WHYATTENDTHESMALLUASSYMPOSIUMSmallUASareproliferatingataremarkablepace,drivenbytheinsatiabledemand for ISR . Many gatherings focus on dramatic efforts such asN-UCAS with 2 demonstration aircraft, or the USAF intent to purchaseat least 50 more Predators. In contrast, the Navy recently ordered 13Shadow,135Waspand467Ravensystems,andwillsoonawardacontractforSTUAS.TheArmyoperatesthousandsofGroupIUAS-90%ofallUASinDoDarelessthan10pounds.

SmallUASoperationisnotexclusivetotheDoD:severalfederalagenciesoperate UAS, such as Bureau of Land Management, Department ofHomeland Security, Customs and Border Patrol, NOAA, US ForestryServiceandUSGS.

ThisacquisitionofmoreSmallUASwillrequirethetrainingofasimilaramountofoperators(oneRavensystemineveryinfantrycompany,oneShadowsystemforeveryBattalionoftheMarineCorps),andwillplaceanincredibledemandondatalinkbandwidthwhiledramaticallyincreasingthelikelihoodofmid-aircollisionwithmannedaircraft.

ThissymposiumisfocusedontheSmallUAScommunity(GroupI,GroupII,andGroupIII)withanunderstandingoftheimpactofexisting,advancingandasymmetricthreatsinJointWarfightingandHomelandSecurity.

ThesymposiumwillfeatureKeynoteAddressesbyBrigadier General Tim Crosby, USA—ProgramExecutiveOfficer,Aviation,USArmyandCaptain J.R. Brown, USN—Program Manager, PMA-263. Other Presentationswill be made by the Military users reporting on Current WarfightingOperations. We will provide zip lock bags and a table for this purpose. Attendees are advised that cell phone detectors will be in use. Only the final program may be taken into the meeting room.
