1 Key: B = Band. D = Descriptor. L = Lisan (Oracy/Language Arts). B = Bacaan (Reading) T = Tulisan (Writing)

2 To achieve Band B3 DL1, children need to demonstrate understanding of spoken directions (see Competency C B3 DL1b), in addition to demonstrating understanding of

teacher’s instructions (See Competency H, B3 DL1a). 3 Band B3 DB2 requires children to “read and understand sentences in linear and non-linear texts.” Since no Year 1 non-linear texts contain whole sentences rather than

phrases (B3 DB1), this competency is deemed to be evidentially complete by children’s reading sentences in either fiction or non-fiction linear texts (description or story).

There are many types of non-linear texts. Therefore, you need to choose the descriptors that apply to the non-linear text (e.g. poster) you are teaching. Square brackets [poster] show which descriptors apply to the text. 11

11

KSSR SJK Year 1 does not explicitly require children to read non-linear texts (as a whole – it does require them to read words, phrases and sentences within them. However, SJK Y1 Standard 3.3.1 requires children to “create simple non-linear texts,” for which the ability to read such a text first is surely a pre-requisite.

Assessing children on this band

should be on a volunteer, individual rather than compulsory basis.25

Teachers will need to allocate time to assess any child who ELECTS to be assessed on this competency. Do NOT conduct this assessment on all children as this standard requires Year 1 children to read independently and therefore sets them up to fail. 18

A band number at the top of a table indicates that this band can ONLY be achieved when ALL descriptors in this table are met.

KSSR SJK Year 1 Standard 4.2.1 requires children to demonstrate that they can handle books appropriately. If you use instructions to teach this skill, you will achieve this KSSR Standard. This standard is the only one not mandated by RELTmax and its implementation of Standards-Based Assessment.

This task is optional. It does not have to be done to achieve Competency I.
