 ATA Commands and Behaviors

On the drive side, GLACIER supports ATAPI 6.0 command set for SATA drives.

2. 7 4 RAID Function

2. 7 4 1 Metadata On the Disk (MDD)

The MDD is used to store the RAID configuration and status, which will also enable the roaming of disk ground

among different PROMISE RAID systems.

RAID module reserves 128MB space on each disk for metadata of RAID configuration, and also keep 2 copies of

metadata in this 128MB space which will prevent the RAID configuration losing by media error of disk.

2. 7 4 2 Capacity Coercion

A capacity coercion formula should be applied to the drive to enable the usage of drives replacement, hot spare

with minor capacity difference. The truncated capacity is in proportional to drive capacity.

2. 7 4 3 RAID Support

2. 7 4 3 1 Basic RAID Level

Glacier supports RAID 0 (Striping), RAID 1 (Mirroring), RAID10 (Striping with mirroring) and RAID 5 (Rotational

parity), and RAID6 (Double parity).

Page 17: SmartStor GLACIER PFD v0 - Promise Technology partner media/OEM_Imation/Smar… · Promise Technology, Inc. Confidential Page 6 2. Feature Set 2. 1 Green The GLACIER storage system

Promise Technology, Inc. Confidential Page 17

Multiple RAID level (hybrid RAID) support is required for RAID30 (Stripe multiple RAID3 set), RAID 50 (Stripe

multiple RAID5 set (axle)).

2. 7 4 3 3 Multiple Logic Drive per Array

Support multiple logic drives per a RAID configuration group (or called as disk group).

2. 7 4 3 4 Drive Group Roaming

A number of drives can be grouped together as a configured storage array. Roaming is supported with the unit of

disk group.

2. 7 4 3 5 Drive Location Identifier

The controller provides a means (data structure or API) to supply management SW with drive location in terms of

enclosure and drive slot within an enclosure.

2. 7 4 3 6 Out of Order LUN Deletion and Addition

Allow out of order logical drive deletion. Allow logical drive creation in a fragmented RAID configuration. Logical

drive span over fragmented free space is not allowed. Deleting or creating new logical drives should not affect

other original logical drives.

2. 7 4 3 7 Max. LUN Support

Max. 256 logical drives are supported per controller (or controller pair).

2. 7 4 3 8 Max. Array Members

The controller allows up to 256 drives per RAID configuration for striping or mirroring (Raid 0, 1 and JBOD).

For RAID 5, the max group stripe is 32. With multi-level RAID, i.e. RAID 50, 51, the max drives per RAID

configuration is 256 for RAID 50 with max axels of 32, and for RAID 51 with max. two axels.

Maximum arrays allowed per controller are limited to 256.

2. 7 4 3 9 Max. Logical drive Capacity

Maximum logical drive capacity allowed is up to 2^30 TB.

2. 7 4 3 10 Stripe Size

Strip size options: 64K, 128K, 256K, 512K and 1MB.

2. 7 4 3 11 Logical Drive Basis

RAID level, stripe size, and cache policy is per RAID logical drive basis..

2. 7 4 3 12 Hot Spare (Standby) Drives

Support dedicated, global hot spare.

2. 7 4 4 RAID Background Activities

2. 7 4 4 1 Synchronization

Synchronization (SYNC) sometimes is referred to as instant RAID availability, but it may also slow down the host

IO while synchronization is running.

2. 7 4 4 2 Logical drive Initialization

Logical drive initialization (INIT) fills certain data patterns to logical drives. Logical drive will not server host data

IO till logical drive initialization is finished.

2. 7 4 4 3 Rebuild

Auto and manual Rebuild is supported support.

2. 7 4 4 4 Redundancy Check

Redundancy Check (RC) on all fault tolerance RAID logical drives.

2. 7 4 4 5 Media Patrol

Media Patrol (MP) on all configured drives and space include MDD area.

2. 7 4 4 6 Background Check Points (Watermark)

All background activities could be resumed from the point of interruption. The background check-points are

recorded in metadata in disk, which allow the roaming of disk array during background activities.

2. 7 4 4 7 Background Rate Control and Progress Indicator

The controller should have individual rate control for all background activities and migration activities.

2. 7 4 4 8 Background Activity Concurrency

The controller should allow concurrent background activities as long as the activities are operated on a different

drive array.

2. 7 4 5 RAID Migration

RAID migration could involve online capacity Expansion (OCE), RAID Level Migration (RLM) at once or in any

combinations.

2. 7 4 5 1 Online Capacity Expansion

OCE can be done with or without adding new drives. RAID capacity should be presented to the OS after expansion

is completed without requiring a reset or system reboot.

2. 7 4 5 2 Raid Level Migration

Any to any RAID level migration, assuming user data capacity does not shrink.

2. 7 4 5 3 Error Recovery and Error Handling

Page 19: SmartStor GLACIER PFD v0 - Promise Technology partner media/OEM_Imation/Smar… · Promise Technology, Inc. Confidential Page 6 2. Feature Set 2. 1 Green The GLACIER storage system

Robust error recovery should be performed on the drive. But consideration should be paid to performance issues

and quickly identify dead drives.

2. 7 4 5 4 Invalid Blocks Protection

Read Check Table, Write check table and Inconsistent data table mechanisms are commonly used to protect

invalid data transfer.

2. 7 4 5 5 Stripe Lock Mechanism

Stripe lock mechanism is to protect data corruption while IO, background activity and dual controller access are

performed simultaneously.

2. 7 4 5 6 Configuration Lock Mechanism

The controller or its management software needs to implement a lock mechanism that prevents multiple clients,

through in-band, out of band, CLI, GUI or controller internals, from making configuration changes to the same

array of drives at the same time.

2. 7 4 5 7 Predicative Data Migration (PDM)

PROMISE RAID module provides more robust error handling by monitoring the disk error record. When a disk is

detected with one of the following status (1) SMART error, (2) its bad sectors are over the threshold or (3)

frequently timeout occurred within short time, the disk will be marked as PFA status (Predictive Failure Analysis).

The disk with PFA will be treated as sick drive. The logical drive will be kept at the normal status, since the

problem disk still not totaling dead. RAID module will move the data from a sick disk to a healthy spare before

the sick disk is totally dead, instead of marking disk as dead status.

2. 7 5 Cache Support

2. 7 5 1 1 Write/Read cache Policy

Support both write back/write through, read/read ahead cache per logical drive basis.

2. 7 6 Statistic Data Monitoring
