Kris’ Kolumn

As feather hits parchment, many of our members are contemplating the splish-splash of Our Ski Club Pool Party.

Many of us are also making end-of-summer plans for kids or grandkids, and some soon returning to school. Some of us

are trying to catch our collective breaths, having done far more this summer than is humanly probable ..….

Hopefully, those of you who are a little slow (like me) on filling out your membership form and writing that measly $40 or $56 check will get that done, too. And Thank You

for all Your Support!

Courtesy of Shep, our representative at the FWSA Convention in San Diego this past

June, we will be going to Aspen for our LBSC 2016 Week Ski Trip from January 31-

February 7!

Having been on a Shep-inspired trip last year, I now know that he enthuses great fun,

even with tired ideas of yore, he creates an atmosphere between snow-loving

companions that you usually only read about … or these days see in movies.

Just one catch: You gotta be a member! So if you haven’t already, please be sure to

get your membership form and check in with your Week Trip form. Maybe, you’d like your best friends to join us?? We appreciate Your Support!!

As most all of our big trips for this summer are over (??), except for Labor Day Weekend & sailing to Catalina…, you can depend on us raising the roof for another

Membership Open House in October, probably again at Lance’s Cerritos Bahia Yacht Club.

You may ask why Cerritos Bahia Yacht Club? Well for one, the beers are cheap and we

always have a fantastic time!

It’ll be Brian’s first time stepping up to the plate during the raffle, stepping in for Ken

who so ably served as Ways and Means Chair for so many years. And, YES! you may

donate a service or whatever other creative idea you may think of!

You can also depend on Your Board and Chairs to hype-up a few new activities, like a

movie night. At the Theatre? At someone’s home? Please Read Cynthia’s column to get the goods.

At the same time, Lance continues to have us set for summertime BBQs and wine tasting to compare notes on travels, kids & grand kids, and savor good times with our

ski buds.

Please don’t forget to get your little tid-bits of what you’ve been up to this summer – and send them to Cynthia, so she can judiciously sprinkle them throughout Your Ski

Breeze. Photos are encouraged!

Photos are encouraged, Membership is encouraged, Your Participation is encouraged!

Respectfully yours with Cheerful memories coming up!

Sarah Sez … By Sarah Pool

Julie McGregor DeLuccio’s Yoga in a Chair! Always into fitness, having worked for many years as a

middle school, P. E. teacher and cheerleading coach, Julie McGregor DeLuccio, (longtime club member) has had more time to dive into yoga since retirement. Especially interested in reaching seniors, Julie took a

weekend training in Chair Yoga last fall and began teaching at the Methodist Church in Los Altos. She is currently continuing her education at the School of Gentle Yoga in Vista and will have her 200 Hour Certification in December. Julie believes everyone can do yoga - you begin at your current level and progress from there. There is no "I can't do yoga!" She has all ages in her classes – some are probably in their 50's, and then there’s Ernie, who is 90! Class attendees have all kinds of ailments and conditions but are finding relief through their practice of yoga. Julie explains, “Most of us who practice yoga in a chair find it more comfortable on our wrists, knees and shoulders. As we age, we also need to practice balance. The chair is there if you need it. We do get out of the chair and do some standing stretches and balances but the chair is always there for us. Most of us are not aware that we breathe poorly. A big part of the class is learning how to breathe properly to help ease anxiety, tension, and pain. We then practice linking our breathing to our movements.” “I love yoga and love sharing it with others.” Julie says with enthusiasm. She invites all Long Beach Ski Club Members to join in on her classes! Feel free to bring a friend or tell a neighbor.

Other Exciting Tid-Bits! … By Cynthia Carter

Below are a few pics from Kris and Ying’s recent trip to Scotland.

This picture which has both Kris and Ying in it below, is taken from the top of the William Wallace Monument in Stirling Bridge area where the Battle of Stirling Bridge was fought in the year 1297.

Now this is a great thing for anyone’s

bucket list….a cap from the infamous St.

And no trip to Scotland would be

complete without the bag pipe players!

If you have any pictures from a recent trip, be sure to send them in so we can post

them. Add a little blurb and Cynthia will get them into the newsletter for you!

Get Loose with Lance By Lance Liebl

On July 11th we had a wine tasting at District Wine. Wow! Only five members attended,

including my date, which is about the smallest group we’ve ever had for wine tasting!

I’m sure this is due to many of our members being gone during summer vacation. Sooo,

we’ll have to make that up during our next wine tasting in August!

On July 25th we had about 22 attend

the barbecue and pool party at the

home of Barbie Spatz.

Although it was a hot day the patio

cover was perfect, since we had no

sun baking down of the guests.

The evening breeze was great and

we all were comfortable.

Page 15: SKI BREEZE AUGUST 2015 volume 76, issue 15 · 2015-08-02 · SKI BREEZE August 2015 Volume 76, Issue 15 Kris’ Kolumn As feather hits parchment, many of our members are contemplating

We had a problem

with the Jacuzzi, so

unfortunately, no

one entered the

pool, but that didn’t

stop us from having

fun!

And, surprisingly, this time we had enough corn for everyone and even had some left

overs to share with members.

We ended the evening by singing

Happy Birthday to one of our

new members, Lori Maynard,

shown sitting here with her friend

Yvonne Place.

On August 8th, we will be having a wine tasting at Bistro St. Germaine, located on Main

Street in downtown Seal Beach. We’ll meet at 5 pm at the reserved table in the middle

of the room. So make sure to mark your calendars as the last time we went to Bistro

St. Germaine, we were booked full for this event!!

On August 22nd we will have our last barbecue of the summer at Casa de Lopez (Dave

Lopez’s home) located at 4225 Lomina Avenue in Long Beach. This barbecue has been a

favorite summer event for the past 3 years. I expect at large turnout for this barbecue

as well. And remember, the club will provide plenty of corn, watermelon and ice for

this barbecue.

See attached flyers for details for the August events.

I want to thank Barbie for opening her home for the recent barbecue. And I want to

remind members to bring guests who may want to join our club!

Ken’s Komments by Ken Gregg

I will assume that most of you are in the midst of enjoying another fine Southern

California summer. Although I must admit that recent, unseasonal rains that we

received, have me thinking that this current El Nino might be just the thing to bring us

some much needed rain & snow this coming fall & winter. Please keep doing your

snow dances and an occasional prayer or toasting an adult beverage to the snow gods.

1. Physical conditioning – I don’t know about you but with the potential of there

being an excellent snow season this coming fall & winter, I am already motivated

to pick up my workout/exercise routine. I am not a physical fitness expert, but I

do believe in the importance of the three (3) elements of strength, stamina and

flexibility. I would highly recommend that you try to work all 3 of these elements

to workout/exercise routines. Remember, it is never too late to start and if you

have been doing much lately please start out slowly to insure no injuries or

pulled muscles.

2. Equipment – Not much to say on equipment at this time other than to be on the

lookout of the new Ski magazines with all the new offerings. I will mention to

watch out for early season sales & maintenance offers by companies such as

Sports Chalet.

3. Participation – Please remember that even during these summer months your

club is still holding our next monthly General Membership Meetings. These

meetings are held on the 1st Wednesday of every month, which means that the

next one will be held on August 5th @ Ecco’s Pizza in Long Beach. The pizza is

free and so is the comradery. Drinks and things other than the pizza are on your

own nickel. The LBSC has also scheduled a number of interesting events coming

up in August so please look for the details elsewhere in this newsletter and hope

to see you there.
