Kris’ Kolumn
Thank you. THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!
Many thanks to all of you who have renewed your
memberships or become new members! Thank you for your support!
Your support with those few membership dollars greatly help Your Club to put on various
Club functions, like Your summer BBQs & Pool Parties, Your Holiday Parties, and Your Annual
Open House, as well as very tangible (but little-seen) website, hard copies of renewal and
liability forms, and the wine that gets raffled off every 1st Wednesday of the Month General
Meeting at Ecco’s. Thanks to electronic media, we can now provide this, Your newsletter, to
You and past Members, who sometimes attend our various Club events. For all of this, Your Board and I thank you for your support!
A lot happens when you’re away from Our Club. Away for most of the summer, I missed the
Gibson’s BBQ, Barbie’s Pool Party, and FREE PIZZA at General Meetings. Conversely, a lot
happens when you’re doing things with Your Club, like at Casa de Lopez (right, Judy and
friends?). By the time you read this, Bob and Jan will have discovered how well they like to
sail and members will have been discussing the various predictions for a good El Nino winter.
My biggest hope for the coming month is that more of our past Members will decide that
they would like to support this Club, which turns 77 next month, with their Membership.
The bonus is when they all participate in a Club Event, like they did at Gibson’s BBQ a few
months ago. While some mention was made of skiing this summer, I’m willing to bet that
most people were talking about going to games with friends and relatives, summer
vacations, hiking in Yosemite, swimming or lying out at the beach, and wine tasting at one of
Lance’s wonderful finds.
SKI BREEZE SEPTEMBER 2015 VOLUME 77, ISSUE 4
With the fun of the Snow Season rushing up to meet us, we are now rushing to cram as
much summer fun as possible into the last few weeks of summer. In all this, isn’t it nice that
Your Ski Club likes to do lots of non-ski stuff? Isn’t it also really cool that an organization
called the Los Angeles Council of Ski Clubs (LAC) serves as an umbrella group for a couple
dozen ski clubs across the LA metropolitan area?
Did you know that some LA-based ski clubs are party animals? That some still have buses for
bus trips to Mammoth? That some go up to Mammoth at other times of the month? That
many have a wide variety of picnics, and outings? That some of our own Long Beach Ski Club
Members also belong to one or two of those other Clubs? That the LAC is one of many such
councils that belong to the Far West Ski Association (FWSA)? You’ve at least heard of that one, eh?
Well, I’m here to tell you, that it’s ok to do things with other Ski Clubs! And, our Ski Breeze
editor, Cynthia, is running a column that lists a few of the more exciting activities coming up.
Oh, Your Board is sure that You’ll want to stick close, as driving thru LA traffic is not generally
a dream-come-true. But, Your Board also wants to encourage all of us to share ski vitality
with others across the LA metro area – once or twice a year. And to invite Your new friends
in other Ski Club to make the sojourn to Long Beach upon occasion!
Speaking of skiing: By now, El Nino is one of the hottest (coldest?) topics of conversation in
the Southland – even if you never intend to ski. Maybe, this will be a year of really big
dumps in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Maybe, we’ll get snow bound at Mammoth once or
twice (like the good ol’ days?) Maybe, a couple years of El Nino’s will help to end this
drought? Maybe, we’ll get served water at a restaurant without asking for it? Maybe, we
won’t have to bring our own water bottles to a restaurant?
This could be the year! Um, er, ah, this could also be the year, as Ken Gregg might remind
us, that we actually exercise for a few months before we hit the slopes so that we don’t get
hurt on the slopes (or hiking, if El Nino doesn’t bring us that precious snow).
But, before we get all excited and overheated about El Nino being the god-send of all snow-
lovers, we might like to listen to what the experts are really saying…. This will probably not
be the biggest El Nino on record. In fact, during a recent and profound Climate Change
conference in Sacramento, they have told us that fully 1/3 of all El Nino’s are a dud – no real rain, snow, or other precipitation.
On the other hand, other weather systems (i.e., La Nina and “normal”) result in roughly the
same fraction of good snowy winters! So, if you know how to do the Snow Fall Tango, please
do it! If you don’t know the steps, either learn them or another Snow Dance… soon!
SKI BREEZE SEPTEMBER 2015 VOLUME 77, ISSUE 4
Have you donated your precious time to do a snow dance? If not, maybe you can think of
donating an item (that pink elephant gift from last Christmas??) for this year’s October 17th
Annual Open House at the Cerritos Bahia Yacht Club. Always a fun time, this event serves to
loosen up a few pockets and generate a little more cash flow for Your Club. During the past
few years, REI has kindly blessed us with one of their staff telling us about a lot of their
equipment and clothing. Most of all: it’s good casual fun with cheap drinks, good food, and
a time when people can really let down their hair.
And, YES, we do sometimes attract new Members! So, please spread the word!!
Spread the word, also, for Roberto’s list of Weekends at Mammoth! With the promise of El
Nino, our silent auction (at Your Annual Open House) of a Weekend at Mammoth is sure to
have a much higher value than usual! The upcoming ski season being already so popular,
you can bet that the Club’s Saturday Night Dinner will also be popular!
Spread the word also for auditions for the Dream Team! This wonderful group of wanna-
be’s, wanna be Your racers on the hill! Let Craig know that you’ve got fresh wax on your
skis, as well as recently sharpened edges, and just gotta do it with the best fun-loving skiers
on the hill!
While you’re at it, spread the word to read the rest of this well-deserving rag! Your Board,
especially Cynthia, is producing a good bit here, including tid-bits of who is doing what across
the landscape. So, get in on the gossip!
That much said, let the good times roll, again and again, down the slopes and back up the
lifts – and don’t let Chair 13 hit you in the head!
Cheers!
Kris

September 2015 LBSC Ski Club Week Trip Report By Bob & Tara Shepard
All LBSC club members who have signed up and the ones who have verbally committed to going on
the Aspen Colorado Week ski trip, need to mail in their September 1st remaining balance. Be sure to
make your checks payable to the Long Beach Ski Club.
The Aspen trip will be Sunday to Sunday January 31 to February 7, 2016. The Aspen trip cost is $1725
for Adults and $1649 for Seniors 65 years and older. So far the LBSC has 8 members who have signed
up for the trip and two members have given a verbal commitment to be placed on the trip’s manifest.
There are only 5 more open spots for the LBSC on the week trip and after September 1, 2015, if those
5 spots are not filled, they will be released back to the other 3 ski clubs. The other 3 ski clubs have
sold out all of their Aspen spots and are looking for more openings on the Aspen trip. So they will be
able to use any of the unfilled LBSC spots, after September 31st.
We will be staying in the Aspen GANT two bedroom condos. There is still one 3 Bedroom condo
available on this trip. If you would like to get your group in this unit, just let me know your request.
Do not forget when you get to Aspen, to be sure to make your reservations for the Paradise Café.
So start getting all of your ski equipment in good condition. And you have plenty of time to check out
all of the latest ski clothes fashions for the next ski season. The Aspen Week Trip flyer, the Trip sign-up
application and Aspen Release forms are attached to the Ski Breeze.
Be sure to send in your Aspen Trip Application NOW to ensure your name is on the Aspen go list
manifest and not on the waiting list.

Sarah Sez … By Sarah Pool
Where are Yvonne & Gary tonight? Yvonne Place actually began going to outdoor concerts with the LBSC years ago on Thursday nights in the summer at the Market Place where Libby, Jan, Taylor, and Fred Sleep saved places for the group. There would end up being 15-30 LBSC members having fun together. Yvonne didn't know of any other concerts and was too busy playing volleyball almost every night of the week.
Although she knew there were municipal band concerts around, she was not that interested. When playing volleyball ended for Yvonne, her nights were free, and Gary Norman brought a dog, Harvey, into her life. Harvey loved concerts (or just going anywhere) and Yvonne found out about concerts at Seal Beach on Wednesdays, Naples Peninsula on Sundays, and attended various other concerts with local groups after the municipal concert season ended in August at Marine Stadium and El Dorado Park where some of her favorite local bands play--the Elm Street Band, Emperors, and Knight Ryder (from the Gas Lamp). At those favorite locations Yvonne almost never misses a concert, but she has also gone to the Naples Colonnade on Tuesdays, Signal Hill on Wednesdays, Garden Grove on Thursdays, Cypress on Saturdays plus some other locations, but never too far from home--especially when her favorite bands are playing those mentioned above, DSB or Escape--Journey bands, Hollywood U 2 or LAvation--both U 2 bands.
SKI BREEZE SEPTEMBER 2015 VOLUME 77, ISSUE 4
Yvonne also likes the Rolling Stones band that played at our LBSC dinner dance in Downey twice, some Beatles bands, and Lucas Nelson (Willie's son).
She finds out about most concerts from her personal "concert advisor" (her dog sitter) and websites for the bands or the City of Long Beach where schedules are posted. She enjoys the fact that these concerts are FREE, dogs are welcome, and they are held in beautiful locations near the water or in parks.
Since Yvonne grew up in Long Beach, she runs into old friends from volleyball, wallyball, or racquetball clubs, high school, current and former LBSC members and also make many new friends--especially because Maui, the Cocker Spaniel who is so adorable that everyone wants to stop to pet him and the neighbors’ two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Coco and Scooby, who often attend the concerts too. The concerts provide a chance to get together with friends she doesn't get to hang with that often. So why does Gary go? --mostly because of Yvonne. Gary will probably be glad when concert season ends; and Yvonne will enthusiastically look forward to next summer.
SKI BREEZE SEPTEMBER 2015 VOLUME 77, ISSUE 4
If you have any questions, Yvonne is definitely our “LBSC Expert” and our “Go-To Person” on summer concerts. She even makes reminder calls if she thinks you might want to meet up! Thanks for your enthusiasm, Yvonne.
And Gary, thanks for your patience and cooperation! Photos are of Harvey, who once appeared in the Press Telegram wearing his sun glasses (RIP), Maui, Coco, and Scooby. Cheers! Sarah

According to a statement released on August 13 by the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration, there is a greater than 90% chance that El Nino will
continue throughout the Northern Hemisphere for the winter of 2015-16 and around
an 85% chance it will last into early spring 2016. Details can be found at
www.cnn.com/2015/08/13/weather/el-nino-2015/

If you can possibly take the second week of December off, I strongly urge you to attend
the LA Council Ski and Race Week. This coming season we will have several LBSC
members attending for good reason- it is a great way to improve your skiing and have a
great time doing so. For more information please visit their website at:

Of course, we will all have a much more enjoyable and safe ski season if we maintain
our strength, endurance and flexibility. As it gets closer to ski season, it is important to
start incorporating ski-specific exercises into your workout routine. If you have access
to a gym, you might want to try some of the U S Ski Team’s five essential ski-training
exercises. You can view videos of their exercises at:

Yours truly just watched their videos and realized that I am so not ready for ski season.
That’s it for now….gotta get to the gym!!

Get Loose with Lance By Lance Liebl
Our annual August barbecue at Casa de Lopez was a tremendous success! We had 24
club members attending. The food, especially the desserts, were outstanding!!
Our host, Dave Lopez had the patio ready for this
event by laying out the tables so that everyone had
comfortable seating.
Dave even had his new palm tree garden ready for
this event. Note it in the background of these
pictures.
It was a perfect ending for summer activities sponsored by the club!
We had some

corn for this event as
well!
And even included
Dave’s son Dan in on the action as
apprentice in training to learn from our
experts!

Ken’s Komments by Ken Gregg
As all who have lived in SoCal for more than year or two have come to realize, September
can be more like the end of summer rather than the start of fall. So if you are like me, you are still in the mindset of thinking about doing summer type things.
However, now would be an excellent time to start thinking about & doing things to help
prepare for the upcoming ski season. Speaking of which, this next season has all the makings
of an epic one! With the current El Nino continuing to be one of the strongest ever, it bodes
well for heavier than normal rain fall, which will hopefully in turn, translate into massive
snow falls in the Sierras. So as I mentioned last month, please keep doing your snow dances
and offering an occasional prayer or toasting an adult beverage to the snow gods. It can only help!!
1. Physical conditioning – Hopefully you have been taking advantage of our excellent SoCal weather to get out and work on your conditioning. For those of you who are struggling with finding time to work on you conditioning, I’d like to offer a couple of suggestions that have been passed onto me. First, while you are brushing your teeth, don’t just admire yourself in the mirror, do 10-12 deep knee bends each time. Secondly, a couple of times a day, drop 10 paper clips on the floor and bend/stretch to pick them up one at a time. And thirdly, whenever possible, take the stairs rather than the elevator (at least for a couple of floors). Even these simple actions will help get you ready and hopefully will stimulate you to come upon with some other actions. So get going and just do it!!!
2. Equipment – Now would be an excellent time start thinking about your equipment for this upcoming season. Take a good hard look at your boots, skis and bindings. For those of you who don’t do your own ski maintenance, this is a good time of the year to keep an eye open for early season sales & maintenance offers. Also take a good hard look at your secondary equipment (such as goggles, helmet, poles, etc.) and your clothing to see if anything needs to be repaired, replaced or cleaned.
3. Participation – Please plan to join us for our next monthly General Membership Meetings to find out more details about the upcoming season’s weekend ski trips to Mammoth, the week trip to Aspen & social events are being planned.
The next general meeting will be held, as usual, on the 1st Wednesday of the month, which means September 2nd @ Ecco’s Pizza in Long Beach. The pizza is free and so is the comradery. Ken
