Kris’ Kolumn
The moderate El Nino of the 2015-16 ski season brought us twice the snow of last season, enough for
many powder days and true Spring skiing, as well as brisk winds for sailing! In June, the LBSC summer gets
into full swing with BBQs, pool parties, more unique wine tastings, and swimming off sail boats.
Before summer’s swelter, it’s time to celebrate the past year with frivolity and friends
with a classic Long Beach setting sun over Alamitos Bay at our Annual Dinner-Dance, Saturday, May 7th. During the past few years, our Dinner-Dance has featured a fun-
loving presentation of Club history, past-year highlights, a few serious thoughts for the coming year, and Craig Gibson’s Team Long Beach. Hopefully, you will enjoy the
raffle and silent-auction, which help fund our activities throughout the year, and your
new Board.
Dinner is discounted for those who pay their renewal or new membership fees by May
7th, the day of the Dinner-Dance. Please RSVP with Lance Liebl (Social VP) ASAP or by May 1st. The current President buys a drink for each new member.
All 2015-16 members should have received a mailing that includes:
- ballot and ballot envelope - membership form (also available at the Dinner-Dance) - Dinner-Dance flyer (RSVP with Lance today) - stamped return envelope
If you haven’t mailed yours, please bring it to the May 4th General Meeting at Ecco’s.
SKI BREEZE MAY 2016 VOLUME 77, ISSUE 12
If you haven’t mailed your renewal or Dinner-Dance checks, please RSVP with Lance,
and pay at the door.
Other news:
May-June is also when Shep helps us to select which week-long trip we’ll do next year!
Roberto will be listing many of the Mammoth and local activities in his column
throughout the summer. The Club will show up at various Thursday evening concerts, and maybe an evening movie out-doors.
Sara’s last column is always an interesting read!
Craig and Brian will keep you in stitches, as we all shall at the May 7th Dinner-Dance.
Cheers!
Kris

May 2016 LBSC Ski Club Trip Report By Bob & Tara Shepard
We are still looking at two different Ski Resorts for the 2017 Week Ski. We are hoping
to get the cost on these two resorts soon. However, we now need all of the Long
Beach Ski Club members to select which Ski Resort you would prefer to sign-up for.
Hopefully, the trip will be scheduled for the first week of February for the 2017 Week
Ski Trip. Go to both their websites attached below for more information.
Choices are as follows:
BIG SKY, Montana Big White, Canada
http://bigskyresort.com/ http://www.bigwhite.com/geo/ca/
Email your selection now to Shep at: [email protected]
We are still looking for one of the LBSC members who went on the Aspen Ski Week trip
to host the Aspen Pot Luck Photo party, hopefully in May if we get a location. There
are normally about 25 members who attend the Photo Pot Luck Party.
If anyone feels they can host the Aspen Pot Luck Photo Party, please contact Shep as
soon as possible at his Email address: [email protected]

P.S. Thought I’d share this as I just returned from Albuquerque from a funeral of one of our youngest Balloon crew members at age 26. Below is a great photo of the Harley Davidson Hearse from the Albuquerque funeral where 300 motorcyclist for 3 New Mexico cycle clubs shared the day.

Sarah Sez … By Sarah Pool
“Making a Speedy Recovery!”
Just so you’re aware, our long-time member and past
president, Bob Miller, has successfully come through surgery to repair a tendon in his leg.
Luckily, his accident did not happen on a ski slope, as he is a very skilled skier! He had a little moment in
searching for his son’s dog during a dog-sitting visit
where he opted to save his cup of coffee from spilling, missed a step into the back yard and hit some concrete
real hard.
Being the strong, in-shape guy
who visits the gym regularly, he probably took the fall better
than many of us would have, and is on the road to recovery.
He wants to jump right back into things, but full recovery
will take some time and some
physical therapy. His family and Jan, his long-time girlfriend, are
giving him lots of TLC.
SKI BREEZE MAY 2016 VOLUME 77, ISSUE 12
Please let this be a reminder to all of us that it is hard to multi-task and be safe at the same time. Take care around your house and moving around to be mindful of your
footing. We can all take a look around our homes and remove obstacles that could
cause an injury or a fall. Put that drink down before you attempt to chase the dog!
Bob hosts the monthly Board Meeting at his office at no charge to the Club, so this
might be a time to remember this great guy and what a valuable asset he is to our Club.
If you have time, I know he would appreciate a card, e-mail, or a call to cheer him on
to full throttle.
Cheers!

Craig’s Crag …
By Craig Gibson
Looking Back and Looking Forward
It’s been a great year! Once again our club has continued to grow from a membership
of 62 from two years ago to a total now of 90. In addition, our race team has been
newly energized, moving from third place to second. Hopefully Team Long Beach
members will be able to attend the Dinner Dance to be recognized (or roasted…).
Looking forward, we face new challenges. Race participants in the ULLR League
continue to dwindle as race fees continue to rise. At this point, we are looking at a
significant increase in race fees for next season. Many good ideas are being floated
around on how to deal with this, but so far no action has been taken.
Here is a list of possibilities:
1. Have fewer races.
2. Race at a resort other than Mammoth.
3. Bring NASTAR back to Mammoth and hold club races on NASTAR courses.
4. Negotiate a deal with Walgreens (currently in a merger with Rite Aid) whereby
they support ski racing in return for signage on the timing shack.
Whatever happens, the stakeholders in club ski racing remain committed to keeping
this great sport alive. Club racing will not die. It will, however, evolve.
See you at the Dinner Dance!

Mammoth Weekend Ski Trip Report By Roberto Tovar
The final Mammoth weekend for the season couldn't have been more different day to day! Friday dawned overcast with threatening clouds on the horizon and a stiff wind blew up and up the slopes. As predicted, snow started to fall at 1:00 PM. Most of the lifts shut down by 2:00 PM. It continued to snow most of the night. Saturday was completely different as the storm was gone and there were blue bird skies, the fresh snow covered the hard packed surface from the day before. Too bad you weren't there! A front began to move in on Sunday, with more snow predicted for later that day. LBSC'ers on the trip included Emily, Letty, Lori, Lou, Steve C. and yours truly, Thanks again for a great ski season!
