Skin Facts
• Skin is our largest organ—adults have around 8 pounds (3.6 kilograms) and 22 square feet (2 square meters) of it
• Thickest part of the skin is the palms of the hand and soles of the feet
• Thinnest areas are the eyelids and back of the hands

What are Work Related Skin Problems?
• Work-related skin problems are caused or made worse by coming into contact with things like chemicals or by having wet hands for long periods
• Dermatitis is a common skin condition but rashes, skin cancer and exposure to the sun can also cause problems

2 types of contact dermatitis:
• allergic dermatitis - this happens when your immune system reacts against a specific substance
• irritant dermatitis - this is caused by a substance that damages the skin when you come into direct contact with it

• Strength of substance – is it high concentration
• Duration of contact – how long is it in contact with your skin
• Frequency of contact – how often do you come into contact with the substance
• Know where the COSSH sheets are stored or have access to Sypol
• Awareness of first aid measures to take should an accident occur
