Many of us welcomed 2010 with open arms. 2009 was a tough year for everyone economically and took its toll on our country, companies and local agencies. When we rang in 2010, we did so with a new sense of resilience and spirit.

For SkiTAM, in addition to celebrating our 15-year anniversary, adding to the excitement of the new year was that 2010 was a Paralympic year. A landmark that comes around only once every four years occurred precisely when the country could use something inspirational to look forward to. As expected, we had a vivacious group of SkiTAM loyalists travel to Vancouver, B.C., to cheer our Paralympians to victory. The athletes braved unprecedentedly challenging conditions on the mountain and Nordic track, as well as grueling training and regimens, to bring home 12 Paralympic medals.

After leaving Vancouver, we were reminded that most of these athletes are only able to compete in the Paralympic Games due to the supporters of SkiTAM. This reality check does not take into consideration the financial support we provide to attend the races leading up to the games, training camps, pricy equipment and more. Thanks to your support, for 15 years we have underwritten these efforts with great honor and pride.

To learn more about SkiTAM and get details on how we fund the U.S. Adaptive Ski Team, log on to www.skitam.com. There, you will also find information on how to become a sponsor or upgrade your sponsorship so that you can further

help these athletes in their quest to be the best in the world. There, you can also link to the U.S. Adaptive Ski Team (USAST) website and follow the team’s progress through the upcoming race season.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you. Thank you for your time, your contribution and your unwavering support of SkiTAM for the past 15 years. It’s because of you that the USAST athletes are able to fulfill their dreams and represent the USA in adaptive skiing around the world.

We hope to see you from March 31 to April 3 in Vail for the 16th annual SkiTAM. In the meantime, join us in wishing the U.S. Adaptive Ski Team luck and safe travels.

MissionSkiTAM, an event organized and hosted by CTAM of the Rocky Mountains, exists to provide financial support for the courageous and dedicated athletes selected to compete on the U.S. Adaptive Ski Team (USAST), allowing them to compete in world-class events and to focus on their skiing careers instead of financial obstacles.

What is SkiTAM?The three-day event brings together more than a thousand communications executives and their families from all over the country and is widely recognized as one of the industry’s top-ranked business-networking opportunities. Thanks to SkiTAM sponsors, corporate donors to the Athlete Partnership Program and individual donations, the fundraiser in Vail, Colorado, provides more than 80 percent of the operating budget for the USAST, enabling it to remain the top ski team in the world for skiers with physical disabilities.

Every athlete on the USAST is paired with a cable industry sponsor team, which allows the athlete to build a connection with the executives on his or her sponsor team. This connection has grown over the years and has brought the same sponsor back year after year. 2010, marking the 15th annual SkiTAM, had 999 participants and 57 industry-leading sponsors.

HistoryIn 1995, CTAM of the Rocky Mountains wanted to create an event that could raise money for a worthy cause and become a signature event for the chapter. A group of industry members charged with creating the event learned that the USAST had lost its funding and was in danger of discontinuing. Compared to other organizations also being considered, CTAM-RM leadership agreed that the USAST was the charity they would support via an event that would draw national industry attendance and raise the much-needed funds for the team.

CTAM’s national board agreed to lend seed money to launch the program, and the first SkiTAM was held in Vail in 1996. The event attracted 110 attendees and raised $100,000 for the team. The SkiTAM support helped secure the U.S. Adaptive Ski Team’s role within the U.S. Ski and Snowboard

Association (USSA) and began a tradition of providing these dedicated athletes with the opportunity to compete in the world’s top competitions.

Today, through its annual donation, SkiTAM serves as the source for more than 80 percent of the operating budget for the USAST. Held annually in Vail SkiTAM has also grown to represent one of the cable industry’s top business-networking events, attracting an impressive list of communications industry executives from all over the country and multiple sponsors that support the U.S. Adaptive Ski Team and its activities.

No Excuses UnlimitedSkiTAM partners with No Excuses Unlimited to provide the opportunity for the event’s sponsors and participants to make tax-deductible donations. No Excuses Unlimited is a 501(c)(3) organization and meets the public support tests of IRS Standards Section 509(a)(1). Its mission is to foster national and international adaptive skiing at elite levels. The board and advisers include a number of longtime SkiTAM supporters, including Trygve Myhren, Chuck Ellis and members of the SkiTAM steering committee. Financial SummaryOnce again SkiTAM supporters stepped up to the plate and proved naysayers wrong. In an economy where money remains tight and community funding has been drastically cut, SkiTAM came out of the 2010 event ahead of the game.

The 15th annual SkiTAM had 999 participants and 57 industry sponsors. Held April 8–11, in Vail, Colorado, SkiTAM 2010 generated $1,046,618 in total revenue. After covering event expenses, the SkiTAM steering committee approved a donation of $513,500 to the U.S. Adaptive Ski Team, leaving it with $14,041 in working capital for organizing the 2011 event.

2010 SkiTAM Highlights

Since 1996, SkiTAM has been a weekend where industry members and their families converge in Vail to help support the USAST, recognize their achievements from the previous year and celebrate the end of a rigorous months-long training and competitive season. 2010 was no exception.

Tribute to Rob and Danelle UmsteadThis year, we were able to hear directly from athletes who medaled in the Vancouver Paralympic Games. Here is one of the stories.

The life of Rob and Danelle Umstead may seem typical at first glance but, if you take a closer look, they are far from ordinary. Danelle is a visually impaired skier, and Rob is more than just her husband and best friend; he is her guide. Five years ago they decided to embark on a journey that many saw as unattainable. However, along the way they beat the odds, fell in love, got married at the top of a mountain, had a son, formed a racing team, won a World Cup and, most recently, won two bronze medals at the 2010 Winter Paralympics in Vancouver, Canada.

Before the success in their life, both on and off the course, Rob and Danelle were just two people who fell in love. As Danelle began skiing more frequently to keep her mind off the fact that retinitis pigmentosa (RP) was slowly blinding her, the couple decided it might be fun to compete in the sport they loved. Despite no formal training, the two began training together and quickly discovered that the unmasked chemistry and trust they have for each other as husband and wife translates perfectly into their relationship as guide and racer.

By 2008, the Umsteads made the U.S. team but chose not to compete until the last race of the year. Although they did not medal, it taught them they were not far from success. Through trials and tribulations and mid-mountain meltdowns, Danelle and Rob never gave up. Danelle’s determination and Rob’s resolute support eventually earned them podium medals, capturing bronze in both the downhill and super combined in the 2010 Winter Paralympics.

Danelle embodies the willpower of the U.S. Adaptive Ski Team and its members. As they enter their second year of competitions, the Umsteads remain as committed as ever to each other and the pursuit of gold. And just like Rob and

Danelle have been doing for more than five years, they’ll not only do it together; they’ll figure it out as they go.

Congratulations to the Newest Inductees in the National Ski and Snowboard Hall of FameDuring SkiTAM’s activities on Friday evening, three SkiTAM vets were conspicuously absent. Chris Waddell, Sarah Will and Jack Benedick were unable to join us because they were in Beaver Creek being inducted into the U.S. National Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame.

Chris, Sarah and Jack joined five able-bodied skiers and snowboarders for this year’s inductee class. They’re the first adaptive skiers to be inducted into the Hall of Fame since 1997.

While they were sorely missed on Friday evening, we’d like to congratulate Chris, Sarah and Jack on an outstanding career and for paving the way for today’s adaptive skiers. They are true trailblazers, and we’re proud to have them as part of the SkiTAM family.

SkiTAM Invades VancouverFor the fourth consecutive Paralympic games, members of the SkiTAM steering committee and SkiTAM supporters headed to Vancouver, British Columbia, to support the athletes as they battled for the gold.

In total, 40 SkiTAM loyalists braved the cold and fog to cheer on the USAST members and attend the podium ceremonies. They were constantly updating the AdaptiveSpirit website, as well as Facebook and Twitter accounts, keeping those unable to make the trip up to

date with real-time information—a first for SkiTAM at the Paralympics. This Paralympic Game also garnered more national media attention than in years past, including hours of live coverage in Canada and highlights shown on NBC and NBC Universal Sports in the United States.

This Paralympics showcased the fastest athletes and fostered an intensely competitive atmosphere. The U.S. teams finished fifth in gold medals won and sixth overall in total medal count. SkiTAM would like to congratulate all competing athletes and thank all the sponsors who helped the athletes compete among the world’s best.

SkiTAM Takes on the Social Media SphereThis year, SkiTAM began announcing its presence in the social networking world. You can read more about SkiTAM and the USAST, and see results from the 2010 adult and kids’ races at www.skitam.com. We also encourage you to connect with us online; join AdaptiveSpirit on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn and Posterous.

Leaning Over the Edge? What Do You See?This year, the Thursday-afternoon marketing panel focused on what might happen when the universe of video is available all the time on an on demand basis with nothing more than a broadband connection. Consumer electronic manufacturers, start-ups and hackers are already seeing a world without coax to their TV. What lies ahead and how does this impact revenue models for content creators and operators? Moderated by Paul Maxwell, preeminent cable journalist from Media Biz Corp, the panel heard the perspective

of the marketing, hardware, engineering and content provider segments. The panel included Todd Dubester, VP Global Distribution Strategy, The Walt Disney Company; Ross Honey, General Manager, Content Acquisition & Strategy, Entertainment & Devices Division, Microsoft Corporation; Sam Howe, EVP & CMO, Time Warner Cable; Steve Necessary, VP Video Product Management, Cox Communications; and Stephen Goldstein, VP Business Development, Samsung. The panel was well received by attendees, and the steering committee is committed to providing more events of this kind in the future to ensure our reputation as a business event that has a better-than-average return on investment of time and finances.

Athlete Partnership ProgramAn additional $152,461 was raised in 2010 for the USAST athletes through the Athlete Partnership Program (APP). The APP reflects the interest of SkiTAM participants to provide financial support for individual athletes they connect with during SkiTAM. In addition to donations from five corporate donors, the APP’s 2010 fund-raising activities included the SkiTAM silent auction and the ARRIS-sponsored Rack ’Em Poker and Pool Tournament. APP is administered by No Excuses Unlimited.
