Daylight systems for well-being and efficiencyWithout sunlight there’s no life, and without light there’s no well-being. Daylight can be optimally implemented with innovative daylight systems from Siteco. These make use of the physical laws of reflection, absorption and refraction to illuminate rooms perfectly and also to avoid excessive warmth. Energy consumption for artificial lighting and air conditioning is reduced and room comfort increases.

4 Daylight systems

Daylight for more health and well-beingNatural light from the sun is not only an inestimable energy source, but in addition to water and nourishment it’s one of the most important fundaments of human life. This well-known fact is underlined by a compre-hensive, systematic survey carried out by the Ilmenau Technical University in Germany. Dr. Joachim Fisch has brought together more than 700 scientifi c articles concerning the theme of light and health. For example: daylight enables the formation of vitamin D3 that promotes the lime construction of bones and metabolic processes. It also improves resistance to infections, increases physical and mental

performance, enhances the supply of oxygen to the organs and prevents premature symptoms of tiredness. Suffi cient daylight chokes production of the sleeping hormone melatonin and reduces the danger of seasonal aff ective disorder. Instead of this, production of the hormone Serotonin is increased that improves the sense of well-being.Large windows support these positive eff ects by allowing views to the outside, and they also create a feeling of distance and a pleasant sense of space. They ease orientation according to times of day and year and also according to the weather.

Sunlight... Daylight...

• tans skin with its shortwave UV radiation. It also fades colours

• has high luminance values that cause glare and refl ections on objects

• with its longwave radiation it heats up rooms and creates greenhouse eff ects

• is the ideal light for viewing• covers the complete colour spectrum. Only with

daylight do we see objects with their natural colours• is able when correctly controlled to homogeneously

illuminate rooms in a unique way. This is precisely what daylight systems from Siteco do

The radiation usually allowed to enter via insulation glass falls upon objects and is transformed to long wave radiation (far fi eld infrared). This can no longer penetrate through the glass. The energy remains in the room and the room temperature increases.

The control of radiation with daylight systems: highly refl ective layers, for example of ultra-pure aluminium, reduce the

transformation of shortwave to long-wave radiation. At the same time they ensure light guidance into the depths of the room. Their total energy transmittance is very low. In comparison: Total energy transmittance rate of: Standard double glazing unit g = 0.72prismatic system g = 0.15 micro sun shielding louvre g = 0.14

Daylight systems use the advantages of daylight and compensate for its disadvantages. This double benefit is provided by the modern daylight systems from Siteco. In contrast to other solar protection systems, they allow the ingress of daylight and avoid darkening effects. At the same time they provide glare protec-tion from direct sunlight as usually experienced with insulated windows. Without protection, such high illuminance levels lead to increased stress loads, error

rates and tiredness for the occupants, particularly where computer workstations are involved. In contrast, daylight systems improve the distribution of daylight in the room, thus also allowing more flexibility with the arrangement of workstations. Whilst simultaneously, reducing heat gain within rooms in summer months, thereby significantly reducing the air conditioning and cooling loads within a building

Twin benefits from daylight systems

The principle of reflectionAll Siteco daylight systems are designed to allow ’cool’ diffused daylight to penetrate the building, whilst reflecting the high thermal content of direct light back into the atmosphere. The basis for this is a directional dependent glazing panel. The blocked area is oriented towards the direct sunlight path and the allowable areas of the panel towards the diffused sky. Both prismatic and louvre systems are available for optimum results and these can be either fitted within a glazed system or installed in front of them. The orientation and construction of the chosen system depends upon the building’s location and geographical alignment.

Prismatic systems feature a blocking area in which all light entering is reflected, whereas light from other angles is allowed to pass through.

Louvre systems take advantage of their specific form and high quality coating. Sunlight from pre-defined angles is not allowed to pass through.

Outstanding light as a combination of natural and artificial lightAs much daylight as possible, as little artificial light as required – this is the principle that increasingly governs convincing lighting concepts. This not only takes advantage of the benefits of natural light but also implements artificial lighting as the perfect supplement. Controlled steplessly and with good colour rendering, corresponding luminaires add as much light as needed for specific lighting tasks.

Siteco sees itself as an expert partner for architects and lighting consultants, offering a complete product spectrum for such lighting solutions. This includes innovative daylight systems and high quality luminaires with specifically suitable lamp technology. This garantees superior lighting results that satisfy the highest demands in terms of work-station lighting.

Intelligent sensor technology

Sensor systems increase the benefits of modern luminaires. For example, integral brightness and presence sensors in office luminaires such as Novaluna® S and Novaluna® P ensure constant lighting levels. Such sensors also automatically switch luminaires off (with a timed delay) as soon as nobody is in the room.

Using daylight means saving energy, because daylight is free and is often available in suffi cient quantities. On this basis the theme of the resource-friendly implementation of energy is becoming ever more important. After all, lighting in many office buildings represents more than a quarter of total energy consumption. With efficient technology, such expenditures can can be drastically reduced. Daylight systems are the first important building

block for effi ciency. They aid in cutting requirements for artifi cial lighting and therefore sustainably reduce electricity costs. A second effi ciency building block is selecting the right luminaire system. Whether it’s LED luminaires, highly effi cient T16 lamps or other technology, Siteco off ers convincing solutions to designers. A third building block for effi ciency is balanced lighting management systems to completely exploit energy saving potential.

Integral planning for optimal benefitsSiteco has been an international partner for premium quality lighting solutions for decades, and architectural conditions and functional requirements are considered as part of complete projects. The planning expertise of architectural and lighting design offices is brought together with the photometric experience of Siteco that is renowned across the world. All of this is aimed at optimal customer benefits according to individual specifications and under cosideration of customer needs, along with the implementation of special products of the highest quality.

The ALDI future store in Rastatt, Germany, is exemplary for this approach.

The task• Energy consumption to be

reduced to 50% of a standard store• Protection of goods from damaging

UV radiation to be guaranteed• Roof domes should appear largely

transparent to ensure visual contact to the outside

• Goods should appear with natural colours

• Sales-promoting light that transforms shopping into an experience

The solution• The sales space of approximately

1000 square metres, was fitted with 28 uniformly distributed roof windows, each measuring 4 square metres in size and equipped with micro sun shielding louvres.

• The natural daylight creates mean illuminance levels of up to 850 lux according to weather conditions and time of day.

• The use of luminaires for general lighting could be reduced to the late afternoon/evening hours according to the season of the year and weather.

• Light sensors measure the available illuminance. Ballasts convert the sensor signals to suit the specifically selected dimmable luminaires equipped with special shop reflectors. The luminaires are dimmed down most of the time.

• The result is a high quality light atmosphere and indoor climate. Foodstuffs appear appetising, and packaged goods appear with their natural colours.

Four solutions for greater comfort and less energy consumptionThe architectural requirements are diverse, as are the individual specifications. Siteco thus offers four different systems for solar and glare protection. Our experts gladly design suitable systems together with lighting consultants, architects and building owners.

FunctionThe transparent and uncoated prism plates of acrylic glass ensure solar protection for facades and glass roofs. The system prevents heat radiation from the sun and allows diffuse light to pass into the interior. The prismatic plates track the position of the sun with microprocessors and motor technology.

Function The transparent prismatic plates of acrylic glass are individually cut and fitted within double glazing units. Therefore they ensure solar protection for glass roofs with a high transmission factor for diffuse daylight. One prism edge is coated with purest aluminium to get a larger blockage range. The stationary prism system can also be used for controlled light guidance in the room.

Moveable prismatic plates off er solar protection and control the daylight: orthogonally incident sunlight is refl ected while daylight entering from other directions is guided into the room. The uncoated prismatic plates are arranged as lamellae and installed to building facades and onto roofs. These reduce excessive luminance in the window areas, create ergonomic illumination at workstations

and a general comfortable atmosphere. A micro-processor controls not only the alignment of the plates according to the position of the sun but also processes weather data; with cloudy skies the lamellae are automatically set to ensure maximum light transmission and view. If required, the automatic control can be supplemented with manual command inputs.

Moveable prism systemThe fl exible solar protection and daylight system

On facades and roofsMoveable prismatic plates can be installed vertically to facades or horizontally upon glazed courtyards or glass roofs. They consist of highly transparent acrylic glass (PMMA), are uncoated and weather-resistant.

Robust and moveableThe prismatic plates are rigidly fi xed to a frame construction via shafts. The shafts have mechanical and electronic tracking, controlled by a microprocessor.

Always at the right angleThe microprocessor controls the lamellae automatically according to the position of the sun. Thus the sun’s rays always impact at a 90 degree angle on the rear of the prismatic plates and are then refl ected. Light entering from other directions brightens the complete room depth.

Moveable prism system Casualty hospital, Linz, Austria The hospital rooms of the six-storey bed wing in the casualty hospital in Linz have windows over the complete room height in a south-westerly direction. The moveable prismatic solar protection has been installed in the upper area of the balconies in front of the rooms. In summer, the three superimposed prismatic lamellae protect the complete glazed facade. In winter the radiation of the low sun enters below the prismatic lamellae into the depths of the patients’ rooms. On cloudy days the prismatic plates are rotated to a horizontal position, and in this way the guidance function of the prisms can be specifically used for reflection of light into the interior.

In the glazed roof of the entrance area, a micro sun shielding louvre protects the interior from excessive heat.

The prismatic plates are fixed to the rotatable steel shafts with aluminium brackets; linear drive motors are implemented for motion.

Stationary prism system not only use light control via their prisms, but are further enhanced by one prism edge being coated with specular ultra-pure aluminium (AL 99.99). This enlarges the blockage range and completely eliminates direct sunlight, allowing use especially in inclined glass facades and roofs. The plates are cut to suit and installed in insulated window panes, roofl ights and glazed roofs. This guarantees protection

from humidity and soiling. The technology is adapted via various prism structures and the orientation of the prismatic plates to the diverse demands in terms of geographic location, inclination of glazing and orientation of the building. Prismatic systems are mainly implemented as solar protection. They can however also be used for light control, and both functions can be combined with ease.

Stationary prism systemOptimal solar protection and perfect light control

Prisms with various anglesThe basis of stationary prism systems are prismatic plates of 8N acrylic glass (injection-moulded). These are smooth on one side and feature a prismatic structure on the other. Various prism angles are available.

Use as solar protectionThe fl at plate side is oriented to the outside: sunlight entering at right angles is thrown back by the oblique prism edges. The aluminium layer on one prism edge also refl ects light rays from fl atter angles.

Use for light controlHere the refraction of the light on two non-parallel surfaces (prisms) is used to guide the light into the corners of the room. Glare is avoided with this method.

Stationary prism system Bavarian Parliament, Munich Since its refurbishment, the plenary hall fulfills the contemporary, functional demands of a modern cabinet room. In addition, innovative technology in terms of lighting and air-conditioning achieve energy savings of 60 percent. Thanks to stationary prism systems, daylight has become the defining element of the space that was formerly illuminated only with artificial light. Depending on the intensity of daylight, infinitely variable switchable sources of light create optimal lighting conditions. The use of state-of-the-art technology for lamps, reflectors, ballasts and control system results in the best possible matching of daylight and artificial light.

Daylight systems

Micro sun shielding louvres consist of plastic louvres featuring specular ultra-pure aluminium, with outstanding reflective properties. Specially formed lateral and longitudinal lamellae define the blocking and transmission ranges for light. During installation the closed lamella surface is aligned to the south and the louvre aperture to the north, thus causing direct sunlight to be reflected while intensive zenith light and diffuse daylight is allowed to pass unimpeded into the room. In this way a high level of ergonomic

light is achieved with precise colour rendering. The micro sun shielding louvre creates a pleasant room atmosphere, and is perceived as a fine network structure, simultaneously offering viewers a free view of the outside. The highly sensitive louvres need to be completely protected from humidity and dirt particles. In order to offer a comprehensive guarantee, the systems are always delivered in functional state, installed in double or triple glazing.

Micro sun shielding louvreSolar protection with a clear view

Rectangular louvre formThe form of the individual louvres is rectangular. Two systems are available with variously inclined main lamellae. The louvres of ASA (injection-moulded) are specular with ultra-pure aluminium (AL 99.99). Slight colour variations may occur, as with vapourised double glazing.

Optimal for lightly inclined roofsMicro sun shielding louvres have been designed for roof glazing and their application is optimised for lightly inclined roof constructions. While the blocking area reflects direct sun- light, the highly pure aluminium layer guides the diffuse light almost completely without light spill into the room.

Micro sun shielding louvreMozarteum, Salzburg, Austria During the refurbishment of the Mozarteum Music College, the building was extended with a transparent hall. This serves as a foyer and auditorium. Its roof glazing equipped with micro sun shielding louvres transforms it into an entrance area and multifunctional zone flooded with light. Daylight can be used throughout the day, and this cuts costs for lighting of the hall. The peripheral exercise rooms equipped with glazed intermediate walls also benefit. Firstly, electricity used here for artificial lighting can be saved, and secondly the micro sun shielding louvre prevents direct glare from sunlight in the exercise rooms.

28 Daylight systems

CombiSol is a further development of the micro sun shielding louvre. It is the first louvre system to com-bine high quality solar protection with reliable glare protection, because CombiSol completely eliminates glare from direct sunlight. The system thus fulfills maximum optical requirements for example for offices and control rooms. The special feature is the construction of the system with two areas: only light from a northern direction passes through the outer into the inner layer. This is

formed like the specular louvre of a luminaire, and controls and guides the light at an angle of less than 65 degrees into the interior. Even though the view towards the outside is limited by the system, the bridge to the outside is not completely disrupted. The high quality specular louvre takes on the colour of the background and does not modify the changing colours of daylight. As such, viewers can enjoy the changing weather and light atmospheres without glare and with an optimal room climate.

CombiSolMaximum solar and glare protection in one

Louvre with a hexagonal constructionThe CombiSol elements feature a honeycomb form on their upper surface. They are constructed with ASA (injection-moulded) and are rendered specular with an extremely thinly applied layer of ultra-pure aluminium (AL 99.99). Here slight colour variations may occur, as with vapourised insulation glass.

Double light controlCombiSol takes effect on two levels. The hexagonal form of the upper layer represents both a blocking and transmisson range: direct sunlight is completely reflected and diffuse daylight is allowed to enter. This light is guided into the second layer, and the room is thus supplied homogeneously with diffuse light.

Planning Customised solutions for all buildingsHigh quality lighting solutions are individual solutions; each building and each room has different conditions and places varying requirements upon lighting and daylight technology. This is why we develop individual daylight solutions for each single building. Results from theoretical calculations and practical measuring procedures flow into the planning. This includes for example information about the precise sun position at specific locations, the position of the building, its

alignment and of course its architecture. Simulations such as those of the Bartenbach LichtLabor can supplement computer planning. Here natural sky conditions such as brightness, light distribution, colour temperature and solar situation can be perfectly simulated. Rooms can thus be experienced with real daylight situations, brightness values and surfaces in 3D. All for the purpose of individual concepts and perfect lighting solutions.

Simulating the individual, perfect lighting solution

The complex interplay of all room and light components can be simulated via computer programs. Here the modification of daylight intensity and solar position is taken into account. As such, any luminance distribution can be displayed in quick succession. This in turn gives information about possible room layouts in the future.
