Setting: College Archaeology classroom somewhere in Indiana. Jesus Tomb, Easter Sunday also depicted.

Jones: Well, that about concludes the lecture for today. Any questions?

Slide #4

Student: Dr. Jones, Dr. Jones!

Jones: Yes, Mary.

Slide #5

Student: I understand some archeologists think they may have recently found the tomb of Jesus Christ. Is this possible? And if they really found it, and determined it wasn’t empty, wouldn’t it debunk the entire premise of the Christian faith?

Slide #6

Jones: Hmm. An interesting thought. But there are two bits of evidence that are undeniable. Why don’t you turn to the Gospel of John and see if that gives us any insight. Let’s start with John, chapter 20.

Slide #7

Student: (Student turns in Bible). Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.

Jones: A very heavy stone I might add.

Slide #8

Student: So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”

Slide #9

Jones: Are you picturing it? Imagine a young girl like yourself.

Student: Like me? (Thinks about it.) Yeah, I like that.

(Mary comes face-to-face with Pete. John is off-stage with mic.)

Slide #10

Mary: Pete, you gotta’ come with me.

Peter: M&M, what’s up?

Mary: It’s Jesus. He’s gone.

Peter: (Calling out to John.) Hey, “The Disciple Jesus Loved”.

Slide #11

John: You talking to me?

Peter: Yeah, come out here. (John enters.)

John: What’s up?

Peter: M&M here says Jesus is gone.

Slide #12

John: Dead is more like it.

Mary: No, I mean his body is gone!

Peter: We better check this out. (Peter & John put on hats & coats and grab flash lights. Mary puts on Safari hat. Actors freeze.)

Slide #13

Jones: So, once these followers heard the report of the missing body, the primary evidence, they responded by going to check it out. It all starts with hearing the good news. (Cont’d)

Slide #14

Jones: (Cont’d) That’s why evangelism has always been so important to Christians. Now for their response to hearing the good news. Keep reading, Mary.

Slide #15

Student: So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. (John arrives at tomb, frozen, he looks inside.)

Page 16: Slide #1 Raiders of the Empty Tomb Based on John 20:1-18 ©2007 David Skarshaug (). Conditions for use: (1) If you use all or parts of this

Slide #16

Student: Then Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, as well as the burial cloth that had been around Jesus’ head. The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from the linen.

(Peter arrives and runs past John into tomb.)

Slide #18

Student: Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.) Then the disciples went back to their homes,

Slide #19

Jones: There, so you see the pattern. John saw the evidence first, and knew something was strange. Peter examined it further, and knew there was something odd. Finally, John, did what millions of Christians have done since then. He saw and believed.

Page 20: Slide #1 Raiders of the Empty Tomb Based on John 20:1-18 ©2007 David Skarshaug (). Conditions for use: (1) If you use all or parts of this

Slide #20

Student: But that’s the problem, Dr. Jones. We don’t have the advantage of a first-hand account today. We don’t even know for sure where the tomb was.

Page 21: Slide #1 Raiders of the Empty Tomb Based on John 20:1-18 ©2007 David Skarshaug (). Conditions for use: (1) If you use all or parts of this

Slide #21

Jones: Ah, but that’s the interesting twist. Remember I said there are two pieces of evidence. To those early followers, the first evidence was the ABSENCE of Christ’s body in a tomb. Today, it is the PRESENCE of Christ’s body in the church.

Page 22: Slide #1 Raiders of the Empty Tomb Based on John 20:1-18 ©2007 David Skarshaug (). Conditions for use: (1) If you use all or parts of this

Slide #22

Student: And that’s it? We’re asked to be followers of Jesus based merely on the absence of his body?

Jones: There is more: the second piece of evidence. Keep digging, my young archeologist.

Slide #23

Student: But Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.

Slide #24

(Mary looks into tomb and two Angels appear.)

Mary: Who are you. Are you Michael? Are you Gabriel?

Angel 1: No, I am Hans.

Angel 2: And I am Franz.

Slide #25

Angel 1: We came to pump him up.

Angel 2: Yah, and roll away the stone.

Angel 1: So what is your problem?

Slide #26

Mary: They have taken my Lord away, and I don’t know where they have put him.

(Jesus appears from behind Mary.)

Jesus: Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?

Page 27: Slide #1 Raiders of the Empty Tomb Based on John 20:1-18 ©2007 David Skarshaug (). Conditions for use: (1) If you use all or parts of this

Slide #27

Mary: Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.

Jesus: Mary.

Mary: Teacher

Slide #28

Jones: There. That’s part two of our evidence. The first part is the presence of Christ’s Body, the church. The second part is Christ’s presence with each believer.

Student: Is that it?

Page 29: Slide #1 Raiders of the Empty Tomb Based on John 20:1-18 ©2007 David Skarshaug (). Conditions for use: (1) If you use all or parts of this

Slide #29

Jones: The lesson is over, but the fun has just begun.
