HIGHLIGHTS OF THECOE
o CSUN’s teacher education program was selected as one of the original four in the nation to receive a $5 million grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York to develop model teacher preparation programs
o COE received a gift of $7 million from the Eisner Foundation to create the Center for Teaching and Learning
o NCATE (National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education) accreditationo Of the 83 University credential programs in the State of
California, only 21 (25%) have met NCATE accreditationo NCATE accreditation may make it easier to receive
certification in another stateo After the accreditation visit in Nov. 2009, NCATE
commended our students, faculty, and assessment system.

THE SINGLE SUBJECT
PRELIMINARY CREDENTIAL
o A valid license is required to teach in a California public school.
o This program meets the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) standards (SB 2042), which includes an English Learner authorization.
o Upon program completion candidate will receive a K-12 authorization for teaching in a departmental setting. Typically, single subject teachers are assigned to classes in grades 6-12, though art, music, and physical education teachers are placed grades K-12
o An induction program is required to obtain the clear credential; clear credential recommendations are made by school districts, county programs or in the instance of private school teachers, approved university programs.

- Receive a passing score on the appropriate CTC-approved subject matter exam: CSET (all subtests must be passed)
OR
- Completion of a CTC-approved subject matter program at a university or college

REQUIREMENTS FORFORMAL ADMISSION:BASIC SKILLS REQUIREMENT
Must complete one of the following options prior to applying for formal admission:
Option 1 - Attempt the (CBEST) California Basic Educational Skills Test
Option 2 - Passage of CSET: Multiple Subject AND attempt the CSET: Writing Skills Tests
Option 3 – Passage of CSU Placement Tests (EAP/ELM/EPT)
Option 4 - Approved Basic Skills Exam from Another State
Note: For Spring 2011 the Basic Skills Requirement must be MET for admission.

o Information Session Verification Form
o Document at least 45 hours of early field experience that is appropriate for the student population with whom you will be working:o completed within last 5 yearso complete the Early Field Experience Verification Form and get an
appropriate signature
o Two letters of recommendation
o Statement of objectives:o at least one page but no longer than 5 pages in length

REQUIREMENTS FORFORMAL ADMISSION:TRANSCRIPTS
o All transcripts o One set for the University must be official and sealed
o One set for the Credential Office must be official and sealed
o CSUN transcript may be unofficial
o List all colleges/universities and years attended on the Transcripts Form
o GPA:
oat least 2.67 in all baccalaureate and post-baccalaureate course work, OR
oat least 2.75 in the last 60 semester units attempted

Apply for a Certificate of Clearance in three easy steps
Step One:
o Go to Credential Office website and click on “Forms and Flyers”, download Certificate of Clearance and follow instructions carefully.
o Request Live Scan service at an agency such as:The CSUN Public Safety Office lobby located at 18111 NordhoffStreet, Department of Public Safety Building, Prairie and Darby Streets. Call the office at 818-677-2113 for times and availability. Current Department of Justice, and FBI fees are $73.00 .

Step Three:
- Wait a week and then go to www.ctc.ca.gov- Click on “Look Up a Credential”- Click on “Look Up a Credential” again- Click on “teaching credential holders and applicants”- Insert your social security number and birth date at the prompt, and check your status.
Once the Certificate Of Clearance appears as “granted”, print the screen under “credential held” and include with your credential program application packet
