Introduction to Research

The purpose of research

What is scholarly research? We undertake research when we wish to

explore an idea probe an issue solve a problem or make an argument that compels us to turn to outside

help We then seek out, investigate, and use materials

beyond our personal resources The findings and conclusions of such an inquiry

appear in the research paper Research consists of primary and secondary sources

Primary sources Primary research is the

study of a subject through firsthand observation and investigation, such as analyzing a literary or historical text, a film, or a performance; conducting a survey or an interview; or carrying out a laboratory experiment

Primary sources include statistical data, historical documents, and works of literature or art

Secondary sources Secondary research is

the examination of studies that other researchers have made of a subject

Examples of secondary sources are books and articles about political issues, historical events, scientific debates, or literary works

The student’s voice Research increases your knowledge and

understanding of a subject Sometimes research confirms; sometimes it

challenges and modifies But almost always it will help to shape your thinking A research paper should not merely review

publications and extract a series of quotations from them…

Main purpose of research As you use and scrupulously acknowledge

sources, however, always remember that the main purpose of doing research is not to summarize the work of others but to assimilate and to build on it and to arrive at and to express your own understanding of the subject

What is plagiarism? Latin word plagiarius (“kidnapper”) Plagiarism refers to a form of cheating that has been

defined as “the false assumption of authorship” To use another person’s ideas or expressions in your

writing without acknowledging the source Plagiarism constitutes intellectual theft It is a moral and ethical offense that carries severe

penalties ranging from failure in a course to… expulsion from school

PHS penalty for plagiarism “Students found engaging in cheating or plagiarism

receive a grade of zero on that particular examination or assignment and their parents, administrator, and guidance counselor will be contacted immediately by the teacher. It is important to note that this zero could lead to the failure of a course and even failure to graduate… Incidents of cheating/plagiarism may also result in disciplinary action” (PHS Student Handbook 22).

Plagiarism! This is plagiarism not necessarily because the

student has copy and pasted the author’s words.

The worse offense is not giving credit to the source.

This is the most obvious example of plagiarism, but not the only type.

What else is wrong? Don’t ever let someone else’s word make up

the entirety of one of your sentences. To be culturally literate is to possess the basic information

needed to thrive in the modern world. The breadth of that information is great, extending over the major domains of human activity from sports to science.

John Smith reminds us that “[t]o be culturally literate is to possess the basic information needed to thrive in the modern world” (26). Further, “[t]he breadth of that information is great, extending over the major domains of human activity from sports to science” (Smith 26).

Student Rewrite #2 In order to be literate in one’s culture, a person needs a lot of information about his society. That information must span the whole spectrum of what humans have thought, written, and done.

Plagiarism! Again, this is not necessarily plagiarism

because the student has merely taken the author’s idea and put it into different words.

It’s plagiarism because the student has once again not given credit to the source!

You may use direct quotes or paraphrase, but you must always credit!

Student Rewrite #3 - In order to be “culturally literate,” a citizen must have a vast amount of information covering all “major domains of human activity” ranging “from sports to science.”

Plagiarism! Adding quotation marks is good, but not

enough! This is still plagiarism because even though

the student has placed some of the author’s works in quotation marks, the source remains unidentified to the audience.

Plagiarism? Student Rewrite #4 In his book Cultural

Literacy, Smith insists that, “to be culturally literate is to possess the basic information needed to thrive in the modern world,” and that it provides a wide range of information “extending over the major domains of human activity from sports to science” (25).
