George DanzigGeorge Danzig

While a graduate student at UC Berkeley,Danzig showed up late to class one day. ProfessorJerzy Neyman had written two examples offamously unsolved statistics problems on theblackboard. When Dantzig arrived, he assumedthat the two problems were a homeworkassignment and wrote them down. According toDantzig, the problems "seemed to be a little harderthan usual", but a few days later he handed incompleted solutions for both, still believing thatthey were an assignment that was overdue. Sixweeks later, Dantzig received a visit from anexcited professor Neyman, who had prepared oneof Dantzig's solutions for publication in amathematical journal!
