Our two well known stars are in the news again. After hatching their plan to rebuild the cen-tury old Jetty, Tommy Evans and Barry Hunt have hit the silver screen. On Thursday 5th

February at Saltburn Community Thea-tre an animated film “welcome to the future” showed Tommy & Barry’s vi-sion of what can be done to the Jetty. It shows a representation of what it might look like, Victorian lamps, seating for visitors and a fishing area. Pleasure boats could visit the village’s cultural and industrial heritage sights such as the Mining Museum; who knows what this might lead to? Local MP Ashok Kumar said “It’s been left to crumble, which is a crying shame seeing that if

restored it could be a tourist attraction and a magnet for local fisherman. This animation gives the message to potential funders that there is a worthwhile project that needs back-ing.” The evening was also attended by his worshipfulness the mayor of Redcar & Cleveland, who expressed the council’s support for the project. Steve Thompson of the Institute of Digital Innovation at the University of Teesside was seconded to the Destination @ Saltburn, Digital Vil-lages project. In this capacity he worked with Tommy and Barry to create the virtual jetty that featured in the film. You can see the film on the Evening Gazette website: www.gazettelive.co.uk

Update from The Environment Agency

Since the last Skinningrove newsletter, our Flood Risk Management teams have been working hard towards finalising plans and maintenance schedules for the pro-posed tree catcher. We have been working closely with our consultant on the design of the new tree/log catcher. We are coming to the end of the design phase and aim to have detailed drawings soon. We are yet to secure funding for the actual con-struction, but are hopeful that this will be carried out sometime within the next financial year. We have consulted with planners, landowners, local resi-

dents and those directly affected by the catcher’s proposed location, which is just upstream of the A174 road bridge. Once the final design has been completed, we will begin a final consul-tation process to ensure everyone’s needs have been addressed as much as possible. We are continuing to work with Derek Mosey, a local artist who is suggesting various artistic designs that could be linked into the catcher’s design. Derek’s designs are nearing completion and we are looking forward to looking over his proposals in the near future. Operations Delivery (Technical Support) has been working with Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council to formally set up a partnership agreement between the council and the agency. This agreement outlines the plans for the preventative maintenance schedule and basic incident re-sponse. In detail, it describes which stretch of the watercourse is to be checked and cleared of any debris and which structures require regular maintenance and what form this maintenance will be. This is work in progress. A draft has recently been given to the council for their comment, re-view and input. We are hoping to have the full agreement in place by the end of March 2009. The agreement will help to clarify roles and allocate resources in order to reduce the flood risk in the village. Finally, you may have heard the flood warning siren that we tested on 4th February at about 11am. This siren will be tested two times per year to ensure there are no problems with it. Each time we test the siren, we will inform you so you know not to take action. It sounds for about 2 minutes and if you like more information about this please call 0191 203 4333. We will continue to keep you updated with the progress of this project and if you would like more information please email Nigel Darling at [email protected]

Easter 2009

As this issue of Skinningrove News is being put together in the grip of a very cold February it’s tempting to look forward to our next public holiday at Easter. This year Easter Day is on Sunday

12th April, three weeks later than in 2008: why is this? Well, this all goes back to the Synod of Whitby (Yes Whitby!) which decreed that Easter Day will fall on the first Sunday fol-

lowing the first full moon after the spring equinox (which is when day and night are of equal length) which is usually

around the 21st of March. The date for Easter Day also deter-mines the date of other events – such as Shrove Tuesday and

Mothering Sunday (22nd March this year) – so that Moon’s got a lot to answer for!

If you’ve been along to the Ochre Café at the Riverside Building recently, you’ll have no-ticed a change. Laura King has taken over the reins! Laura has a historical link with the café as her grandma Glenda used to run it as a private concern some years ago. At this time she worked on reception as well as helping Glenda in the café so it’s obviously in the blood! Combine this with a love of baking that her gran passed on to her when Laura was only five. She gained experience in the Hart Inn at Sandsend and Harry’s Bar in Whitby. When she heard the previous manager was leaving she spoke to gran who encouraged her to take up the challenge! Although Laura has only been in her new role for a few weeks she has already made changes. She is putting on food to appeal to all age ranges. Meals for children and toasted sand-wiches are proving popular, and takeaway food is now available. Laura uses local suppliers where possible such as meat from Loftus, vegetables from Easington and bread from Danby. In the future Laura aims to produce and deliver healthy and nourishing takeaway meals for those who have difficulty in visiting the café or busy mums who don’t have the time to cook. She also wants to draw visitors such as walkers, school groups and users of the Mining Museum to the Riverside Building.

The Ochre Café is open from 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday.

There is no need to book unless you are in a large group. If you have any dietary needs Laura will be happy to help.

Her phone number is 07804 395101.

Tackling Anti-Social Behaviour

You may not be aware that the Borough Council employs someone with the responsibility for tackling antisocial behaviour in Skinningrove and the rest of East Cleveland. Amy Kenny works with Police, Police Community Support Officers, Community Protection teams and residents in a partnership ap-proach to tackle what she considers to be “behaviour that causes harassment, alarm or distress to oth-ers”. The Antisocial Behaviour team focus on both prevention and enforcement and deal with a wide spec-trum of problems such as verbal abuse, low level disorder, gang nuisance and neighbour nuisance. The officers have use of a range of powers such as fixed penalty notices, Acceptable Behaviour Agreements (ABAs) and Antisocial Behaviour Orders (ASBOs) which can be issued to anyone from the age of 10. Amy wishes to stress that ASBOs are a last resort and being issued with an ASBO does not count as possessing a criminal record unless its conditions are breached. Amy and colleagues try to focus on prevention by visiting schools and youth centres to educate and divert young people from antisocial behaviour as well as patrolling communities and visiting ward sur-geries. If you experience behaviour that causes you harassment, alarm or distress or know someone who is a victim of anti-social behaviour please phone Amy, in confidence, on 01642 774774.

Village Hall News

Doris Shaw Doris, what can I say about Doris? I feel that she deserves a mention in our Newsletter. Doris was born in Skinningrove, and she died in Skinningrove. The hours of pleasure Doris gave to people by singing in Skinningrove Workingmen’s Club, she was a pleasure to listen to, and could have gone a lot further if she had left the Village. We remember when she moved in with Doll, her friend when her husband died, and they became two of Skinningrove’s characters. If ever you felt down you paid them a visit, you always came out with a smile on your face. Sadly Doll died and Doris became a recluse, but when she got back into village life, she did the best she could to keep things going. She supported Riverside and the Village Hall. She couldn’t resist a child pass-ing by and giving them money for sweets. She is sadly missed but we know somewhere she is with Doll, and they will be causing havoc wherever they are.

Sadly missed by her friends at the Village Hall R.I.P.

Happy New Year to all our friends at Village Hall, I hope you all had a good Christmas and that the year ahead brings you all you could wish for. Did any of you see the boys do the boxing day dip, what brave people they were, and they went in twice, they then came up to the hall for hot soup and refreshments, all provided by a very kind hearted lady (she knows who she is). There was a pretty good turn out for them, and it hasn’t put them off at all, they intend to do it again, needless to say the village hall committee are so proud of them, and the girls tell us this is just the start of things to come. A couple of the girls, when they first joined us were under the impression that the hall was for the older generation, and they have been pleasantly surprised to realize it is there for all ages, and we welcome any age group. The nutty knitters are still going strong, you don’t have to knit you can do any craft you want, so if you fancy why not give it a try. It really is a fun night, good lunch on a Wednesday and coffee morning on a Friday and bingo on Friday evenings, that’s for now, but more to come. Once again you dippers well done.

Lynn Findlay

Many congratulations To Beryl McConnell for raising £220 for Cancer Research. Beryl held a fund raising Bingo afternoon at the Village Hall on Saturday 7th February. Ably assisted by son Alan & Jean England. Thanks to them all.
