Important Changes

12

New Roles

Important Changes

13

• As part of the Skype for Business release, a new server role is available for

legacy video interoperability (VIS), which will be deployed on premises or in the

on premises part of a hybrid deployment

• VIS is a software solution “built in” to Skype for Business and is scalable

• VIS allows customers who have large deployments of Cisco VTCs in their

enterprises and are migrating to Skype for Business to make use of their existing

investment in these VTCs

• VIS simplifies interoperability and eliminates the need for third party infrastructure

• With VIS, the VTC can join a Skype for Business meeting as an audio/video

endpoint and be displayed in the video gallery

• The Skype for Business meeting experience is consistent and familiar to users

• Peer to peer audio/video calls are supported as well

Enhanced

manageability

approaches

Important Changes

22

• More convenient upgrade path from

Lync Server 2013 to Skype for Business by:

• Preserving existing hardware/server investments

• Smoother upgrade process without extensive planning

• Reducing the overall cost for deployment

• The goal of heading towards Smart setup

• Upgrade path

InPlace upgrade

Lync 2013Skype for Business + Lync 2013

Yes—in-place upgrade support from 2013 -> Skype for Business

Lync 2010Skype for Business + Lync 2010

No—migrate from 2010 -> Skype for Business, same as 2010 -> 2013

Lync coexistence (2013 + 2010)

Skype for Business + Lync 2013

Mandatory migration from 2010 -> 2013 before deploying Skype for Business—then in-place upgrade from 2013 to Skype for Business

23

• SQL Server AlwaysOn HA solutions

• Next generation of database mirroring technologies

• Provides high availability and disaster recovery in SQL

• Introduced in SQL Server 2012 and present in SQL Server 2014

• Runs on top of WSFC (Windows Server Failover Clustering)

• AlwaysOn advantages

• Latest and greatest SQL HA solution

• Although database mirroring is still available in its original feature set, it is now considered a

deprecated feature and will be removed in a future release of SQL Server

• More reliable

• AlwaysOn (One Primary, can have up to three corresponding secondary replicas)

• Mirroring (One Primary, One Mirror)

• Multi-database failovers

• Useful in applications with several databases

• Databases can be added to an availability group that can be failed over between replicas

• All databases in availability group are failed over at the same time

SQL AlwaysOn

24

• Simplified workflow leverages Windows Fabric v2: four

steps

Invoke—CsComputerFailOver to fail over (stop) a front end; take the FE out of rotation, move

the replicas out

perform patching/upgrade

Invoke—CsComputerFailBack to fail back (start) a front end; bring FE into active state, move

replicas in

Do this for all frontends in the pool

• How‘s this better?

Simpler workflow; fewer commands; less errors

Faster—2-3 hours for 12 FE pool (down from 8-12hours)

More reliable

Checks for readiness across the pool within the cmdlet before fail over

Leverages windows fabric (min. v2)/v3 deactivate/activate node APIs ensuring more dependable

operation

(moving replicas in/out, not move replicas into node going down)

Since scope is always one frontend, avoids situations where multiple frontends could be down

within a pool (reason servers don’t start)

Will not allow fail over of a server if there are existing replica issues in the pool

Progress indicators

Simplified Patching

25

• Check with Microsoft update for Skype for Business updates

• Download the updates

• Install them (prior to finishing the installation process)

Smart setup

26

Call via Work

Important Changes

27

• Enterprise Voice for PBX Users

• Skype for Business users can make voice calls using any PSTN phone, including existing PBX

endpoints

• Leverages existing Direct SIP connectivity between PBX systems and Lync/Skype for Business

• User experience

• Skype for Business dials out to PSTN or desk phone number to connect user, then connects with

far-end destination

• Features

• Presence update and call control from Skype for Business client

• Mid-call control capabilities preserved on PBX phone

2. Skype for Business client places call to user’s PBX station set (or to any other PSTN phone number)

3. PBX routes call and local user answers

4. When Skype for Business client sees this call answered, places far-end call. Here Skype for Business will use PBX user’s DID as ANI

5. PBX routes call out to PSTN with user’s DID (or to any other local PBX endpoint)

6. Far-end call answers and call is established, with Skype for Business acting as control channel

Delivering inbound calls to Skype for Business client

and PBX phone

• Need to consider both calls from PSTN and calls from other Skype for Business users

• Forward and simultaneous settings are tied with activation of CvW feature

• If using CvW for outbound, incoming calls automatically forward/simulring to client and configured

PBX phone

Configured DID # for both user and PBX phone is the same

• Using ms-skipRnl header for the PBX phone number with the simulring settings for CvW

33

1. User B calls user A from Skype for

Business client or PBX phone

2. PBX or Skype for Business Server

receives the call (depending on

who originated the call—see

below)

3. If Skype for Business Server

receives the call, user A’s endpoint

is alerted. Since user A is enabled

for CvW and set to simulring their

own desk phone, the ms-skipRnl

header is used to force another call

out to user A’s desk phone

4. If PBX receives the call, PBX rings

the desk phone of user A as shown
