Kolkata:AsouthKolkatagirl,whohasconvertedfromHinduismtoIslam,andhersisterwhoisalsokeentoconvert,werebeatenupallegedlybytheassociatesofthelocalcouncillor.Thegirlshavealsoallegedpoliceinaction.

VinitaShaw,25,aresidentof57/2BBondelRoad,adoptedIslaminDecemberlastyear.Hernewname,videanaffidavitbyafirstclassmagistrateis,TaibaKhatoon(TheIndianExpresspossessesacopyoftheaffidavit).Hersister,18-year-oldPoojaShaw,too,expressedherwishtofollowsuitlastweek.

Theconversionapparentlydidnotgodowntoowellwiththeirneighbours,who,onJune8,beatupthetwosistersandtheirfamily,includinghermotherandbrother,withbricksandrods.

Weareaverypoorfamily.Myfatherisparalyticandbed-ridden.Thesepeoplestartedafightonthepretextthatwedirtytheplacetoomuch.Butwhentheystartedbeatingus,theysaidunmentionablethingsasIhaveconverted,saidVinita.Shealsoallegedthatbothsisterswereabusedandmolested.

Vinitaalsoclaimedharassmentatthehandsofthepolice.IwenttothepolicestationwithawrittencomplaintagainstAsimBera,TapasBera,AbhishekMalakar,KrishnaRay,AkashRay,ManojSingh,BikasSinghandBirjuPaswanbutinvestigatingofficerDDRoyChowdhurytoreitupandwroteithimself.HeevenrefusedtogivemeacopyofthecomplaintandwhenIinsisted,heaskedtheotherofficertheretogiveittome,referringtomewithunmentionablenames,shesaid.
