Introduction from NAISC Skellig Kerry Diaspora Network

NAISC Skellig Kerry Diaspora Network is a network of people from, or associated with the Skellig coastal region of the Iveragh peninsula (Uibh Ráthach). We live in the area or anywhere else on the globe and we are committed to securing a bright future for the communities of this unique place. This Region of Uíbh Ráthach (Iveragh), this Skellig Coast in the South West of Ireland, has always been a Place where there is great Meas* on Learning and Knowledge and working together. When you look at the physical geography of this region, you'll understand why this Culture of Learning is embedded here for Millennia. Here on the Iveragh peninsula, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on 3 sides with the highest mountains in Ireland running down its spine, our communities were defined and our people shaped by those mountains and that Ocean. For our communities to survive here through the Millennia, we had to understand deeply and react quickly to the land and the ocean and to pass on those learnings down through the generations. And we needed to work together to thrive, to pool resources - particularly our energy and skills. We had the Meitheal^ long before the word "team-work" appeared on bookshelves! The ancient archaeological sites that abound in our Region stand testament to the complex engineering skills, ambition, ingenuity and tenacity of Our People. This is exemplified by the UNESCO, World Heritage Site of the 6th Century monastery on Skellig Michael, which stood as a place of learning and pilgrimage and was known across Europe and the world throughout the middle-ages. Our People have always been resourceful, adaptable and resilient and in the 21st century those traits have never been more important. This Place is where Oisín and Na Fianna of our mythology roamed, our townland names tell us that. This is the Place where communications across the Atlantic were reduced from 2 weeks to 2 minutes via the first Transatlantic Cable between Valentia Island and Newfoundland, heralding the start of a communications revolution that would turn the world into the global village we know today. Knowledge and an openness to Learning were vital for survival in this region then, as now, and with advances in technology and communications, our Meas on Learning remains the key to unlocking the natural potential so that Our People and communities thrive and continue to flourish and we can reverse the depletion of our strongest asset – our young people. Here in Uíbh Ráthach, on this Skellig Coast, there is time & space to Observe, to Notice, and to Create. In our landscape and amongst our people there are openings for inspiration and innovation that you haven't even dreamed of! NAISC Skellig Kerry Diaspora Network The word "Naisc" means "links" in the Irish language. NAISC Skellig Kerry Diaspora Network is a virtual diaspora network. The members of the network either live, grew up in or have links to the Skellig Region of Kerry (from Kells to Castlecove), which is also known as Uíbh Ráthach. With global connectivity the world is small and we work together with people at home and afar to do some of the "heavy lifting” to drive and support projects at home in this special region that reared and educated us. We all have a great loyalty to this Region and this place has shaped us and those before us. It shapes our heritage, culture and traditions and the deeds we do in the world.

KU Leuven, Belgium. With senior leadership roles spanning the United Nations to Silicon Valley and the University of California, Lon Addison has over 30 years of experience in strategic planning, research, and management of information technology in heritage, culture & the arts, design & engineering, and more. For over a decade he was Special Advisor for World Heritage at UNESCO, and has led field documentation and training projects at heritage sites from Cambodia to Myanmar, Peru to Egypt, and Belize to Bhutan. He is President of the International VSMM Society, VP of ICOMOS' International Scientific Committee for Interpretation & Presentation and on the boards of multiple philanthropies, non-profits, and academic projects.

Susan Jeffords is the chief academic officer at University of Washington, Bothell; responsible for advancing the academic and scholarly life of the campus. Since embarking on a new chapter in Higher Education, Jonathan continues to explore ways that technology, partnerships, and strategic thinking can work to enhance people’s lives. Jonathan’s current role provides leadership for cross-campus initiatives that advance and support UWB's academic mission and goals. He works with industry partners, other universities throughout the world, and philanthropic organizations to create opportunities for the students at University of Washington campus. Dr Gayil Nalls • Director, World Sensorium (UNESCO Award

Media Institute, UCD Dublin. Daria Dorosh, is a co-founding member of A.I.R. Gallery, integrates traditional art with new media, fashion, and technology. After 36-years as a fashion design professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology, NY, she became a researcher with SMARTlab, UK, and completed her PhD thesis, Patterning: The Informatics of Art and Fashion in 2007. Fashion is a rich repository of social, historic, and personal information, which she integrates into her art practice and explores through her company. In 2011, she received ArtTable’s 30th Anniversary Artist Honours Award for work that goes beyond studio practice. She is active in the arts and in environmental groups in the Upper Delaware River Valley, NY, where she has her studio. Her 20th one-person exhibition, DEEP Play: imaginary realms and comfort objects for grown-ups, (October 2012) showed digital prints and portable textile sculpture for grown-ups.

Diamond is an internationally celebrated data visualization, wearable technology, mobile media researcher, media artist, designer and historian. She is an appointee of the Order of Ontario and the Royal Canadian Academy of Artists and a recipient of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for service to Canada. She is the winner of the 2013 GRAND NCE Digital Media Pioneer Award. Diamond served on the 2011-2012 Council of the Canadian Academies’ expert panel on the State of Science & Technology in Canada.

She founded the Mobile Experience Innovation Centre; was co-principal investigator of the Centre for Information Visualization/Data Driven Design; theme leader for Data Visualization for iCity which focused on Big Data and transportation, is a member of the BRAIN Alliance, in visual analytics. She has held funding from the Social Science and Humanities Research Council, Canada Foundation for Innovation, MITACS, the National Sciences and Engineering Research Council, Ontario Centres for Excellence and the Canada Council for the Arts.

Since her appointment in 2005 she has led OCAD University’s evolution to a full university, helping to build its transdisciplinary and research-creation research capacity and infrastructure, integrate STEM subjects, create its Digital Futures Initiative, launch the Indigenous Visual Culture Program, strengthen its approach to inclusion, and grow its undergraduate and graduate programs. Before her tenure at OCAD University she was Artistic Director and Executive Producer of Media and Visual Art, Executive Director of Research at The Banff Centre (1992 – 2005), founder of the Banff International Curatorial Institute and founded and led the Banff New Media Institute, a digital media research centre, incubator and think tank.

Centre of Ireland Lizbeth is Professor of Inclusive Design for Education and Chair of Creative Technology Innovation at University College Dublin, where she is an Executive Board member of the Innovation Academy. She was nominated to Chair the Royal Irish Academy Social Sciences Committee in 2012. Lizbeth founded the SMARTlab in its first iteration in 1993 at the BBC, and has developed the award-winning practice-based PhD Programme through the institute, along with the associated MAGIC Multimedia and Games Innovation Centre and Gamelab, which Lizbeth designed with industry collaborators as a prime knowledge transfer space in the London docklands. Lizbeth has worked with the Skellig Coast Region to establish a PhD Hub here, with locally based candidates researching the Region itself whilst still living here. Lizbeth and her teams specialise in developing ground-up technology solutions for people of all levels of cognitive and physical ability, from mainstream learners of all ages to ‘special’ and ‘gifted’ learners and lifelong learners in the developed and developing worlds. In all her work, she applies a universal design method to practice-based innovation to transform lives through providing unlimited access to education and tools for creative expression. Prior to joining UCD, Lizbeth was Director of Research for Futurelab Education, directing Lord David Puttnam’s research and production teams to establish innovative platforms for the future of education in a context of global change. She is known as an expert in Digital Inclusion, including learning models for communities at risk. She is an award-winning advocate of community-based ethical learning and teaching models using interactive tools and games to inspire and engage learners of all ages. She specialises in working with people who do not have physical voices (whether due to disability, injury, illiteracy, or other social/political factors), enabling the use of new creative technologies for expression vocally, in writing, and with movement and music. In 2003 she won the Lifetime Achievement Award for Volunteer Service to Women and Children, awarded live in Times Square NY. In 2008 she was selected to the two top prizes from industry by the Blackberry Rim Innovation Awards team: Outstanding Woman in Academia and Public Sphere, and Top Woman in Technology. In 2015 she was named one of the World’s Top 50 Social Entrepreneurs.

Prof Deborah Richards

Professor Richards’ career as an academic began in 1999. Prior to this time, starting in 1980, she worked in the IT industry in roles ranging from data control officer, operator, analyst/programmer, manager and consultant working first with mainframes and then minis (IBM S/34/36). She had her own IT business solutions company from 1986-1999. She has started work as a bank clerk when she finished the Higher School Certificate (top 5% of state) in 1978. In terms of academic qualifications and background, mostly recently (2010) Prof Richards completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (Leadership and Management). In 1999 she completed a Doctor in Philosophy from the Faculty of Engineering, School of Computer Science and Engineering in the field of Artificial Intelligence. Her PhD topic led on from her Master's Degree thesis "The Adaptation of Traditional Expert Systems to Provide 'What-If' Processing in the Decision Support System Style". This thesis was part of a Master of Applied Science in Information Studies at Charles Sturt University - Riverina.

Dr Halina Gottlieb • Founder/Director, Digital Heritage Center, Sweden. • Co-founder of DIHA R&D Cluster, Singapore The “Digital Heritage Center Sweden” is dedicated to help museums, galleries and cultural heritage institutions become more engaged with their audience in situ and online. They create products and services that encourage the use of new technology and by enabling knowledge exchange between museum and heritage professionals, academics, researchers and creative professionals. “Digital Heritage Center Sweden” operates within innovations in the cultural sector, consultation and concept development in the digital cultural heritage and associated activities. Dr Gottlieb earned her practice-based PhD with SMARTlab at UCD in 2010. is also the co-founder of Digital Intangible Heritage of Asia (DIHA), a research cluster built to connect intangible and tangible heritage through digital media. The aim is to capture the vibrant cultural and linguistic fusion of Singapore through interdisciplinary lenses. Anita McKeown PhD, FRSA is an itinerant artist, curator and researcher working at the intersection of art, equitable spatial planning and technology. Using a range of tactics; situated arts practice, publication, and education, she works to facilitate the co-creation of locally scaled interventions that are context-responsive and ecologically sensitive. Working across artforms, digital and analogue, the projects arise from extended relationships with people and place to contribute to and encourage knowledge production and transfer for systemic self-organisation and resilience. Through place and project-based learning, the residency focuses on the development of young people's skills by connecting them to the many assets of the Region in a meaningful way; encouraging them to actively engage with their surroundings by inspiring ideas and potential for their future on the Region. Anita’s research interests include Open Source Culture and Technology (ethical and ecological implications) and STEAM education. In 2016 she developed the Beautiful Midden Arts Lab for Amigos Bravos, an integrated arts ecology curriculum focussed on water and waste. In 2011 / 2012, she was invited to be the co-theme leader for the Inter-Symposium of Electronic Arts’ Education programme working with Agnes Chavez to develop the STEMarts curriculum tool; Open Source STEAM curriculum 1.0: an arts-led curriculum exploring Next-Generation Science concepts through design thinking. In 2012, 13 she acted as the consultant on the Los Alamos National Laboratory STEMarts challenge (2012, 2013), utilising LANL lab projects, 21st century blended arts-led learning to engage NM high school students in a real-world project to design the future. She continues to work with Agnes Chavez and the STEMarts Lab, New Mexico as part of an advisory team. As an interdisciplinary artist, producer, curator and researcher, Anita works across disciplines and media including film, audio and performance. Recognition of her artistic practice includes the only non-American citizen awarded a BRAVO award, for Memphis 45s, a digital AV motion sensor project (Memphis, TN. USA (2004) and the first Artist in Residence in the Rio Grande Del Norte National Monument, hosted by the Bureau of Land Management, Taos Field Office, Land Experience and Art of Place and OCHO, (2013). She continues to work with LEAP and other artists and organisations in New Mexico; The Paseo, Amigos Bravos and the Inter-Galactic Cultural Relations Institute and to exhibit and perform nationally and internationally, with over 80 international exhibitions, performances and residencies to date. Dr McKewon has worked as a researcher with SMARTlab in London and Dublin since 2003, and earned her practice-based PhD in collaboration with SMARTlab, at the National College of Art and Design.

Thwaites served as President of the International Society on Virtual systems and Multimedia (VSMM) 2003-2010. His research and teaching comprise media production, information design, digital heritage, bio-cybernetic research, and 3D spatial media. He was the first overseas researcher at NHK Science and Technical Research Labs in Tokyo specializing in 3D HDTV, in addition to being the recipient of a Fellowship from the Telecommunications Advancement Organization of Japan. He now continues to share his experience and passion to innovate new projects and fields of research, with staff and students at Sunway University. Colin is an award winning highly driven & innovative Engineer, with qualifications & experience in innovative technologies in the Mechanical and Energy engineering sectors such as Biomass Energy, 3D Printing, Additive Manufacturing, Biomedical Engineering & Innovative Design. He is currently leading new research in the Energy, Environment, 3D Printing and Innovation fields at UCD, with a focus on policy & technology forecasting, advancing additive manufacturing & medical device design, 3rd world social entrepreneurial applications of additive manufacturing and integrating advanced technologies social, environmental, philanthropic and entrepreneurial activities. He is currently undertaking a PhD in engineering in UCD focusing on improving innovation methodologies using disruptive technologies. He co-founded a social enterprise in 2014, The Rapid Foundation, which aims to disperse 3d printing technology to 3rd world locations and conduct printing workshops with schools in the UK and Ireland. Its goal is to change the way developmental aid is distributed, and improve the innovation potential of all people, regardless of their circumstances. This work won the IMechE 2016 Fritz Schumacher award and was a noted project in the 2016 UN Global Sustainable Development Report. This work resulted in him being named as one of Forbes 30 Under 30 for Europe in Science and Healthcare, as one of JCI’s Ten Outstanding Young People for 2017 and as a 2017 Nissan Generation Next Ambassador.

His latest venture is the Printastic project, run in collaboration with the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government tackling the recycling and repurposing of waste plastic materials from the oceans utilising low cost, low tech solutions supported by 3D printing technologies. 2015 Prof Guidi is responsible for the courses of "Reverse Engineering" and "Computer Vision" at the School of Mechanical Engineering, and for the courses of "Reverse Modelling" and "Computer Graphics" at the School of Design in Politecnico di Milano. His research interests, originated from medical imaging, are in the field of active and passive 3D sensors, geometric processing, reverse engineering and 3D metrology. Since the end of the ‘90s he started to apply range imaging technologies to Cultural Heritage documentation by: - digitizing important statues by Donatello (Maddalena, 2000 and David, 2003);

integrating active and passive 3D methods (Maddalena 2.0, 2001), - experimenting for the first time 3D techniques on large paintings (Leonardo da

Vinci - L’Adorazione dei Magi, 2002); - exploring for the first time the 3D scanning of large and detailed objects

(Gismondi – Plaster of Imperial Rome, 2004); - generating the virtual replica of the entire Forum of Pompei (2007); - integrating real 3D with historical sources for reconstructing Vietnamese

temples (2011), - developing 4D diachronic modelling from real 3D data (Certosa di Pavia, 2012). He has coordinated the massive 3D digitization in the Archaeological Museum of Milan (500+ models in 3 years 2012-15). Dr. Guidi is Senior Member of the IEEE and serves as reviewer of several international journals Published by Elsevier, Springer and IEEE. He has been involving in the scientific committees of several conferences including “3DIM” (IEEE), “Videometrics” (SPIE), 3DArch (ISPRS), “Computer Applications and Quantitative Methods in Archaeology” (CAA) and “Virtual System and Multimedia” (IEEE), chairing and organizing the 2012 edition in Milan (VSMM2012).

training, and is based within the School of International

Communications, The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Prof. Ch’ng has

bid at the University of Birmingham where he led research in the development and

Prof. Ch’ng has been invited twice to the Royal Society, and is an organiser and

speaker at the Royal Society Theo Murphy Scientific meeting in 2017. He has also

been invited to present his work at two British Science Festivals, at the Orkney

International Science Festival, and for Darwin’s Bicentenary Exhibition. He has been

featured in numerous international media such as National Geographic Television,

Channel Four’s Time Team Special, Nature, Scientific American and the Oxford

handbook of maritime archaeology among others.

Prof. Ch’ng is associate editor for MIT Press’ Presence: Teleoperators and Virtual

Environments, the world’s oldest and foremost journal for VR research. Prof.

Ch’ng leads the complex systems modelling as Co-PI in the €2.5M ERC ‘Lost

Frontiers’ Advanced Grant. Prof. Ch’ng was awarded the Ningbo Municipal

Individual 3315 Talent award in 2015.

Dr. Elini Mangina • Associate Professor UCD • Deputy VP (International) Science, UCD Eleni Mangina carried out her PhD work at the University of Strathclyde (UK), Dept. of Electronic and Electrical Engineering. The research area focused different Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques (Knowledge based systems, Artificial Neural Networks, Case Based Reasoning systems and Model based Reasoning systems). Eleni holds an M.Sc. in Artificial Intelligence from the Department of Artificial Intelligence at University of Edinburgh in the UK and an MSc in Agricultural Science from Agricultural University of Athens in Greece. Eleni joined the School of Computer Science (UCD) in 2002 and is an active researcher in Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications in domains like engineering, the power industry, bioinformatics, education, agriculture, supply chain management and music. Recent research focus includes Robotics, Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems and Virtual and Augmented Reality applications in education through simulation. She works closely with SMARTlab on the area of Drones as Assistive Technology Tools and co-supervises several current SMARTlab PhD candidates.
