In leisure this discipline is known as ski touring, where exploring themountains is premium.

Ski touring is strongly anchored in mountain history, as it is the onlytechnique that enables you to go up and down slopes and cross ridgesand gullies when the summits are covered with snow. For several centures (the earlest representatons o pantngsin Norway date back 4000 years) ski touring has been a way oftransporting people living in snow-covered regions. The Alpne Mltary aopte the technque at the en o the 19th century, when travelling in mountainous terrain, which subsequently becameoblgatory or all Alpne troops.Ski touring evolved into a leisure sport towards the end of the

    19th

century when civilians started exploring the massifs out ofcuriosity, and taking greater pleasure in the 1960s. From then on thesearch for intensity and a taste for eort created a discipline in its ownright, ski mountaineering, a very dierent experience to alpine skiing.

Those who practice this sport are rst and foremost accomplishedsportsmen and women who nd it the perfect complete sport fortranng an enurance. But the arrival of ski lifts marks the end of this craze, and the start ofthe joys of alpine skiing. However in the 80s the brth o such legenary races as the PierraMenta (Arche-Beauort, France), the Patrouille des Glaciers(Zermatt-Verbier, Switzerland) and the Trofeo Mezzalama (Cervna-Gressoney, Italy) kick-start ski mountaineering, which is then lifted bya new enthusiasm and festive atmosphere.Over the last 10 years the sport has become well established

countng 80,000 to 100,000 individuals identified by the FrenchMountaineering and Climbing Federation, which has 82,000members including 15 to 20,000 who practice ski touring. Nowadaysanyone can make tracks in virgin territory, mostly thanks to theevoluton o equpment propose by manuacturers. But ans are alsoconcerned about environmental impact and want to avoid using skilifts. Ski mountaineering races are extremely varied and they can be ashort outing of a few hours or a raid lasting several days, such as thefamous tour Chamonix-Zermatt.Recently the increasing numbers of ski tourers and new freetouringdiscipline (that focuses on downhill and the search for virgin powder)has encourage brans to evelop the equpment an enable thesport to evolve.

The majestic mountains. Ski mountaineers leave only tracks in the snow. Not using ski lifts respects nature and

creates a pure sport in perfect harmony with the environment , stngshng t rom many other montansports.

Competitive ski mountaineering is no exception to this rule. Competitors climb eating up the vertical altitude,

without any mechanical assistance just their sheer physical and mental strength.

Ski mountaineering sees the ski touring elite gather together around the

same compettve sprt. Top-level athletes tran throghot the year tocompete and win these competitions which have multiplied in recent

years. Ocal compettons sch as the French Championships or the

World Cup stages are considered compulsory.Every one o these events s clt an challengng, reqrng bothendurance skills in the uphill and technical skills in the downhill. As oneof the most comprehensive sports, competitive ski mountaineeringsees the best athletes in the world participating, such as the Spaniard

Kilian Journet Burgada or the French Laetitia Roux (EropeanChampion, winner of the World Cup 2012), exceed themselves. Ski

mountaineering is a relatively exclusive sport, with a humane dimension

where all its sportsmen and women know each other, support each other

yet compete aganst each other on eqal grons. Conviviality andcompetition are compatible and only sports with less media coverageenable this unifying power to excel oneself to be possible.

    a bsissi f vm

The democratization of ski touring and the growing number of

ski mountaineering competitions has pushed manufacturers to

develop appropriate equipment, quite distinct from alpine skiing or

mountaineering. Today the vast majority of brands oer a touring

proposition where you will nd technical solutions to save users energy

and to reduce weight. Less fatigue, increased performance. The weight issue is central, which is why all equipment that is developednowadays is feather light. 1 for 7 is the ratio used, in other words; onegram less on the feet (Boots, skis, bindings) corresponds to 7 grams won

    in the backpack.

Ski mountaineering has had a competitive edge or a long time.

The frst races date back to 1907 (1 st international competition CAF

Montgenevre Hautes-Alpes), explains Nicolas Bonnet, a mountaingue an ormer compettor.

The regular confrontations of the military ski patrol resulted ints ncluson at the winter Olympic Games right from their rsteton in Chamonix in 1924. It was kept until the Games in StMoritz in 1948. Subsequently dierent competitions and cups were

organized on a regional and national scale followed internationally, with an increase in popularity for races with high vertical ascents(up to 4000m), which would lengthen the race over several days.Examples include the first Mezzalama Trofeo in Italy in 1975 ,which was a real world gathering of ski mountaineers, with threeferent categores: cvlans, mltary an mountan gues.It was not until 2002 that the first official Ski MountaineeringWorld Championships from ISMC (International SkiMountaineering Competitions, ex-ISMF) took place. It was inFrance, close to the crins National Park, Serre-Chevalier (Hautes-Alpes). There was already 22 countries represented and 2 eventswere programmed: an individual race and a team race, added to acombined ranking.11 years later the event s returnng to France to the heart o the

crns Mass, 7 days of competitions, from the 9

    th

    to 15

    th

February2013. The World Championships have grown and now include anadditional 3 events: (Vertcal Race, Relay an Sprnt), n the heart othe resorts, to be more vsble an accessble to the general publc.Since 2002 this big event was organized in 5 other resorts on theEuropean continent, the opportunity to prac tice ski mountaineeringeach tme n the lmelght: in Spain (Val Aran n 2004), in Italy(Cuneo Provnce n 2006 an Claut n 2011), in Switzerland (Portesdu Soleil in 2008), in Andorra (Canllo n 2010).

    Iy, F, Swiz, Si, f s

Now impossible to ignore, the World Champions reunite the bestskiers in the world. Real rocket speeds in the ascents, as well as in thedescents, these athletes with minds of steel surpass themselves inthe heart of these magnicent landscapes. Whilst Italy, Switzerlandand France play neck and neck for the podiums, other nations likeSpain can count on a tank of high-level athletes such as Kilian JornetBurgada (Salomon 25 yrs ol) or Mireia Miro Varela (dYNAFiT,24 yrs ol).

Snce the begnnng o the worl Champonshps, the individual and team events have been the emblem ofthe discipline. They mostly take place high in the mountains, in the heart of spectacular scenery. The team event has very steep climbs, 4 to 5 in general, it necessitates carrying the skis, wearing crampons andbeng rope p n some glles. This is Alpine racing par excellence, a high mountain route where team spirit isessental to sccess. This is why holding the World Champion team title is the greatest victory, held now by the Italian duo Matteo

Eydallin and Denis Trento in the Mens Senior category and by Swiss Nathalie Etzensperger and Marie Troillet inthe womens Senors. The individual race is shorter bt reqres great physcal strength, n the ascents as mch as n the escents. itis the Spaniard Kilian Jornet Burgada and his compatriot Mireia Miro Varela who won gold in this event at the last

    worl Champonshps.

    Si ry

Both events show and help you understand the importance of technique and strategy in ski mountaineering.

The Sprint watches 6 riders at a time race on a well-dened course with approximately 80m altitude change:they start on skins on a slow gradient, followed by a short distance of 10 m carrying the skis, skis are replaced for

a sequence of kick-turns, then a descent with a dozen slalom gates, various movements, to end with cross country

skiing. All within 3 minutes, every second counts! This event is the ultimate in strategy where every movementmust be precisely executed. It is a erce neck and neck battle, like boardercross. The relay requires the same effort, violent and short! There are 4 rnners n each Mens Senor Relay team, 3competitors in the Youth (Junior / Cadet) and Senior Womens teams. Each skier travels 160 m in vertical ascent

over two ascents and descents as well as a passage on foot. Here the battle is just as exciting.

    t Vi r, si

A formidable and prestigious event, the Vertical Race consists of climbing as quickly as possible more than600m vertical ascent. Manplaton oes not help, only spee an perect technqe an enrance cont.Rght p the groome, steep slope, less than 20 mntes or the best to reach the top. Ths ntense an volenteort for the heart and muscles requires exceptional speed and technique.

During the last World Championships, it was the Spaniard Kilian Jornet Burgada an hs compatrot Mireia MiroVarela who rose to victory.

The events are broken down into categories by sex and age: Senior, Espoir, Junior and Cadet. The Espoir and Seniors runthe same events. It is the crins landscape that will dictate the rhythm of each event, particularly the Pic Aiglire whichculminates at 3307 m and the Pendine at 2750 m which is the highest point of the Puy Saint Vincent ski resort.

700km from Paris, 2h from Grenoble and Turin, 3h from Lyon, Marseillean Mlan, The crins are situated in the Alps on the italan borer.A high mountainous region, its classied valleys are preserved andprotecte by the crins National Park created in 1973 . wth tsmythical peaks and panoramas, you can easily indulge in ski touring, but also hiking or snowshoeing. It was English climbers, one of whom,Edward Whymper, urng the 19th century opened the rst routes inthe crns Mass, supervse an assste by local gues an porters. In 1877 Auguste Coolidge climbed the 3774m peak that carries hisname toay rght n the heart o the crns Mass.Lesser known is Captain Armand Adrian Durand who was also apioneer in the discovery of the crins. In 1823 in charge of geodesicsoperations for the execution of the map of France, he entered Vallouise

where he spent several years climbing the peaks and measuring thesurrounding areas. This is why he went to the top of the Pointe at3932m nowadays known as the Durand. Due to his actions, he alsoidentied the highest summit in the Southern Alps: the Barre descrns.

A few years later after these rst ascents, the mountains openthemselves up to sports an subsequently to the evelopment othe tourist and economic industry of the crins. The rst refuges andhotels were built for hikers and in 1909 The fraternal guides andporters in Pelvoux in Vallouise was later created; the future GuidesFeeraton. With peaks of over 3000m, of which the Barre des crins reaches4102m, the Ailefroide at 3953m (the secon French mountaneerng

ste) or the Pelvoux at 3946m, the crins are internationally renownedfor ski mountaineering.Local partcpants such as the crins High-Alpes Team actively takepart in its development. The Puy Saint Vincent and Pelvoux-Vallouisesites, the resort hosts of these World Championships have won thettle oHomologated Race by the International Ski MountaineeringFederation. This title enables the region to become known on a globalscale, by being able to welcome international competitions (WorldCups, European Champonshps, worl Champonshps...). A successor the French Mountan an Clmbng Feeraton an the crnsHigh-Alpes Team, who are hosting the rst global event of 2013.

Every morning, the trackers slip out quietly in the night to establish the

The skisAs for alpine skiing, ski manufacturers are able to oer genuine racing

skis for ski mountaineering. They must oer the best compromisefor ascents and descents, in other words, between lightness andmanoeuvrability.in the ascents, the shorter the skis (160cm for men, an 150cm for

women) an lighter (less than 700g per ski), the easier it will be toswitch.

In the descents we look at manoeuvrability (ease o hanlng),behaviour in all types of snow, grip (ts perormance n the trns n thesnow at high speeds), tonicity, reactivity an engagement.

The bindingsThe bindings provide two modes of movement. Uphill the heel isreleased an the oot pvots at the ront. Downhill the heel is attached. In competition insert technology is used: it must be fast and ecient

putting the skis on, the binding clips in the front of the boot inserts

and the bindings lock manually. The bindings must be both robust and

lightweight, especially since the revolution of the Low-Tech system byFritz Barthel in the 80s who invented bindings that weighed only

650g, when at the time ski mountaineering teams were using bindingsthat weighed 2kg. Today the lightest bindings on the market are theLowTech Race by DYNAFIT that weigh 115g.

BootsBoots must be exible and nd the correct balance between lightnessin the uphill, good flexibility (60) in the boot collar to enable exion inthe ankle to produce an action close to walking, and stiffness for betterdownhill skiing.Comfort may not be the rst concern of a ski mountaineer, but they

nevertheless use thermoformed liners for a snug t to gain precision.

The skinsTo avoid sliding backwards going uphill we glue shorthaired syntheticskins under the skis facing backwards. Before setting o downhill the skier removes the skins and keeps them

in his pocket or in his backpack to avoid the glue getting cold and he

puts them back on for the following uphill climb. So, a skin that loses

its adhesion to a ski forces a skier to stop racing. This is one of the

manipulations that is a key part of mountain skiing.

Competition equipmentWhatever the category, any competitor participating in an approved ski mountaineering race must have very

precise equipment: skis, bindings, boots, skins, safety equipment, complete clothing, backpack, ski gloves, helmet,

    poles an snglasses.

Extra equipmentDepending on the route, the quality of the snow and the weather conditions, the head of the race jury couldrequire competitors to take additional equipment (crampons, ice screws, harness, lanyard, carabiners, headtorch and rope), or extra clothing.

When the racecourse follows a route exclusively on secured slopes the course director can exclude RECCO

obligatory equipment, shovel, probe, backpack and its contents. The helmet is obligatory if there is a downhill

section of the race that is stop-watched.

    Shovel, probe, survival blanket

and Rescue Positioning Device (RECCO)Ths s the essential piece of safety equipment for an off-piste skierout in the snow-covered mountains.

Also known under the name RECCO, this device was invented 30 years

ago and enables you to nd a skier under the snow. Every competitor

wears this apparatus next to their body, underneath their clothes and

switched on, to be able to be found in the event of being buried under

    the snow.

ClothingThe outts designed for ski mountaineers are highly specialized and

    extremely technical.

The fabric used for ski mountaineering must be breathable toevacate perspraton n the ntense physcal otpt. It must also keepyou warm at the start of the race an rng the escents, whilstprotecting you from the wind. The clothes are ultra light (the constant am to be as lght as possble)an f to have ll reeom o movement. The abrcs se membranes sch as Gore-Tex Active Shell, Primaloft(lighter, warmer, more breathable), Polartec (warm and breathable),and under layers in natural bres like Merino wool that stay warm even

when wet and regulate body temperature.Ergonomic and gure hugging ski mountaineering outts offer totalfreedom of movement. wth a mltte o practcal etals or thecompetitor: lined pockets with zips or mesh for ventilation, large pockets

to stow away the skins and RECCO, etc.

Competing athletes must wear three layers on the top half of the bodyand two layers on the bottom half.

The backpackLightweight, it must be at one with the skier. Functional, t oersgagets an specal researche soltons so the athlete can manageall his manipulations during the race without wasting time: externalattachments for the ice axe, carrying system for the skis on theback or laterally (it is prohibited to carry the skis in the shoulder straps),

compartment for safety equipment, water bottle holder, emergencywhistle, integrated safety box, etc
