The importance of quality in the contemporary compeve business environment cannot be over emphasized. Total Quality Management (TQM), is a company – wide, all pervasive management philosophy, which organisaons globally, in many business sectors have embraced, in the aempt to enhance their compeve abilies and provide strategic advantages in the market. TQM, rooted in the core principles of employee focus, customer focus and connuous improvement, creates a quality culture where all employees work towards meeng and exceeding customer expectaons.

Deming Prize The Deming Prize, is the ulmate recognion of TQM praconers in the world. The award scheme was established in 1951, in commemoraon of the late Dr. William Edwards Deming, whose efforts aer World War II, contributed greatly to Japan's product quality being recognized as the world's best. In appreciaon of Dr. Deming's unique contribuon, the Japanese Union of Sciensts and Engineers (JUSE) established the Deming Prize. This presgious global quality award, recognizes effecve quality management program development and implementaon by an organisaon, regardless of the types of business, public or private, large or small, Japanese or overseas, or part of or enre organisaon.

The unique characterisc of the Deming Prize is that it does not require applicants to conform to any specific model prescribed by the Deming Prize Commiee. Instead, the applicants are expected to understand their own current situaon, establish conducive themes and objecves and improve and transform themselves organizaon- wide. The award focuses beyond implementaon and results and also looks to the connued future effecveness.

The award criteria consider whether the organisaon has clear management policies and has established proacve customer driven objecves and strategies based on social responsibility of the organisaon. The examinaon process will probe whether TQM principles are being suitably ulized and implemented for the realizaon of business objecves and strategies and whether organisaonal ability for future growth has been aptly secured.

The Deming Prize, promong TQM in both theorecal and praccal plaorms, makes its awards in 4 categories. The first two categories recognise individuals or groups. who have made outstanding contribuons to the study of TQM or those who have made outstanding contribuons in the disseminaon of TQM. The third category - The Deming Prize, is for organizaons that have implemented TQM suitable for their management philosophy, scope, type, scale of business and management environment. The culminaon of this award scheme is the Deming Grand Prize, which is for organizaons that had already received the Deming Prize or the Deming Grand Prize, for maintaining and further enhancing the level of TQM for more than three years aer winning the Deming Prize.

Sri Lanka Associaon for the Advancement of Quality and Producvity (SLAAQP) was founded in 1996 and was the successor to the Quality Circle Associaon of Sri Lanka, which had been established in 1989. Since then the associaon has immensely contributed to the Quality and producvity of Sri Lanka.
