CHAIRMANS CHATTER

Well Christmas and New Year have come and gone and we all now look forward to the spring and getting back out on the water. Christmas time had the as usual excellent Grimer day and night with the day part this year being at the kart Centre at Cheddar for a 3 hour enduro event. The more hardy had an early morning shooting before coming down to the karts, everybody seemed to be there so I can assume that there were no fatal shootings !! The Karting was great fun with more fouls being awarded than they had

ever had before, and that was just to Grimer and Rod Hawkins… A great event with team Bubblin hot Vs Nemesis with the latter coming out victorious, the team being Grimer, Rod, Adam Clarke and Alex’s mate as he became known. The night time was traditional Grimer party with fun, booze and food and the usual orgy in the hot tub !!!! The Grimers looked like Brean for the night with campers everywhere, great to see all the Lyme crowd there. New year was the normal fayre at the pav with Ken and some great fancy dress !! The club do was organised by Sara Benny at the Webbington and was a great night with good food and more booze, thank you Sara for your efforts and to all those that supported the night. Water activity has been very quiet with only one or two venturing out to try boats and as far as I know only Grimer mad enough to ski. The first phase of the sea front works are now complete but the new wall

work has started and could be disruptive when launching during the early part of the season so please be extra careful when launching. The old tractor is slowly giving in to years of abuse and salt and Grimer is currently on the look out for a replacement. We agreed at a recent meeting that some members would help finance the new tractor by contributing equal parts, say £250 as an interest free loan to the club. This was a great gesture and one we need to allow the club to prosper. We also agreed at the meeting that we would have a social night to celebrate the start of the new season and that it should have a bring a friend theme to get more social people involved in the club. I will also be suggesting new tariffs at the AGM that allow for social mem-bers at a lower rate and also the implementation of a tractor key fee in line with other clubs. On the racing front Amy Clarke and Alex Benny are going to Las Vegas in April for a training camp organized by the Karl Brooks memorial fund and they will benefit from sessions with the top American skiers so we all wish them a great trip. They will be joined by Scott Gibbons who we hope will look after them but I suspect it will be the other way around !! Good luck to all of you… As ever there are rumours about boats and teams abound so we will just have to wait and see who ends up where, with who and behind what !!! Anybody know any more stories ?? Lets all look forward to a great spring and summer and ALL help to really get the club a happy and bustling one with plenty of fun and activity on and off the water.

KERRYS 40th

Kerry Clarke celebrated the big 4-0 last year, it happens to the best of us, both myself and Tony also joined the club! Kerry Decided to celebrate before her actual birthday as they were due to be on holiday for the big event, so

every man and his dog it seems was invited to some drinking establishment (cant remember where!) It was good that the older members of the club had been catered for with a Stannah stair lift (for Greener) The disco/karaoke was ably hosted by Ken from the Pavilion and many a wailing tune was belted out with

Page 5: Skiline February 2009

KERRYS 40th

Kerry dancing to nearly all of these tunes. The cheap beer went down well, especially with me! The half t ime show comprised a group of male strippers who weren’t exactly the Chippendales, in fact they should have been called “the cheap and frails” Steve, John and Karl did not need much encouragement to get their clothes off and Kerry was so embarrassed she hid in a corner and covered her eyes! NOT! We were thankfully spared

the full Monty but this would not have been the case if Kerry had got her way. It all seems such a long time ago now and it was but with Photo’s like these they needed to be shared.

Page 6: Skiline February 2009

The club has decided to

try again this year and

organise some more social

events.

The challenge then comes

back to you all to support

these events and come

along and enjoy yourselves,

maybe not as much as

Kerry did on her 40th

though!

If you have any ideas for

Page 7: Skiline February 2009

social events you would

like to see contact Sarah

Benny.

Rest assured I will attend

as many as possible and

will endeavour to have at

least one camera with me!

You to could then feature

in he club‟s newsletter or

if your really lucky, on the

website…..

Chris.

PRESIDENTS PRATTLE

Must be time for another newsletter, so happy New Year and may 2009 eventually bring some decent boating weather at weekends and not mid week. Obviously a good time to remind everyone the Club is here to help, as Grimer has just put his boat in for the First of the year and also some may need guidance on what to do if the boat has a problem. From conversations in the Pub ,dinged props are best sorted by Prop Revolutions and Steve Benny has the contact. In fairness whatever you want the prop to do they will organise it. From extra speed to better pullout etc. I'm pretty sure Steve asked them for one that did cartwheels for one race but that's another story. For engines and general stuff Rob Jenkins is well qualified in repairs and getting the best out of it. Luckily the days of chewing gum and sticky tape are long gone! He is excellent on Inboards and outboards, so give him a shout for knowledge or let him do the necessary. Most of us have some knowledge and some more than

others (more than me definitely), so any probs just ask. Having been to the Knightstone users committee and water safety meetings I am assured that the permit scheme will remain as last year in price and admin. However due to the sea defence works trailer parking might be a bit tight or even moved for a short period, but we will be given plenty of notice. The only other thing that will be needed is that when you are moving the boat with the tractor on the prom one of the crew should always act as a marshal (Just sitting in boat and shouting like me isn't what the HSE meant). It's not mandatory yet but if we do it will be one step ahead of the council. As there's talk of another Tractor I've sent a pic of Arnold which had to be the

prettiest (most vicious) launch vehicle we had. Where ever he is now he still has bits of Solly, me and the late Andy Mewse on him. Note whatever happens, if there is a new vehicle you will all have to retrain on it, as we have to confirm to the insurers and council that you are suitably qualified to Club standard. As we have a National Race this year again hopefully you will all be at the Feb AGM to pledge your support and maybe volunteer your services to the main committee. We are still looking for a sponsor as far as I am aware ,and although these are difficult times hopefully someone will come forward. Obviously the sea defence works wont make life easy but as we have bid we will make an excellent job as usual. Can't tell you who is behind who at the moment, but as it's Worlds year I'm sure it will be interesting. I'll leave Tim to tell you about all the socials past and future and hope the future ones are great fun. One final bit of info is that the Council intends to give the jet skiers an area in the harbour between the pier and the moorings so they can play. This will be buoyed off and possibly extra buoys in the middle of is so there's a course. The only thing to affect us will be power turning in the harbour and dropping off skiers, but as this can be done near the small slip it's probably better than them playing out to sea. They need to be permit holders anyway so the control factor is there and maybe they will join the Club as well. Have a good season and see you on the front. Rich Green.

This may be an old picture but for

those that don‟t remember this is

the clubs old launch vehicle

affectionately called “Well „Ard” it

was not a vehicle to get on the

wrong side of, the hand cranked

starter handle was a knightmare if

it decided to kick back!!!

WESTON BAY WATER SPORTS CLUB

The Skiline is the newsletter for members and is compiled every other month with contributions from the committee as well as

members. If you would like to include anything in “The Skiline” drop an email

to [email protected] and I will include it in the next issue. To keep costs down this e-newsletter is published online

SEARCH FOR A COVER STAR

Hopefully you all like the new look to the Skiline, Any feedback would be gratefully received, as we only send out via email now I thought I would take the opportunity to give the newsletter a new look and with the addition of the new online viewer I have tried to recreate the look of a magazine. Please let me know what you think, John Grimes has been lucky enough to grace the front cover of the first issue, the challenge is who will be on issue two? So over to you all, send me a photo of a club member and If chosen they will adorn the next edition. They do not have to be skiing or even doing anything to do with the club, this is just meant to be a bit of fun so the world is your oyster so to speak. If I do not get any photo’s I will use one of my own but be warned I have a hell of a lot of dodgy photo’s and it could be you! Chris.
