single covers analysis

With the Tinashe covers, I have selected the covers for her singles "All Hands on Deck" and "Pretend". In one, she is facing the camera with a straight expression while wearing a plain, black hoodie, indicating a sense of casualness. The background is blurred and grainy street setting in the daylight featuring a road and puddles. Immediately I can see a relation, between the casual outfit and the location. The street look compliments well with the street itself. The cover for "Pretend" is similar. The background features a run-down building wall, appealing to the working class demographic whom would not be able to relate to a more extravagant, upper class setting. There is a difference to the casual appearance of Tinashe in the first cover. With the "Pretend" cover, she looks more fashionable and ready with more make-up, curly, prominent hair and jewellery. Aspects of voyeurism is also present. The Tinashe logo is positioned large in the same place for both covers, in the middle of the cover stretching across the width of the cover. The song name is underneath the logo for the first cover but for the second cover the song name is smaller and angled above the artist name to the right, indicating a sense of edginess and difference to her other covers. While for the first cover it is a medium shot of Tinashe, the second cover features a full body shot from top to bottom,

While for the first cover it is a medium shot of Tinashe, the second cover features a full body shot from top to bottom, allowing her more stylish outfit to be shown off.

I can conclude that there are obvious conventions here; the artist logo and its positioning, prominence of artist on the cover and an eye-catching background. After analysing the next two covers and seeing if there are similarities, I will decide which conventions I will use.

For Ariana Grande's covers, there is more simplicity but numerous similarities as well. For example, there is a medium shot image for the artist, featured prominently on the cover in a similar fashion to Tinashe’s covers. There is consistency in the text style and font of the artist name. On “The Way” cover, the artist name and song name is positioned the same as in the “All Hands on Deck” cover.

However the backgrounds of the Grande covers are the most obvious difference. Unlike Tinashe’s covers, they do not feature an actual setting but instead feature a more plain background with either a purple colour or a baby blue colour.

These similarities thus serve as conventions. Our artist cover will follow the artist name and song title design and position as identified in Tinashe’s and Ariana Grande’s covers while maintaining a simplistic background but isn’t as plain as Grande’s.
