Welcome to Sleepover Miami, the fifth in our series of ‘inventive events for hotel innovators’. Following previous outings in Berlin, Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Istanbul we are delighted to be hosting our first event in the US, and especially thrilled to be here in Miami – not only one of the world’s best known destinations for hospitality innovation, but also increasingly recognised as a global capital for architecture, design, art, food and drink.

As in previous years, we hope to provide a platform for our guests to meet in a less formal environment than traditional hotel industry events, in inspirational surroundings. Our programme aims to take you not just to the beach, with tours and networking events at many of the most exciting new hotels to have opened here in recent years, but beyond, to the new districts and neighbourhoods shaping the city’s future. We have extended our usual 24 hour timeframe to give you more time to explore the city outside our core programme. To this end, you’ll find a link to a Google Map of places to check out in your spare time in your welcome email. Finally, I would like to thank our many partners and collaborators in Miami for welcoming us to their wonderful city, as well as our sponsors and attendees for their support. We hope you enjoy attending Sleepover as much as we’ve enjoyed creating it.

Guests at Sleepover Miami will be accommodated at The Hall, the new bohemian South Beach boutique hotel by Joie de Vivre.

This classic 1940s Art Deco hotel has been transformed by Studio Robert McKinley. He has drawn inspiration from Miami’s mid-century beach culture as well as Caribbean and Latin American destinations to create a ‘tropical vintage’ design which celebrates the heritage of the building while incorporating a playful and casual beach vibe. Its supersized pool (one of the largest in Miami) is surrounded by palm trees and chic cabanas.

Bordering Collins and Washington Avenues, the hotel’s location places it in the heart of South Beach’s Art Deco District just one block from the ocean, and steps away from Lincoln Road and Ocean Drive.

Food and beverage are overseen by celebrated chef and avid surfer Spike Mendelsohn who has taken inspiration from his extensive travels to hip beach hangouts around the world.

Spike’s creations include Sunny’s, a casual courtyard restaurant named after his grandfather, and Campton Yard, a backyard hangout with tree-hung string lighting, social games, and picnic tables where locally brewed beers, craft cocktails and beach bites are served.

On Sunday afternoon, following lunch, three separate groups will depart by coach from The Hall to tour four of the hottest new hotels to open on Miami Beach over the past 18 months.

1 Hotel South Beach is the debut hotel from the new eco-luxury brand created by Barry Sternlicht, Chairman and CEO of Starwood Capital. A luxury lifestyle hotel brand inspired by nature, 1 Hotel was developed with the simple idea that those who travel the world also care about it. 1 Hotel upholds this vision by channelling nature through design, culinary partnerships, connecting with the local community and taking small steps to make a big difference.

“It’s simple. We have an impact on nature and nature has an impact on us. I decided that if I was ever going to create another hotel, I wanted it to be more than a brand; I wanted it to be a cause. People are already living like this and are now looking for ways to travel in the same fashion,” says Sternlicht. “At first, our guests may simply notice the graceful twist of driftwood in the furnishings. However, what we are really offering is an evolution of the entire hotel experience, one that is more natural in regards to the way we arrive, sleep, eat, relax and do.”

Our tours of 1 Hotel South Beach will be hosted by its designers Will Meyer and Gray Davis of Meyer Davis, and Liubasha Rose of Rose Ink Workshop, who led the project for Starwood Capital.

HOTEL TOURS – SUNDAY

1 HOTEL SOUTH BEACH

Page 10: Sleepover Miami

The Confidante originally launched in 2014 as Thompson Miami Beach, before its recent acquisition by Hyatt Hotels Corporation from an affiliate of Geolo Capital. The hotel has now been rebranded as The Confidante, joining the existing properties in the recently launched The Unbound Collection by Hyatt brand, and retaining its mid-century modern design, by Martin Brudnizki Design Studio.

The Confidante is a three-towered property that pays homage to the vibrant feeling of the city in the 1950s. Serving at one time as the tallest modern building in Miami Beach, The Confidante originally opened as the 18-storey Lord Tarleton Hotel on Collins Avenue, making headlines and representing a boom for the city’s economy. In 1955, it reopened as the Crown Hotel and later was converted into a three-tower apartment building, before its launch as a Thompson hotel.

It now features 380 guestrooms, two restaurants, two heated swimming pools, direct beach access, a rooftop spa, a full service salon, an indoor/outdoor fitness experience, in-room dining, a craft cocktail bar, and a lush tropical garden. It will also house approximately 35,000+ ft2 of indoor and outdoor flexible, multi-functional venue space.

Described as a “next-generation urban resort” the Miami Beach Edition was opened in 2015 by Ian Schrager in partnership with Marriott International, with interiors by Yabu Pushelberg.

Located in the Mid-Beach area, the historic heart of Miami Beach between North Beach and South Beach, the hotel sits on a three and a half-acre private enclave stretching from Collins Avenue to the ocean shoreline. The project represents a careful renovation of the historic Seville Hotel, built in 1955, which was for many years a global playground for the rich and famous, and one of the most prestigious hotels in the Mid-Beach area.

The Miami Beach Edition is an elegantly designed, intricately interlinked complex of structures, spaces and settings that together offer a new kind of resort environment. Every aspect of the traditional beach hotel has been reimagined for the needs of a new generation, with emphasis on enhancing a guest’s stay for relaxation or for work.

The hotel comprises 294 individually designed guestrooms and suites, including 28 private bungalows, and a spectacular rooftop penthouse, together with an unusually wide array of public spaces, dining and drinking places, landscape and resort features, event rooms, entertainment hub, and other amenities.

Following Sunday afternoon’s tours, all guests will be transported to The Freehand Miami for an hour of cocktails and light bites, during which time optional design tours for small groups will also be available.

Described as the first “upscale hostel in the US”, Freehand incorporates handcrafted interiors by Roman and Williams and a comfortable community atmosphere at an affordable price. A reinvention of the historic Indian Creek Hotel, one of Miami Beach’s classic 1930s Art Deco buildings, Freehand is centrally located just a block from the beach at the corner of 28th Street and Indian Creek Drive.

The hostel offers 287 beds divided among 81 rooms, including both private and shared accommodations. The property also features a swimming pool and lush courtyard, bocce courts, ping pong, and bicycles for guests. Food and drink is by Bar Lab, who run acclaimed cocktail bar The Broken Shaker as well as restaurant and bar 27, the location for our cocktail hour.

Freehand is owned by Sydell Group, the New York-based owner, developer, and manager of lifestyle-oriented hotels, including NoMad NYC, the Line LA and Saguaro Palm Springs. It is developing further Freehand and NoMad properties in LA, as well as the new Soho House project at 27 Poultry in London and a Line hotel in Washington DC.

THE FREEHAND MIAMI

Page 18: Sleepover Miami

Following drinks at Freehand, guests will be transported back to The Hall for a couple of hours downtime, during which optional design tours with Studio Robert McKinley will be available (see blackboards in the lobby or ask a member of staff for details).

A short walk along Collins Avenue will then take us to our dinner desintation for the evening. Nautilus is the latest property from SIXTY Hotels. Originally designed by famed architect Morris Lapidus in the 1950s, it has been renovated paying homage to its original spirit. Revealing an extensive evolution of what the property once was, Nautilus features a comfortable design that emulates a luxury beach house with public spaces, rooms and suites that have an international and residential feel.

SIXTY Hotels Co-Founder Jason Pomeranc will welcome guests to The Driftwood Room, which offers Mediterranean cuisine with fresh Floridian ingredients by celebrity chef Alex Guarnaschelli. The restaurant boasts a private dining room for 16 and an outdoor terrace spanning 1,950ft2.

Chef Guarnaschelli’s menu features creative updates on simple dishes made with locally sourced ingredients, marrying the cuisine of Southern France with a Miami palate. Our Monday activities commence with transportation to Faena District Miami Beach. Representing a US$1 billion investment, this is an entirely new neighbourhood with art and culture at its core. Faena Hotel Miami Beach, a conversion of the Saxony Hotel, is at the heart of the new district – only the second to be officially designed as such in Miami’s history.

Other highlights include Faena Forum – a groundbreaking new art and cultural institution by Rem Koolhaas / OMA; Faena House – a Foster + Partners 18 storey condominium; Faena Versailles – two residential condominium towers designed by Brandon Haw and William Sofield; Casa Claridge’s – a beachside guest house built like a home not a hotel, and Faena Bazaar – a unique retail experience also designed by Rem Koolhaas / OMA.

Faena Hotel Miami Beach comprises rooms and penthouses designed by film director, Baz Luhrmann and his Academy Award-winning wife, Catherine Martin, a 22,000ft2 South American inspired Tierra Santa Spa, fire kitchen restaurant Los Fuegos by Francis Mallman, two bars and Pao by Paul Qui restaurant.

The venue for our Breakfast Talk is the Saxony Theatre – a two level theatre and performance space, where Sleeper Magazine Editor-at-Large Guy Dittrich will be joined by three seminal industry figures to look at the evolution of Miami’s hotel scene, past, present and future (see overleaf for speaker profiles).

Laurent began his 23 year hotel journey in the US, at the Plaza Athénée Hotel in New York, prior to his recruitment to launch the first W Hotel in New York as Director of Food & Beverage. In 2001, he moved to LA and joined the Standard Hotel Group, becoming General Manager for the Standard Hollywood, then the Standard Downtown LA, before opening the Standard Miami.

In most recent years prior to joining Swire Hotels, Laurent assumed the position of General Manager at Soho Beach House Miami, in which capacity he travelled to Latin America representing and expanding the Soho House brand.

He is now General Manager of EAST Miami, overseeing the opening of the hotel at Brickell City Centre, Swire Properties’ US$1 billion mixed-use development in Miami’s downtown financial district. It will be the hotel group’s first property in the US and the third hotel under the EAST brand, following the launch of EAST, Hong Kong in Island East in 2010 and EAST, Beijing last year at INDIGO, Beijing.

Designed by Miami-based architects Arquitectonica, with interiors by Clodagh Design and Studio Collective, EAST, Miami will offer 263 rooms and 89 serviced apartments. The hotel will have two restaurants and a rooftop bar, as well as meeting rooms, pool deck, fitness centre and treatment rooms.

BREAKFAST SPEAKERS:

JASON POMERANCCO-FOUNDER, SIXTY HOTELS

Jason’s hospitality career began with The Pomeranc Group, a family-operated real estate development firm, in 1997. A few years later, Jason and his brothers, Lawrence and Michael Pomeranc, debuted their first property in New York, 60 Thompson (rebranded in 2014 as SIXTY SoHo) - a project which pioneered the luxury boutique hotel sector in SoHo when it opened in 2001.

The opening of this new boutique hotel inspired the creation of Thompson Hotels. For more than 12 years Jason served as Co-founder and Creative Director. Along with his partners he developed, rebranded and renovated over 13 hotels for the brand throughout North America and the UK, opening six hotels within a 24 month period.

In October 2011, Jason and partners co-created Commune Hotels & Resorts, a parent company of Thompson Hotels and Joie de Vivre, which managed 46 hotels in North America and the UK, for which he served as co-chairman. Following a sale of his interests in Commune in August 2013 Jason along with his brothers and longtime collaborator Stephen Brandman, co-founded SIXTY Collective – a new company committed to creating a 360˚ cultural experience in hospitality environments.

In 2014, the Collective launched SIXTY Hotels - a new, innovative brand of six luxury inns based in New York City, Los Angeles, Miami South Beach, and Montreal (set to open in 2016).

Following our breakfast talk at Faena, Sleepover guests will once again split into three groups and be transported by coach on tours of three newly emergent districts shaping the wider city beyond Miami Beach.

With more than nine acres of masterplanning and urban design, the landmark US$1 billion Brickell City Centre is one of the most anticipated large-scale projects in Miami and currently in the final stages of completion. Transforming the downtown city skyline, Brickell City Centre is being brought to life by Swire Properties and includes 500,000ft2 luxury retail and dining anchored by Saks Fifth Avenue; two premier luxury condominium towers, Reach and Rise; two mid-rise office towers, and the EAST, Miami hotel. The mixed-use project also features the CLIMATE RIBBON™, a first-of-its-kind 150,000ft2 elevated trellis that operates as a sophisticated climate-management system.

After a short opening presentation, Sleepover guests will receive an exclusive first-look tour of Brickell City Centre’s completed towers, starting with the EAST hotel, Swire Hotels’ first US venture. There, guests will take in views of the city’s skyline at the hotel’s rooftop bar, Sugar, as well as seeing its soon to open Uruguayan restaurant, Quinto La Huella. The tour will continue to one of the two luxury condominium towers, Reach, as well as Three Brickell City Centre, one of the two Class-A office towers.

DISTRICT TOURS – MONDAY

BRICKELL CITY CENTER

Page 30: Sleepover Miami

Our second tour will see guests enjoying a visit to The Miami Design District – a neighbourhood where low-rise warehouses, converted into boutique stores, art galleries, restaurants and cafés, sit alongside architecturally adventurous showrooms from some of the biggest names in fashion, retail and design.

The Miami Design District is owned by Miami Design District Associates, a partnership between Dacra, founded and owned by entrepreneur Craig Robins, and L Real Estate, a global development and investment fund, specialising in luxury shopping destinations. Together they have actively transformed this once-overlooked corner of Buena Vista into a vibrant destination for shopping, cultural and culinary experiences.

The vision for a rejuvenated Design District – responsive to its historic, urban and tropical context – was developed by award-winning masterplanners Duany Plater-Zyberk, additional participation from architects including Hariri and Hariri, Juan Lezcano, Terence Riley, and Alison Spear.

Guests who are on the Design District tour at lunchtime will also have the opportunity to sample the Mediterranean cuisine and rustic design of Mandolin Aegean Bistro. Mandolin opened a second Miami restaurant at Soho Beach House in 2010, and is now expanding its partnership with Soho House Group with new outposts in Istanbul, London and Berlin.

The Wynwood Walls was conceived by the late Tony Goldman – a locally renowned community revitaliser and placemaker – in 2009. His simple idea was to transform this warehouse district by allowing street artists to adorn the sides of its buildings: “Wynwood’s large stock of warehouse buildings, all with no windows, would be my giant canvases to bring to them the greatest street art ever seen in one place,” he said.

The project started in 2009 with a six-building complex at 25th–26th Street and has since expanded to fulfil Goldman’s vision, with the world’s greatest graffiti and street artists gravitating to the walls. Since its inception, the programme has seen over 50 artists representing 16 countries covering over 80,000ft2 of walls.

Each year The Wynwood Walls endeavours to expand its breadth, introduce artists that have never exhibited before in the US and bring world class art to the community.

Guests on The Wynwood Walls tour at lunchtime will dine at Wynwood Kitchen & Bar, the restaurant at the heart of The Wynwood Walls created by Goldman Properties, incorporating a bar area with a colourful mural by graffiti artists Shepard Fairey, explosive 20ft abstract paintings by acclaimed German artist Christian Awe, and an 11ft sculpture by David Benjamin Sherry.

CLOSING COCKTAIL – MONDAY

SUGAR @ EAST MIAMI

Following Monday afternoon’s tours, all Sleepover guests will reconvene at Sugar, the 40th floor rooftop bar and lounge at EAST Miami, for a closing cocktail reception from 6-8pm where we will be joined by local luminaries from the hospitality and design industries.

Inspired by the EAST Hotel rooftop space in Hong Kong, Sugar will bring its notion of intrigue and voyeurism to Miami with an overall view of downtown and the unique surrounding waterways below. Encompassing heavy Asian influences, Sugar offers a lush Balinese garden vibe with an approachable transition from late afternoon cocktails and sunsets to extended evening libations under the stars, complemented with savory Asian Tapas.

Once our official programme has concluded, guests will have optional transport back to The Hall provided. Alternatively you can make your own way to explore the city at leisure (remember your Google Map link!) Please note many restaurants in Miami are closed Mondays. We have highlighted some that are open with purple markers on the map.

As a final benefit to Sleepover guests, transport will also be provided to celebrate the launch of Espasso’s new gallery at Ironside Miami, at an opening reception for Maison & Objet Americas, giving you a chance to experience this new creative quarter of showrooms, studios and co-working spaces.
