tory organs. Direct Treatment by means of the Howe apparatus accomplishes
this end."
Prof. DAVIS, of Chicago, says: " I am convinced that art has done little more
than palliate the disease speaking of Consumption and unless diseases of the
nose, throat and bronchial tubes, which are but the forerunners of Consumption,
are seriously regarded, and their course cut short by the use of medicine which can be administered direct, the disease must go on as before, the most dreadful scourge of the world."
Sir ALEXANDER CRICHTON, M. D., F. R. S., London, in a recent communication to the faculty of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of London, which was pub- lished in the London Lancet, says: "That Nasal Catarrh and Bronchitis of the chronic type cannot be cured by medicines which pass through the stomach, the whole history of our art proves to us, but that it can be, and is effectually treated by the new method of Direct Application we all know; therefore, I assert that the old practice must inevitably give way to the new, as we see it is doing, slowly, yet surely." Sir JAMES CLARK, M. D., in his work on Pulmonary Diseases, says: " The total inefficiency of all means hitherto employed (by the stomach) is sufficient incitement to us to seek for some other means of curing this class of diseases, in the early stages of the malady. Dr. O. Baxter Howe's ingeniously constructed apparatus supplies a longfelt want in the medical profession."
Editor of London Lancet says: " The utility of local medication of the air pass- ages with various medicines, is extensively recognized by the profession. The want of a proper instrument for administering the remedy is often the only reason why the great benefit which such applications are capable of affording is withheld from the patient. Dr. O. Baxter Howe's apparatus for administering remedies direct to the diseased surfaces of the air passages supplies a long felt want in the Medical Profession."

PREFACE.
f jC\E herewith present the Third issue of the CHICAGO BLUE BOOK, v V the publication of which we undertook, at the solicitation of many of our friends and patrons a little over two years ago. We wish to thank our lady patrons for the consideration they have shown our efforts, and trust that this volume will retain the high place in their favor, which we have won, and will endeavor to hold.
Neither time nor money have been spared to make the work as com- plete and valuable as possible; but, notwithstanding this, the difficulty attending the compiling of such a book can be easily appreciated. We therefore trust that any omissions will be brought to our notice, that they may be corrected in future. We keep the entire work standing in type, that such corrections can be made promptly ; in this way we hope to make the Chicago Blue Book as nearly perfect as it is possible to make such a volume.
As we have stated heretofore, the title, "BLUE BOOK," is simply a name given the work on account of its blue cover. It does not refer to blue blood, as many people suppose. Webster's definition of Blue Book is as follows: "BLUE BOOK. A parliamentary publication, so called from its blue paper cover, such being commonly used ; also, a book containing a list of fashionable addresses"
We do not claim the BLUE BOOK to be either a City Directory or an absolutely Elite Directory ; neither do we pretend to pass upon the social or financial standing of the parties whose names are contained therein ; but it is simply a compilation of thirty thousand names of the most promi- nent householders of Chicago, and suburbs within a radius of thirty miles, published in the most convenient form for reference by our lady patrons.
5
6 PREFACE.
While retaining all the old features, such as Calling Days in the Street List, and Summer Residences in Alphabetical List, we have added very materially to our Miscellaneous Information, Club Lists, etc.
We shall always be pleased to receive any suggestions from our lady patrons whereby we can enhance the value of this work to them, or any information in regard to Social or Literary Clubs and Associations, which we have not already incorporated in our volume. The data of this work has not been compiled from circulars or information out of other Direc- tories, but experienced men, particularly adapted for such work, have been assigned to each locality, and the greatest care has been used in selecting these names. In order to issue the book before the Holidays, it is neces- sary for us to commence our canvass early in September. We would therefore deem it a great favor if those absent from their homes after October 1st would send us the information which they wish inserted, as it is not safe to take it from servants, or anyone except the parties interested.

E would respectfully call attention to the fact that we are GENERAL AGENTS FOR ALL STEAMSHIP LINES to all
parts of the WORLD, and have unequaled facilities for giving our patrons the very best accommodations to be had. We would lay particular stress upon the fact that we are not compelled to book our pass- engers on any one line, having in our office CABIN PLANS OF /VLL STEAMERS ; should room or berth not be satisfactory by one steamer, we caneasily transfer to that of another line without additional expense to the passenger. We number among our patrons some of our very best citizens, to whom we are at liberty to refer personally. Any who con- template a trip abroad can rest assured that every attention will be given, and unprejudiced advice as to lines and steamers.
