• Measured in “dB SPL”

• Highest Closer to Your Mouth

• Standard Conversation: 60 dB SPL



• Sensitivity Rating Varies by Manufacturer

• Directly Related to Microphone’s Output

• High Sensitivity = Quiet Sounds

• Ratings Closest to Zero (0) Are More Sensitive

• Adequate Level: -50 dB

• Windows Recorder - Free with most version of Microsoft Windows. Access via your Start Menu>Accessories. Will only record WAV files.

• Audacity - Open source (free license) software. Please note that you will also need to install the LAME Encoder to export as MP3. Access both at http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

• AudioEdit Deluxe - Priced at about $25. http://audioedit.mystikmedia.com/

• Adobe Sound Booth - Priced at about $200. Access athttp://www.adobe.com/products/soundbooth/

• Adobe Audition - Priced at about $350. Access athttp://www.adobe.com/products/audition/


Audio Bit Rate

• Amount of Data Processed In Specified Amount of Time

• Measured in kbps (kilobytes per second)

• 32 kbps Is Sufficient for Final File

• 128 kbps Recommend for Files to Be Edited or Compressed Later


Audio Sample Rate

• Sample Rate Represents the Rate Each Audio Input Is Recorded to Disk

• Measured in kHz (thousand cycles per second)

• CD Quality: 44 kHz

• Lower, But Adequate Quality: 22 kHz

• Frequency Range for Accuracy of Sound

• 22 kHz Is Adequate
