store in a dark, cool place for 2 months or longer.
