1 A9 - SLUICE GATE 8.1 SCOPE : The scope includes Supply, installation, testing & commissioning of electrically operated single door rising extended spindle type Sluice Gate with wall thimble, flush bottom closing, flange back frame being suitable for seating and unseating water head, guide, frame, slides, etc. with all required hardware and headstock. 8.2 DESIGN REQUIREMENTS AND CONSTRUCTION FEATURES The construction of sluice gates shall be in accordance with the specification and generally as per AWWA C501 or IS : 13349/1992 CL-1. The sluice gates shall be capable of performing the duties set out in this specification without undue wear for deterioration. They shall be constructed so that maintenance is kept to a minimum. All parts of sluice gate, including lifting mechanism components shall be designed for the heads specified with a minimum safety factor of five. All sluice gates shall be of the rising spindle type. 8.3 FRAME The frame shall be of ample section and cast in one piece. All surfaces forming joints and bearings shall be machined. The frame shall be of the flange back type and shall be machined face of the wall thimble. 8.4 GUIDE Guide shall be bolted to the frame or cat integrally with it and shall be machined on all bearing and contract faces. The length of guide shall be such contact faces. The length of guide shall be such that it should support the gate up to the horizontal line of stem nut pocket. Arrangement shall be made to prevent lateral movement of bolted on guides. They shall be capable of taking the entire thrust produced by water pressure and wedging action. Wedges or wedge facings shall be attached securely to the guides at points where, in the closed position, they will make full contact with the wedging surfaces on the slides. 8.5 SEATING FACES Seating faces shall be made of full width, solid section, dove-tail strips of stainless steel. They shall be secured firmly by means of counter sunk fixings in finished dove-tail grooves in the frame and slide faces in such a way as to ensure that they will remain permanently in place, free from distortion and loosening during the life of the sluice gates. The faces shall be of ample section and finished smooth. The maximum clearance between the seating surfaces, with the slide in the closed position shall not exceed 0.10 mm.

8.1 SCOPE :

8.6 WEDGING DEVICES

Sluice gates shall be equipped with adjustable side, top and bottom wedging devices as required to provide contact between the slide and frame facing when the gate is in closed position. All faces shall be machined accurately to give maximum contact and wedding action. Wedges shall be fully adjustable with suitable adjusting screws and locknuts and so designed that they will remain in the fixed position after adjustment.

8.7 GATE SLIDES

The slide shall be with strengthening ribs where required and a reinforced section to receive the seating faces. The slide shall have tongues on each side extending its full length, and the tongues shall be machined accurately on contact surfaces. Surfaces of the slide that come in contact with the seat facing and sedges shall be machined accurately. The maximum allowable clearances between the slide and the slide guide shall be 1.6 mm. An integrally cast stem nut pocket with reinforced ribs shall be provided above the horizontal centerline of the slide. The stem nut pocket shall be provided with drain.

8.7.1 STEM NUT AND LIFT NUT

Gate shall be provided with a lower fixed stem nut for connecting the stem to the slide and a revolving lift nut located in the lifting mechanism in the head stock. They shall be of ample design to endure the thrust crank operated type and shall have a lift nut threaded to fit the operating stem. Crank shall be removable. Ball or roller thrust bearings shall be provided above and below the flange on the lift nut to take the load developed in opening and closing the gate with a torque of 14 kg. m on the crank. Fittings shall be provided to lubricate gears and bearing. The deign of the lift mechanism of the hand operated gates shall be such that the slide can be operated with a torque of not more than 7 kg m on the operator after the slide is unseated from wedges based on the operating head. The maximum crank radius shall be 380 mm. All gears and bearings shall be enclosed in a cast iron housing with labyrinth seals. The lifting mechanism shall be with a cast iron pedestal, machined and drilled to receive the gear housing and suitable for bolting to the operating floor. The gates shall close with clock wise rotation of the crank. The direction of rotation to close the gate shall be indicated on the lift mechanism. A suitable means shall be provided for lubricating the stem threads directly adjacent to the lift nut. An inspection cover shall be provided to access the lift nut and gearing. Stem shall be provided with a GI pipe cover. The cover shall be fixed to the head stock.

8.8 FASTENERS

All anchor bolts assembly bolts, screws, nuts, etc shall be of ample section to safely withstand the forces created by operation of the gate.

8.9 WALL THIMBLES

Wall thimbles shall be made of cast iron and shall be supplied along with the gate. The wall thimbles shall provide a rigid mounting, designed to prevent

warping of the gate frame during installation. The cross section of the thimble shall have the shape of the letter ‘F’. The front, or mounting flange, shall be machined and shall be drilled and tapped to the same template used for its particular gate frame. The frame shall be attached to the thimble with bolts or studs. The depth of the wall thimbles shall not be less than 300 mm. To permit entrapped air to escape as the thimble is being encased in concrete, holes not lesser than 35 mm dia. at not more than 600 mm span, shall be cast or drilled in each entrapment zone formed by the reinforcing ribs or the flange and fluid stop.

8.10 LIFTING LUGS

Lifting lugs shall be provided for all gates.

8.11 FLUSH BOTTOM SEAL

(a) For gates with flush bottom seals the bottom wedges shall be omitted.

(b) The resilient rubber seal shall be mounted on the slide and shall be held securely in place with a retainer bar bolted to the side.

(c) A cast iron seating face of suitable shape and dimensions shall be substituted along the bottom of the frame to provide positive seating. The top of this seating face shall be flush with the gate invert.

8.12 ACTUATOR :

8.12.1 The sluice gate shall be operated by an electro mechanical actuator, comprising of motorized gear train and screw assembly which drives the sluice gate stem. The actuator shall be supplied with the following accessories.

A.C. electric motor.

Reduction gear unit.

Torque switch mechanism complete with set of torque switches.

Limit switch mechanism complete with set of limit switches.

Handwheel for manual operation.

Hand-auto changeover lever with suitable locking arrangement.

Local & panel mounted control switch / push buttons

415 V / 240 V AC control transformer

Position Indicator

Integral & local forward /reverse starter

8.12.2 The actuator shall be suitable for operation in the climate conditions and power supply conditions given in the specification. The actuator shall

be capable of producing not less than 1½ time the maximum required torque and shall be suitable for at least 15 minutes continuous operation..

8.12.3 A.C. ELECTRIC MOTOR :

Each motor shall be fully tropicalised and suitable for operation in the prevailing climate conditions. They shall also be suitable for operating satisfactorily under variations of electric supply specified.

8.12.4 MOTORS :

The electric motors shall be of 3 phase, squirrel cage type as per IS 325 with insulation to IS 1271 class “B”. The winding shall be impregnated to render them non-hydroscopic and oil resistant. All internal metal parts shall be painted. The motor shall be rated for 30 min.

8.12.5 MOTOR PROTECTION :

The motor shall be protected by bimetallic over load relay. The relay shall be manually re-set type.

8.12.6 MOTOR CONTROLS :

1 The reversing contactor starter and local controls shall be integral with the sluice gate actuator. The starters shall comprise mechanically and electrical interlocked reversing contactor of appropriate rating fed from a 220 V control transformer. The common connection of the contactor coils at the transformer shall be grounded. HRC type primary and secondary fuses shall be provided.

2 Local control shall comprise push buttons for open close and stop operations, and a local / remote selector switch lockable in the three positions as below :

Vendor should also make a provision for transmitting the mode selected to control panel and control panel will have corresponding indication lamps.

8.12.7 WIRING AND TERMINALS:

Internal wiring shall be of grade PVC insulated stranded cable of 650 V and of minimum 1.5 mm² copper for control circuits and of minimum 4 mm² for the power circuit. Each wire shall be number identified at each end. The terminals shall be of stud tupe and they shall also be identified by numbers. Cable entries shall be suitable for PVC SWAPVC cables.

8.12.8 ENCLOSURE :

The actuator enclosure shall be IP 68.

8.12.9 REDUCTION GEAR UNIT :

1 Reduction gear unit shall be of the totally enclosed oil bath lubricated type. The gear box shall be provided with the first charge of oil lubricants and

appropriate filling and drain connections. Gearing shall be adequate to open and close the sluice gates under full indicated maximum operating pressure differential at a speed sufficient to cover the full extent of travel.

2 The sluice gate operating equipment shall have a hammer-blow device to loosen stuck sluice gate or retrieve jammed sluice gate position.

3 The gearbox shall have suitable stops to prevent movement of shaft beyond fully open / close position. The gearbox shall also be designed for 15% more torque than maximum sluice gate torque.

8.12.10 TORQUE SWITCH MECHANISM :

1 The torque switch mechanism shall function as follows to stop the motor on closing or opening of the sluice gate, upon actuation by the torque when the sluice gate disc is restricted in its attempt to open or close.

2 The torque switch in the closing direction shall interrupt the control circuit if mechanical overload occurs during the closing cycle or when the sluice gate is fully closed. The torque switch in the opening direction shall interrupt the control circuit if mechanical overload occurs during opening cycle or when the value is fully open.

3 The mechanism shall facilitate adjustment of the torque at which the switches are required to operate.

8.12.11 LIMIT SWITCH MECHANISM:

1 Non-adjustable limit switches shall stop the motor and give indication when the wedge has attained the fully open or closed position.

2. The adjustable limit switches shall function to actuate relays / switches, provided for system interlock, at the desired sluice gate position in both the opening and closing directions.

8.12.12 HANDWHEEL :

A hand wheel shall be provided for emergency operation. The hand wheel drive shall be mechanically independent of the motor drive and any gearing should be such as to permit emergency manual operation in a reasonable time.
